LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES
Eight of Cups ……… Usually Eight of Cups is about circumstances causing an immediate change of plan, direction or activity. Sometimes it is about dropping out, dropping an association of activity. Sometimes it is an unexpected happening. Think ‘getting off-road’ and you have most of its categories covered. The story is a pilgrim having to go around a mountain and river as a detour on his pilgrimage.

Knight of Wands …………. is mainly rush. He is in a hurry. He can be ‘going places’ on the fast track; he can be in hot pursuit. He can also be running away. He tends to be a high-energy hotshot kind of (usually youngish) fellow – a racehorse – when he represents a person.

Page of Wands ………. He is our friend. He looks us up, invites us places, agrees with us and gets us to agree with him, offers suggestions and accepts them, makes us offers and accepts ours. Eight of Cups Empress – Chariot – Knight of Cups LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING Here’s the good looking (sexy) woman who is well off, Empress, and the Nice Young Man, Knight of Cups, who is also the boyfriend. They are well-matched: both are gracious social young people. Chariot is about willpower (drive), doing a project, doing anything deliberately, on purpose … and being successful, getting ahead. Chariot is a vehicle, so ‘cars’ get involved. Actually, Chariot is any vehicle at all. Lastly is Eight of Cups which means an abrupt change, abrupt appearance (or disappearance), something done immediately, as well as an interruption or disruption to a course … a course of action or a course of direction. It’s a detour, so it also has a whiff of: not doing it now, but intend to get back on course. So we have stories of romance and of getting ahead. It’s more about intention than action. As I have said before, the esoteric notion to this Rider Waite Tarot card is he is using a wand, not reins; and he has hitched the sphinx that will only go right on the left, and hitched the one that will only go left on the right of his chariot, so that they are forced to go where he wills: ahead. His strategy allows him to outsmart the limitations of his situation or environment. |

Knight of Cups goes with the flow, makes the first offer of friendship, introduces himself, offers to help, is your boyfriend, is sweetnatured and polite. Is often cute. In the same way Knight of Pentacles’ horse matches the way he is drawn, so does Knight of Cups’ horse: the cute curved lines and the muted colors are patient and soothing. He is often a young man, and is definitely warm and fuzzy. |

Meanings and Illustrations: Observation of the Spread
A contrast exists between Eight of Pentacles and Eight of Cups – Eight of Pentacles meaning steadily doing something (which also means work) and Eight of Cups meaning something being interrupted, abrogated or abruptly ceased.
The remaining Rider Waite Tarot cards are the quiet lady (High Priestess) and the polite agreeable romantic fellow (Knight of Cups). Two people who are not assertive, who are very civilized.
A contrast exists between Eight of Cups (to rebuff; to walk away) and Knight of Cups (making an offer; being polite): an offer is rebuffed, and being polite and having someone walk away.
A contrast exists, sort of, between the polite romantic young man (Knight of Cups) and the lady who does not react and keeps to herself (High Priestess). High Priestess is also The Other Woman.
Meanings and Illustrations: Individual Rider Waite Tarot Cards
Eight of Pentacles is work, workplace, workman, employee, and repetitively doing anything (whether productive or not). Steadily, constantly, incessantly – adverbs like that. Construction work, of course, since the illustration shows a carpenter steadily making one identical tile after another.
