Star
Star is performing a public purification ceremony, an occasion of great joy and sensuality, a ritual bath. A shapely woman sings and pours liquids from jugs into the bathing pond under the stars. This is a card of love, enthusiastic love, declaring love feelings, feeling singing-in-the-shower good, expressing wholeheartedly, and telling and confessing and gushing and ‘spilling your guts.’
Star is also good news and publicity (press releases, anyone?), sales pitches, reports, explanations, explaining, telling, talk (speak/say/tell category), and girl talk, since Star is a girl. Still in the speak/say/tell Tarot tribe, Star means venting, gushing, and even flattering. Star also expresses gratitude – hence, it says ‘Thank you.’
Yes, this is one of the cards that translates: female, girl, woman – and even ‘her.’
Another category Star belongs to is health – robust health, and feeling very good, very healthy – particularly as a result of healing. And Ace of Cups of course means healing.
Ace of Cups
What is this? Ace of Cups is a diagram of a concept. The concept is that God’s spirit infuses the senses (five senses) of a human, flows through that person to influence mass consciousness of other humans. This is a Roman Catholic based Tarot card. The dove represents Holy Spirit, and in its beak it has the wafer of the Communion ritual in which humans ritually ingest the spirit of the divine. The five flows represent the five senses … and also the Middle Ages ‘five humors’ or body fluids. The body of water they streams flow into represents mass consciousness of humans. That ‘W’ also means something in Roman Catholic ideology, too. This illustration arises from the fountain Ste. Teresa d’Avila writes about in her Interior Castles, a tome universities consider the premier work of Western mysticism.
So Ace of Cups represents the love of God, and that God is love. Naturally, that makes it mean love, unconditional love, pure love. So Ace of Cups means ‘good.’ Any good. It means flow, liquid, and water – and therefore a leak or gush of fluid in any way.
Ace of Cups means a flow, to go with the flow or cooperate, to accept and be accepted, to be healthy and calm.
Ace of Cups also means female gender, and birth, so it can indicate pregnancy.
Page of Swords
I remember, when I was learning Tarot, throwing out yet another Tarot book that said Page of Swords means ‘a melancholy youth.’ You see here a hyped-up, anxious, mad, paranoid, excitable dude. The coast is clear for miles around his grassy knoll, yet he whirls around, sword held at the ready, hair flying. Page of Swords is obviously not in control of his destiny or himself.
Meanings of Page of Swords divide around his being either anxious, hyper, annoyed, nervous, afraid, edgy, threatened or challenged, angry, panicky … or excited, thrilled, turned on, or wild about something – blood moving, turned on.
Page of Swords is the one and only card that by itself means jealousy. Keep an eye peeled for that.

Rushes there and back, hot pursuit, sometimes fleeing the scene, switches back and forth, changes. Unexpected change. Comes back. Comes back only to leave again. His illustration shows a fully armed knight with the heavy sword held high above his head, his horse flying at breakneck speed. Even the sky is fast moving here. A sudden strike or suddenly … anything.

Both Two of Pentacles and Knight of Swords mean to go back and forth. Knight of Swords suggests with speed and/or energy, suggests on the road, suggest a return to a former place. Nine of Swords is up nights – fear – worry – concern – a terrible thing – a bad feeling – stew over – scary things – unnerves – cry over it – be upset. See the picture of the dude or dudess up nights crying? Speaks for itself.
Queen of Pentacles
Queen of Pentacles takes care. The Matriarch. She is the female extension of Emperor, the Patriarch. (Empress is very busy doing other things.) She supports – usually her man and his business. She is capable. She has the ability. She has the money. She is a powerful woman wherever she is placed – even in a ghetto. In her illustration, she has the money – fertility symbols surround her – the plants are growing.
Four of Cups
Four of Cups refuses and it does not go through. No way. Huh-hunh. I am not going to, I don’t have to, I don’t believe it. Body posture totally closed, looking down with arms crossed as yet another offer is proferred.
Seven of Pentacles
Seven of Pentacles is about “if.” It is one of the cards that invites the reader to put the information as a question. Seven of Pentacles second guesses and wonders and doubts and is not so sure as he leans on his shovel wondering whether he will have cucumbers in the Fall.

Now Without The Pictures

Nine of Swords and Seven of Pentacles are the ‘Wonder and Worry Team.’ Just look at their drawings: Someone is up nights crying, and someone is leaning on his shovel wondering about how his crop will turn out.
Queen of Pentacles is the giving woman, the woman who takes care – usually of her husband and his affairs or estate. Four of Cups is ‘It doesn’t go through.’ It means to refuse. So maybe she refuses to take care. Something may not be happening with Four of Cups and Seven of Pentacles.

Without a questionalso the pronouns (you, him, her, me, us, them, they, etc.) in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel veryfree to substitute. Notice how, as much as possible, we drop pronouns, which makes for some awkward phrasing.
The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information! In a ‘real’ reading, the parties are identified (including the gender of the questioner!), and so is the time frame if there is one. In this group reading, we cannot do that, so we have variety.

Hanged Man – Hanged Man is about things extrasensory, and about consciousness. Heroes or gods in several myths hung themselves on trees for three days and sacrificed a body part or body function for ‘wisdom’ or psychic abilities. Star – Star is happy and feeling good all over, singing as she bathes in the pond – it’s a performance under the stars. Occasionally Star literally means stars (in both senses since this is a performance too!). Star also owns ‘feeling good all over’ when it comes to (robust) health. Naturally, Star is also joy, glad, happy, thrilled, as well as hope and enthusiasm.

Star is also one of the love cards, where it means to be crazy about someone, to enjoy a person, or to enjoy an activity or thing.

Knight of Wands – Hot pursuit, and getting out of Dodge, that’s our Knight-of-Wands boy. His horse rears and he looks scared, so running is more like it – but he and Knight of Swords strangely mean both, and I have to live with that: Tarot says so in real life.

The thing you can count on Knight of Wands (and his Knight of Swords twin) to mean is speed, hurry, being on the road, fast – run with it, racing.

This is the Tarot card for being transferred, and for over-the-road delivery or transport. This is also the main card for ‘energetic.’ Today he says ‘gung-ho’ and ‘high energy.’
Wheel of Fortune – Like Ace of Cups, Wheel of Fortune’s illustration is a diagram of a concept. The concept is that otherworldly forces and entities affect what happens in what we call our real world. It illustrates this point very well once you know. It hearkens back to the Rota concept in pagan religions’ myths. Rota is of course The Wheel, the Wheel of Fortune. Apollo is involved in some of the material. Anyhow, the otherworldly entities are in person around the Wheel of Fortune. The sphinx and the red lizard are bad guys. The books probably represent karma – I can’t say.

At the inside rim are both ‘Rota’ and the four letters that translate Yahweh or Jehovah in English, meaning God of course.

So we are talking about destiny and chance. Very very frequent translates for Wheel of Fortune are forms of the word ‘happen.’ Other very very frequent translates are: wonderful, miracle, lucky, and anything about scoring, jackpot, getting rich fast, or a payoff. All by itself, it can be ‘fast money,’ but today it has help with that phrase in Knight of Wands meaning ‘fast.’

Four of Cups – If ever a picture said ‘No,’ this is it. He turned down three other cups, and is refusing the next with his head down and turned away, his arms crossed, and is even seated with his legs crossed. So Four of Cups is an emphatic negator card. Occasionally, it will mean a negative word – like today’s ‘disown’ – but generally Four of Cups is putting a damper on some other Tarot card’s meaning by simply adding a negative modifier in Tarot Verbatim™.

Four of Cups often says ‘(I) don’t want.’ Today, it says ‘opt out.’ Once in a while, it is about resisting temptation.
Ten of Pentacles – Ten of Pentacles is one of the cards Tarot Verbatim™ has a different concept for than other systems do. (Funny how that’s three in a row here!) What you are looking at is clearly a family disagreement or even feud. Wife has the squalling kid pulling on her skirt as she pleads with Husband and he stares off in another direction. She obviously gets no respect, has no say. But Grandpa does. Grandpa sits on his throne, being adored by the dogs, as he lets son do the arguing. I suspect the old man wants another grandchild.

By far the most frequent translate for Ten of Pentacles is about ‘problem’ and ‘trouble.’ People who have a problem. People who are a problem. People’s problems and struggles. Disagreements, and things are a mess – family politics or any other sort of politics. Relatives.

Ten of Pentacles is one of the cards that means a group of people, and it’s the negative one, the one about not getting along. (But if the other two family/marriage cards appear in your spread along with Ten of Pentacles, then Ten of Pentacles is promoted to be another one of them.) Ten of Pentacles is a dysfunctional relationship – any kind at any level with any number of sides or people.

Ten of Pentacles embraces both ghetto and wealthy neighborhoods and people. A powerful family or riffraff. It can represent the neighborhood gangs, the Mafia, or the controlling political powers that be, for instance.

Justice – Justice is another example of an illustration that makes most of the meanings of a card clear. And Justice represents any sort of legal setting or person, the most obvious and frequent being lawyers, police, judges and court personnel. It refers to types of legal proceedings, of course, which brings it words like ‘sue’ and ‘prosecuted.’

So the first thing I notice is that we have Justice, things the way they are supposed to be; and we have Ten of Pentacles, people who are problems and/or people who have problems – things are definitely not the way they are supposed to be, are messed up. And Four of Cups stands by to slap a negative on either side of this fence. So this spread says things are messed up, are not the way they are supposed to be, as well as saying things are not messed up, they are the way they are supposed to be. This spread says both ‘I’m not crazy, I’m sane’ and ‘I’m not sane, I’m crazy,’ in other words. Usually the story you ask the question about indicates which of the two choices is valid.

Judgment – All the elements of this Judgment Day picture make categories of meaning for Judgment. Here’s how that goes:
Being awakened from the dead is a change. So Judgment means change (usually for the better).
Being awakened from the dead is a whole new scene, new life, new phase, new thing. So Judgment means ‘new’ anything.
Being awakened by the noise of the angel’s horn suggests an alarm clock, and brings Judgment meanings like loud sounds, warnings, and even music because the angel is playing the horn. Think car horns. Think New Year’s: horns blowing and new phase!
Being awakened from the dead is obviously recovery, regaining health. So Judgment means recovery.
Being awakened from the dead is the next life. So Judgment means ‘the next’ anything, which draws in doing something again (the next time). So Judgment means ‘next’ and means ‘again.’ (Lots of cards mean ‘again.’) ‘Next’ and ‘new life’ get together and make Judgment mean many many words beginning in the prefix ‘re-‘ like remember, remind, etc. You find it meaning ‘do over again’ sometimes.
Being awakened to a new life is a new perspective, so Judgment means to realize, enlightenment, an idea occurring. Judgment also means to be a new person, to go up a level in one’s perspective or consciousness. So it also means ‘promotion’ of other kinds, like at your job.
Being awakened to a new life is overcoming death, so Judgment means overcoming. Of course it means life after death.
Being awakened to a new life is a surprise, so Judgment means ‘surprise’ and means ‘to pop up unexpectedly.’ Judgment can be a surprise party.
Hierophant – Hierophant’s meanings include some philosophy about ‘face’ and the way things actually are. We use the ‘mindset’ part of those meanings, and that’s all. ‘Hierophant’ means ‘pope,’ and that’s the pope in the picture. He’s doing a ritual that means one thing to the public and other things to those in the know about theology. That’s how ‘face’ belong to Hierophant.
Hierophant is the way things are supposed to be – nice and safe, ordinary, civilized harmless, benign, normal, okay, and routine. Another such word for Hierophant is ‘usual’ and ‘usually.’ (The way it’s usually done – protocol, ‘by the book.’)
Hierophant is a very moral card (naturally). It means right and correct and proper, which draws ‘rightful,’ which further draws ‘entitled.’ (Hierophant strongly means ‘entitled,’ and so does Justice.) Hierophant means anything religious that isn’t nefarious (bad). ‘Should’ and ‘ought’ are favorite Hierophant words. It means ‘church’ and similar words like ‘temple.’
Hierophant also means ‘official,’ because its message is the official reality (the ‘face’) is one thing, and real-reality may be another. This ‘official’ category of meanings of Hierophant makes it mean certificates, titles, paper (like ‘married on paper’). So Hierophant is associated with the phrase ‘in the real world,’ as opposed to the more theoretical world. Which in turn makes Hierophant mean ‘physical.’ And it means ‘physical’ a lot, in some unexpected ways like ‘physical body’ when put with Page of Wands.
Strength – This illustration is a representation of the way things are from a spiritual perspective, like Wheel of Fortune is. The idea represented is that when you have overcome internally, spiritually, you prevent what would have been a conflict because of your expertise in the ‘out there’ realm. This isn’t so mysterious: It describes the same process you see when a mugger or other would be attacker sizes up the potential victim and decides it’s not a good idea to tangle with that one. Strength shuts up opposition diplomatically and quashes rebellion by nipping it in the bud. The force of a person’s personality accomplishes that: That’s the point here.
Did you ever notice that when you think of the perfect squelch to a situation you encounter regularly, it never happens again and you don’t get to use it? There’s some invisible law behind that process, and that’s what we’re talking about here. This prevention of conflict, this finessing a potential confrontation, belongs to Strength.
Strength’s eternity-sign halo, and the white robe with fresh flowers, symbolize spiritual stature. The predator who came to challenge, interfere, or attack is now purring instead of roaring, and Strength has her hands on his jaws, shutting him up and petting him. Strength is about overcoming without conflict, and it applies to overcoming yourself as well as your environment: self control and being on top of your game.
Strength owns phrases with ‘handle’ in them: the way you handled that; the way to handle it; you can handle anything. Strength frequently translates ‘solve’ and ‘solution’ too (and ‘fix,’ a synonym). It emphasizes ‘influence’ as well.
Another Strength word is (like Ace of Wands, Ace of Swords, Magician and others) ‘make.’ Make myself, make him, etc. Phrases like ‘aren’t letting that happen.’ Strength’s ‘make’ doesn’t mean force, usually; it means to cause, to influence, or even to induce. But once in a while, Strength is enforcing.
Strength also attracts phrases with ‘hands’ in them because she has her hands on the mouth of the beast. Hands-on, get a grip on, pet, touch, stroke, etc.
