Eight of Cups

Tarot Readings for You for August 5, 2013 Monday(c)

Guidance     Here we have the woman who is the provider, supporter, backer or benefactor, and who may quit being that, whether by divorce or because he isn’t doing what she is rewarding him for, or she gets mad. The story applies to business or romance just as easily. There’s a he-does-for-her and she-does-for-him exchange, but the other concepts in the spread are both about ceasing. He can just as easily be the one who initiates the split.

She is divorcing him for what he did: He abandoned her.

The possessive woman came that close to breaking up with him for what he did.

Mama disowns him and quits giving him money for what he is doing.

Mama threw him out of the house to start out on his own.

He started a divorce and the woman who pays for him left.

Her support money from the divorce doesn’t quite do it.

The man does not come through with the support money to her from the divorce.

He precipitated the divorce when he walked out on her.

She keeps him from breaking up with her by babying him.

He started a fight and left the woman who pays his bills.

A divorce doesn’t happen because of what he does for her and what she does for him.

Before things blew up, he was doing something for what she contributes to him.

Tarot Readings: He Quits Being Confrontational (Eight of Cups and Tower)

He quit being confrontational with her help.

He has a breakthrough and changes his ways of doing things because of her input, her contribution.

He avoids doing anything that will set her temper off.

Whatever she does doesn’t set him off.

He avoids confrontation with the woman who cares for him.

Tarot Readings: Unfinished or Aborted Business (Eight of Cups and Tower)

He did not finish and she spent so much money she went broke.

She quit paying him when he got mad and walked off from what he was doing.

She is perfectly capable of doing it, but she got mad and dropped out.

Abruptly, he starts being confrontational with his benefactor or backer.

Eviction is initiated before she can pay.

A competent woman but she was rejected even before she did anything.

Miscellaneous Tarot Readings

Her contribution has made breakthroughs that (ours) just did not.

Queen of Pentacles

Eight of Cups – Tower – Magician

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

The first two cards are about abandoning ship in some way. Eight of Cups is to change course or direction, to drop out, to just quit. Tower is to throw out or be thrown out, rejected or divorced, as well as a temper tantrum, confrontation, disaster, eviction, eruption, or even seizure.

Next we have Magician, the male taking the initiative, and the doing of anything – action itself.

Then we see the nurturing or possessive woman, the woman who pays or supports, who has money and uses it. She is also a businesswoman, the backer or support, the talent. She takes care of and even babies her man and her family.

With these concepts as the elements of our saga, you can see the main story is about a divorce or split, about what he does for her and what she does for him. Temper tantrums or confrontations happen. Quitting and not getting paid is one story, too. Not getting the money after the divorce is another story. Queen of Pentacles is a supporter, backer or benefactor who can quit.

LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

Eight of Cups is an unexpected ending, abandonment, a sudden change or shift (of direction, of anything), a disruption, ending one thing and beginning another as in making a turn off a road. That is what is pictured: A pilgrim on foot has to make a 90-degree turn because there’s a river that does.

Tower is one of the divorce cards that of course also means to reject, throw out of the house, disown, confront and have a blowout or temper tantrum. It can also be a breakthrough, disaster, destruction, explosion, eviction, eruption, or even seizure. Illustrated is the Tower of Babel story in which evil is overthrown, along with the tower. Sometimes the overthrow of evil is the theme it introduces.

Magician stands for the male principle, activity. So a male takes the initiative, does something. The illustration shows the male as the Magician making something happening at his trade, with the usual artifacts of magicians on his table, which are also the suits of Tarot.

Queen of Pentacles is the woman who has control of the money and has ability. She is the generous woman, the backer, the nurturer, the wife cum business partner or Mama who may be possessive. Her Rider Waite Tarot card shows her on an outdoor throne surrounded by vegetation and symbols of fertility and having a large sum of money in her grip.

EXPLANATIONS: [Use the arrow at lower right to skip this and go to Comments.]

All the words of each Tarot card reading you see here are a phrase-by-phrase translation of the scene pictured on those cards: no filler, no psychic impressions, no spirit guide. Word-for-word Tarot Verbatim(TM).

In these group readings, there’s no question (and no Questioner) to limit what the four cards can mean, so they can mean opposite things.

When there is a negative-meaning card (a ‘negator,’ I call them), the readings contradict one another because that card can make any of the other cards in the spread negative. Negator cards mean things like: no, never, not, end, can’t, etc. Never be queasy about the number of ‘bad’ card because it takes two bad cards to say ‘not dead’ and only one to say ‘dead.’

Without a question or a Questioner, pronouns (I, you, he, she, we, they, etc.) are very flexible. I leave out pronouns in writing this as much as possible – awkward to do that sometimes. When I put them in parentheses, feel very free to change them around to suit yourself.

Now in a ‘real’ individual reading, the questioner asks a specific question which provides at least half the information! In an individual’s reading, the parties are identified and sometimes a time frame is too. Here, in a group reading, we cannot do that and so we get more variety of sentences.

Horoscopes are group readings, too. Astrology is based on someone else’s birth data, though, so a ‘solar’ group horoscope never really solidly applies to you! (Astrologers want you to know this!)

Tarot successfully addresses the group of visitors, whoever they are. It provides useful information that applies to their daily lives: They tell you this in the comments, for three years now. Tarot can tell you things about people you don’t know personally – such as whoever on your job has a say in your raise or continued employment there, whether that is one person or many. Visitors report that the information is equally accurate for new visitors as it is for the family of regular visitors.

Do you want to read Rider Waite Tarot, yourself? Start with Learn Tarot by Pictures to get the day’s cards’ individual meanings; then read Learn Tarot by Observation, which gives you the thinking those four cards inspire in a qualified reader. Next, Group Analytical Tarot Cards Reading is the various things those four cards can say (without a question to guide them). Then, Guidance is a summary.

In this way, your intuition allows you to learn to read the cards without much effort if you come often enough. Regular visitors can just put it together.

Tarot Readings for You for April 17, 2013 Wednesday(c)

Guidance    Today’s main focus is on the stages of a man’s maturity, from reckless brat, to handsome young man to mature grandfather. We also cover regressions therefrom: the old man who has a second childhood, and ‘He never was a kid, was mature even when he was a cute young guy’ as well.

Emperor

Sun – Eight of Cups – Page of Wands

4 Tarot Readings: A Mature Man; Growing Up Respectable (Page of Wands and Emperor)

I’m not a good-looking funloving guy anymore; I’m mature now.

The old man quits being a playboy and is respectable now.

I’m not young anymore, I have the look of a senior dude.

I was mature when I was a kid – didn’t get a childhood.

Daddy isn’t talking about his youthful exploits.

Not a kid anymore; he is a grown-up now.

The kid goes on to become a fine young man, and a leader.

You’re no longer a young fella when a kid makes you a grandfather.

He isn’t young anymore, but he is happy in his old age.

What a relief to be a senior dude and not that eager-to-please young fella I was.

He gets out of the house and goes for a walk to be the man in control of himself.

Tarot Readings: Being Old, About Old People (Page of Wands and Emperor)

He feels he is so old he will be gone by the time the little kid is a young man.

I go out of my way to talk to the old man; I enjoy it.

The old man is gone, but his son is his ‘spitting image.’

He is old and never had the son he could be proud of.

Young people have fun ignoring what old people have to say.

When I was a kid I had nothing to do with the Establishment, but now that I am older, I damn well personify it.

All of a sudden the fun fellow turns rigid on us.

Tarot Readings: Fellow Who Didn’t Mature (Eight of Cups + Emperor)

He’s a handsome fella who leaves children behind until he’s old.

A good-looking older man turns into a young fool.

You’re too old to run away from home, so shut up about it already.

The old man quits being who he is and acts like a kid.

People are talking that he isn’t the patriarch anymore; he’s childish.

Daddy left home when this young man was a baby.

Miscellaneous Tarot Readings

Grandpa is never told what a brat Son is being.

When his son abandons the kid, Grandpa is there.

He never was a kid, was mature even when he was a cute young guy.

He is NOT old, he is a vibrant funloving young man.

When the boss retires, the young man is set free.

Sun Here we have a lot of meanings, some unrelated to one another, growing out of the illustration of a very young child naked bareback upon a very annoyed pony he is not even holding onto, having the time of his little short life. Some meanings, therefore, are baby, child, boy, fun and funloving, happy, enjoy, relief (because the boy snuck out of the house and its rules), reckless, brat, playboy, getting free, leaving, getting out of the house, running away from home, getting out from under a restricting situation. Summer is one of its meanings, rarely. As a type of person, Sun is the fella who refers to himself as ‘the kid’ and is the ‘charming baby boy’ type women recognize.

Eight of Cups A pilgrim is forced by terrain to change direction, to depart from the course he is on. A change of direction or an abrupt departure or transition is its core meaning, therefore. It’s not just a change of direction, though, it’s also going another way instead. It can mean walking or a pedestrian, sometimes. If you ask about a pilgrimage or vision quest, Eight of Cups may very well show up.

Page of Wands Here’s the handsome, well-dressed, well-spoken respectable young man who is ‘every mother’s son and every woman’s sweetheart.’ He is the eager-to-please apprentice anxious to fit into a grownup life. ‘The fair-haired boy’ type. Page of Wands also refers to talking, to standing up for what you are or what you believe, to ‘physical’ or the physical body..

Emperor has few meanings. He is the old or older man, the authority or the one with seniority, the grownup, self-control or the man who is in control of himself. Emperor is about maturity, the Establishment, conservative values, and power or clout. He can also represent a tyrant or dictator or being rigid.

In the middle we have a transition, change, a dropping off of one way and going onto another, Eight of Cups, which also can be about a pilgrimage.

Then we have three stages of maturity: The little brat (Sun), the fine young man (Page of Wands), and the patriarch or old man (Emperor) – all male cards. There’s a contrast between the ‘reckless brat/playboy’ of Sun and the respectable (Page of Wands) maturity of Emperor. With Eight of Cups meaning change or transition, our main message here is about growing up.

Of course, Page of Wands also means talking and physical body, good-looking guy, and physical, and of course Sun also means fun, happy, funloving, playboy and recklessness.

Both Sun and Eight of Cups also mean leaving, even ‘getting outa here.’ Eight of Cups can mean ‘abandons.’

Today’s main focus is on the stages of a man’s maturity, from reckless brat, to handsome young man to mature grandfather. We also cover regressions therefrom: the old man who has a second childhood, and ‘He never was a kid, was mature even when he was a cute young guy’ as well.

Guidance     Look for an unexpected limitation that you rise to the occasion to escape. Maybe you just quit saying ‘I can’t’ and put your dukes up.  On a deeper level, today is about fighting your way out of the box to a new consciousness, about your psyche breaking out of a jail to an entirely new phase and never ever looking back.  Today we contrast feeling helpless and being stymied with busting loose and making some noise.

Fighting my way out of the box to a new consciousness.

You break out of jail into an entirely new phase, and never look back.

I’m outa here, you can’t keep the new me down.

When they told me I couldn’t, I forced myself and went out of my way to.

You get right back on the road you were run off of:  They can’t stop you.

Out of the blue, I declare I am going to stand and fight.

You can’t make me, and I’m not even announcing that.

An unexpected limitation pops up, and you rise to the occasion to escape it.

I’m not going to be tied down; I am busting out of here immediately.

You just quit saying ‘I can’t’ and put your dukes up.

I’m outa here, and there’s no way you can cage me again.

.

Both Judgment and Eight of Cups are changing, the end of one phase and beginning of another, and both also mean sudden or suddenly.  In both cases, the change is not a voluntary one and is unexpected.  (Seven of Wands has the ‘unexpected’ aspect as well.)

Judgment is having a new phase, revival or recovery … or something may be happening again, or going back to the way it was (revert).  Many of its interpretations have ‘re-‘ prefixes.  It also means news, an announcement, speak up, or even say, among a few other things.

Eight of Cups is a detour, like having to go around an obstacle.  It means to quit, drop out, walk away, or any sudden end of one thing that puts the story into the beginning of another thing – you know, like getting fired and getting another job, or leaving your home for a new start.  You see the full moon with the crescent moon embracing it: two phases.

The other two cards are being stuck and fighting your way out; or they can also, together, mean ‘can’t fight it.’

I digress here:  Persistently, over the months and years here on this blog, we find that cards that say one thing also say something contradictory.  I am convinced, after mulling this over for a long time, that this is because the same set of circumstances can be handled in opposite ways – and since we have no context to fit the information in (no question, no specific person questioning) – then we get both stories.  And, of course, the same set of circumstances can arise from opposite causes as well:  It doesn’t have to be what is happening; it can refer to the past as well – the past of the story.

Anyway, back to Eight of Swords and Seven of Wands:  Eight of Swords is a female figure blindfolded, loosely bound with hands behind her, in a swamp, surrounded by swords.  Limitations.  This is about not being able to do anything, about ‘can’t.’  It can mean being helpless, ‘my hands are tied,’ being stymied, being disabled or paralysis of any sort, and it can mean ‘contained’ or ‘in a container’ or locked up. Of course it means ‘tied’ in various ways.   With support, it is the actual death card.

Seven of Wands is either defending his turf, or being a mouthy nuisance: both scenarios are common.  Often, this is about a struggle in which the odds are against you (He is outnumbered as his neighbors attack.) but you are going to win:  Stand your ground.  It’s in your face, it’s overwhelming … and, yes, it’s unexpected … sharing that meaning with Judgment and Eight of Cups, which makes three out of four of our Rider Waite Tarot citizens mean that.

Look for an unexpected limitation that you rise to the occasion to escape. Judgment    The angel blows his horn on Judgment Day, and suddenly all the long dead are living again.  So we have an unexpected change that happens to us, the end of one phase and beginning of a new one.  Judgment is having a revival or a recovery, or is reverting to a former state.  It frequently means to return or ‘comes back.’ Notice how many of its meanings have ‘re-‘ prefixes.  Something is happening again, or is going back to the way it was.  Sometimes it refers to news, an announcement, speaking up, say, playing a musical instrument, or a (loud) noise, a honk.   It can mean an angel literally, or the appearance of an angel in a vision quest or séance.

 8 of cups

Eight of Cups   is a detour, like having to go around an obstacle.  It means to quit, drop out, walk away, or any sudden end of one thing that puts the story into the beginning of another thing – you know, like getting fired and getting another job, or leaving your home for a new start.  You see the full moon with the crescent moon embracing it:  two phases.  Look for it to refer to a temporary change – to something that is interrupted but will be resumed.

EXPLANATIONS:

Each and every ‘Tarot Reading’ sentence you see is a literal interpretation of the four Rider Waite Tarot cards drawn and pictured for today. (The literal interpretation is from the illustration on each card.) These sentences are put together by only combining the phrases of what each cards says. In other words, there are NO “filler” phrases added just to make full sentences, and no psychic ability or spirit guide is ever involved.

*Without a question* in a group reading to focus the answer, the four Tarot cards can mean quite contradictory things, especially when the Spread has a card that means ‘no,’ ‘never’ or ‘not.’ These negative modifiers can apply to any one of the other cards.
*Without a question* in a group reading, the pronouns (you, him, her, me, us, them, they, etc.) are more flexible. Whenever you see a pronoun in parentheses, please *feel very free* to substitute another pronoun than the one used. I try to drop pronouns when possible, which, if you’ve noticed, can make for awkward phrasing.

Now in an ‘real’ individual reading, the questioner asks a specific question and thereby supplies at least half the information! In an individual situation, the parties are identified and sometimes a time frame is too. Here, in a group reading we cannot do that and so we get a variety of sentences.

Horoscopes are group readings, too. Astrology is based on someone else’s birth data, though, so a ‘solar’ group horoscope never really solidly applies to you! (Astrologers know this!)

Tarot, on the other hand, is perfectly capable of flexibly addressing any group, including all of the visitors that come to this site. It can also address people you might not even know personally, such as all the people at your job who have a say in whether or not you get a raise.

We have been wondering here lately whether the Tarot Verbatim(TM) sentences are more accurate for regular visitors than they are for people who visit this site only once in awhile or for a short time. Would you help us with a comment please, if you have not been a regular visitor? Just let us know if the sentences are relevant to you. So far, people say they do apply.

Return to this site often and you can put all this together and intuitively see yourself how Tarot Verbatim(TM) works. Regular visitors actually learn to read Rider Waite Tarot cards with very little effort.

Guidance   Oh, the drama of our love lives, and oh, the upheavals we experience in that department. Here is where we risk our mortal sanity, and sometimes our physical lives, as events take on a rhythm of their own, it seems. Escape from its drama is quite the trick. We feel the stings and comforts of love episodes years later.

Are YOU here for the first time? Come in! People love this place!

Full instructions are at the bottom.

Guidance and the Tarot Readings are for you if you just want your daily look ahead. “Guidance” is the summary, followed by your word for word Tarot Readings from the four Rider Waite Tarot cards you see pictured here. Sentences contradict one another because negative cards, in this group reading with no question, can attach to any of the other three cards.

Next time, I’m going to get out before another lover does me dirt.

Tarot Readings: Avoiding or Dodging Love (Eight of Cups + Lovers)

Dodging taking a chance on love one more time.

Fooling around just once more before I leave my lover.

Avoid hooking up with that person, it could be risky.

One lover after another until I no longer fool around with anyone.

We aren’t together any more, and he is in the process of becoming a criminal.

Tarot Readings: Cut off Contact (Eight of Cups + Lovers)

Avoid direct contact when someone keeps trying to trick you.

You got one more chance to get away before you get ripped off by someone you are in contact with.

The person you cut off contact with may be a part-time criminal.

You cut off contact with someone over foolhardy risky behavior.

When they have no ties, no connections with anyone, they may be suspect.

Miscellaneous Tarot Reading

Short-circuiting a connection can be dangerous.

Tarot Readings: No longer in the Partnership (Eight of Cups + Lovers)

He doesn’t quite make partner because he was violating some rules.

He is on his way out of the partnership involuntarily.

We are no longer affiliated with the habitual criminal.

Frankie and Johnny here (but I left the murder part out of our daily group readings). Today Lovers mostly means lovers, with a sprinkling of ‘partner’ and contact or connection. It is the star card, the one the others center around in our story.

Seven of Swords makes Lovers ‘cheating lover(s).’ It is also about criminal, danger, risk and risky, taking a chance, betrayal or double-cross. It would be the assault and murder card too, which, as I said, I have disregarded here. (It is not a card of death, strangely.)

Two of Pentacles is going back and forth, going through a process or routine, repeated action or behavior, a cycle, comes and goes, and silliness. The silliness picks up the recklessness and ‘taking a chance’ of Seven of Swords.

Eight of Cups is to leave, quit, ‘knock it off,’ abandon, drop out, no longer, avoid, and so on. With Two of Pentacles being a process, we have ‘not quite leave,’ and ‘avoid (whatever) before’ – in other words, incomplete action, incomplete leaving.

So this is the drama of what can happen and does happen in our love lives.

LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

Seven of Swords shows a daring fellow carrying off the enemies’ weapons in broad daylight … with the blades in his bare hands. A special ops fellow. This Rider Waite Tarot card in Tarot Verbatim (TM) speaks of risky (and possibly self-defeating) behavior, double-cross, thievery and assault and murder and other criminal behaviors. It is about taking a chance.
Two of Pentacles Here is a juggler doing his routine, dancing while he keeps the plates moving, wearing a goofy costume. Ships are tossing on mountainous waves behind him. This Tarot card in Tarot Verbatim(TM) means: going back and forth, going through a process or routine, repeated action or behavior, a cycle, comes and goes, and silliness.
Eight of Cups Abrupt anything. Off of one and onto another, possibly to return to the abandoned path. The pilgrim is forced, in the illustration, to follow the terrain that takes him off course. Eight of Cups embraces: to leave, quit, ‘knock it off,’ abandon, drop out, no longer, avoid, and so on.
Lovers has several branches of meaning, normally. Today, not so much. It shows Adam and Eve, the couple of lovers. The only meanings that aren’t about lovers that we use today are: affiliated, partnership, connection, contact, and together.

I N S T R U C T I O N S  &  Explanations

(Comments are below this.)

Did you come here just for your predictions? – If so, you are done when you finish reading the sentences of Group Analytical Tarot Cards Reading.

Each Tarot sentence is a literal-interpretation reading of the scenes pictured on the four cards you see. Only what each of the cards says – phrase by phrase – no fillers – no psychic ability used. The readings are about you and the people around you.  They are about today and the days around it. Tarot, all by itself, talks to you. This is a demonstration of that .

Tarot will address any group flexibly, as it does here of ‘all the visitors.’ (It can address ‘all the people at work who have a say in my raise,’ for instance, without you knowing who or where those people are.)

Horoscopes are group readings too.

Astrology has to be based on someone else’s birth data, though, so it does not solidly apply to you just because of where the sun was when you were born. (Astrologers know this.)

Emily wants to know whether these sentences are more accurate for regular visitors than for people who have come only a few times. Would you help with a comment, if that is who you are? Please?

Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things,  especially when the Spread has a card that means ‘no, never or not.’ That negative modifier can apply to any one of the cards.

Without a question also the pronouns (you, him, her, me, us, them, they, etc.) in a group reading are more flexible,  especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads.  When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute.  Notice how, as much as possible, we drop pronouns, which makes for some awkward phrasing.

The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information! In a ‘real’ reading, the parties are identified (including the gender of the questioner!), and so is the time frame if there is one. In this group reading, we cannot do that, so we have variety.

2-5-14 ADVICE  Adversity can be a shortcut to personal success. Looking objectively at a painful situation, you decide to leave and do so.  Suddenly you are calm and things are under control when you break up.  Finding a way to bypass all those difficulties is quite an achievement and so is understanding how to handle hostility without engaging in it.  Today we find parallels in achieving business success by changing course, achieving personal success by getting along with folks, and turning off the road in traffic to avoid some hazards.  It’s about looking ahead, it is!

Is this the first time you come here?   Well … what to do:

*Go to Advice (above ) which is a summary of the Messages. (Advice is everyone’s favorite part.)

*Go to Group Analytical Tarot Reading below.  One or more of those sentences has something to say to you.  Intuitively pick those out and decide whether to encourage or suppress them.  They are about you and the people around you.  They are about today and the days around it.  (It is a group message like a horoscope,  except Tarot isn’t based on someone else’s birth data,  so it can be specific,  accurate,  detailed and direct.  Our experiment here is  “How much more accurate is it?”)

Did you come here for your predictions? –  You are done now –  See you tomorrow.

Eight of Cups Hermit – Three of Swords – Chariot   GROUP ANALYTICAL TAROT READING Tell the visitors here something useful and meaningful to them.     Breaking up/Leaving (Three of Swords + Eight of Cups)   Observing how breaking up has put you on a course of being in charge.   Looking objectively at a painful situation, you decide to leave and do so.   Suddenly you are calm and things are under control when you break up.   Adversity creates patience and thus is a shortcut to personal success.   As soon as you decide to leave, a friend helps you with the heartache.   Decides to be more patient to avoid a breakup.   It doesn’t hurt anymore, you are calm and getting things done.   Decides to divorce and drops out of sight.   Can’t find him when he makes up his mind and gets a divorce.   The old man quits, gets in his truck and disappears.     Vehicle Damage and Hazards (Three of Swords + Chariot)   Search for a damaged vehicle that is off the road.   Cursory inspection of damage to the vehicle.   Driving at night detouring around a road hazard.   Doctor was leaving just as the heart attack arrived in the ambulance.   Paramedics dropped everything to treat the stroke.   Driving at night in such a storm he decides to get off the road.   To avoid hazards, get off the road at night.       Avoids/Quits a Nasty/Hostile (Three of Swords + Eight of Cups)   Observe how (he) becomes hostile when (he) doesn’t get his way.   (He) is calm and responsible, (he) quit being snarly.   Chooses to avoid an/his abrasive friend.   (He) sees being nasty got (him) nowhere, and he becomes responsible.   Take all the ill will into account and decide to avoid it.   Choosing to be a sane person, I leave when they fight.   All of a sudden he is mature and can handle opposition.   Understanding how to handle hostility without engaging in it.     Adverse Factors to Success/Achievement (Three of Swords + Chariot)   Finding a way to bypass all those difficulties is quite an achievement.   So much is against getting this done that I give up for now, but I am still looking for a way to.   Being an overnight success takes patience and suffering.   Reject this way and find another way to succeed.   Sees he fell short of achieving his goal because of adverse conditions.   Adversity creates patience and thus is a shortcut to personal success.   Looking for another way to get it done, this one is a reject.   The decision-maker has not quite eliminated it from consideration.   Can see why this way was not liked and not implemented in the project.   He came to help you succeed but he suddenly turned against you.

Eight of Cups Hermit – Three of Swords – Chariot   LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING     Hermit and Chariot are mature men or individuals who accomplish a purpose by their own actions; both are out on the road. Hermit emphasizes understanding, observing, looking for, helping and calmness. Chariot emphasizes success, achievement, drive, getting the project done, having things under control; he is also a vehicle of any kind.   Both Three of Swords and Eight of Cups involve leaving. Three of Swords is animosity in a breakup, is rejecting (anything), is nastiness or hostility both to (anything) and as a personality trait. It can also be a storm or damage or a heart attack/stroke. Eight of Cups is to detour abruptly from one (anything) to another (anything) – from a direction of any kind. It also involves timing, as in aborted or premature or disrupted or intercepted anythings.   Hermit, Chariot and Eight of Cups are all on the road. Hermit is looking where he is going and knows; Chariot arrives successfully; Eight of Cups makes an unscheduled turn.   So we have an echo of the thought of it being wise to leave. That is our main message in today’s sentences.     LEARN TAROT BY THE PICTURES     Hermit Mature enough to be offering practical help to travelers in distress, confident enough to be on the road at night, Hermit emphasizes understanding, observing, looking for, knowing and calmness. We aren’t using his other meanings today.

Three of Swords Schism, breaking up, animosity and hostility, being against, opposing, being nasty – any kind of divorce, including rejecting one or another choice. Three of swords also refers to heart trouble, surgery, storm and heartache. One of those Rider Waite Tarot cards whose meanings you can guess: A heart with knives piercing it, and gray clouds and rain behind it.
Chariot You can guess its vehicle meanings. This brings up ‘drive’ which suggests ambition. That is further extended to success and accomplishment: This is the decision-maker whose project succeeds. Not obvious is that Chariot succeeds deliberately through strategy. This is an esoteric Rider Waite Tarot citizen: The reversed colors on the sphinxes indicate their different natures, and Chariot (with his magic wand) is getting them going in the same direction, the direction he wills them to.

Eight of Cups takes a quick right turn here because the terrain forces him to. He too is on the road, but he gets off of it at least for now and heads in a different direction. The end of one thing begins another or vice versa. Continues on despite a disruption. It’s just another phase, but I’m out here.

Advice When a person is young in his or her love life, and when a person is young in his or her career, changes of direction happen, addresses are abandoned, jobs are abandoned, lovers are abandoned, and it’s on to the next with little ado … or at least with less ado than would later accompany such a change. A personable young man or woman can overnight be on the road to success by a strategy of switching course.

Is this the first time you come here?  Well … what to do:

Eight of Cups Empress – Chariot – Knight of Cups       GROUP ANALYTICAL TAROT READING Tell the visitors here something useful and meaningful to them.     Romance, About the Boy (Empress + Chariot/Knight of Cups)     There goes his willpower, he is approaching the most attractive one. He decides not to be sweet to his best girl. He ran his car off the road flirting with a dame. He decides to quit approaching the lookers. He offers to go out of his way to drive her. He introduced her to this successful dude, and she was gone. He makes up his mind to be this ideal-for-him woman’s boyfriend right now. He makes up his mind to quit being the siren’s boyfriend. His briefest of love affairs with The Goddess is an achievement. He shows up suddenly and courts the lady very deliberately. All of a sudden it is the nice guy who wins over the trophy lady. He is very nice to pretty ladies whether it gets him anywhere or not. Suddenly such a young man is in charge, and here’s this attractive woman there. Do not let him drive the sexy girl’s car. He offers to go out of his way to drive her car.   Romance, About the Girl (Empress + Knight of Cups)   The pretty lady’s young man is an early success, he has such a courtly manner. She is well off and her cute guy doesn’t even have a car. A nice looking woman who runs when she sees a nice guy who is successful. She attracts a boyfriend but he chooses to leave her. She and the guitar player drive off. The good looking woman decides to leave with the boyfriend.   Getting Ahead, Ambition (Chariot)   She is in charge of the project when the young man is out of there. Be really nice to the secretary to get ahead fast here. He appears out of nowhere and gladhands his way to being a manager and having a fine-looking girl. He aims to politely leave this place behind, with his beautiful gal. She gets ahead on her looks without even being polite. The two of those gracious nice-looking folks are instant successes. He offers to leave to be put in charge where the girl is. With his help and her talent, she is an immediate success. She doesn’t have a boyfriend, by choice. She puts her resources at his disposal to get this project over with immediately.

Eight of Cups Empress – Chariot – Knight of Cups       LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING     Here’s the good looking (sexy) woman who is well off, Empress, and the Nice Young Man, Knight of Cups, who is also the boyfriend. They are well-matched: both are gracious social young people.   Chariot is about willpower (drive), doing a project, doing anything deliberately, on purpose … and being successful, getting ahead. Chariot is a vehicle, so ‘cars’ get involved. Actually, Chariot is any vehicle at all.   Lastly is Eight of Cups which means an abrupt change, abrupt appearance (or disappearance), something done immediately, as well as an interruption or disruption to a course … a course of action or a course of direction. It’s a detour, so it also has a whiff of: not doing it now, but intend to get back on course.   So we have stories of romance and of getting ahead. It’s more about intention than action. There’s an in-the-moment feel to this, and also no real depth to the messages today. A vacation from some of those ‘profound’ messages is timely, you think?   LEARN TAROT BY THE PICTURES

Empress is a resource (traditionally pregnant), is a sexy good-looking woman – as well as the ideal woman, a glamor figure. She is based on the ancient love goddesses. See the female symbol in what we think of as a valentine but which was a sex sign in olden times? She is his darling, and may be his kept woman.
Chariot is about strategy, the willpower to purposefully get ahead, the drive to complete the project successfully. The Project Manager. To have your hands on the steering wheel of your life and your eyes on the road. As I have said before, the esoteric notion to this Rider Waite Tarot card is he is using a wand, not reins; and he has hitched the sphinx that will only go right on the left, and hitched the one that will only go left on the right of his chariot, so that they are forced to go where he wills: ahead. His strategy allows him to outsmart the limitations of his situation or environment.
Knight of Cups goes with the flow, makes the first offer of friendship, introduces himself, offers to help, is your boyfriend, is sweetnatured and polite. Is often cute. In the same way Knight of Pentacles’ horse matches the way he is drawn, so does Knight of Cups’ horse: the cute curved lines and the muted colors are patient and soothing. He is often a young man, and is definitely warm and fuzzy.
Eight of Cups blips off … or onto … the screen. Appears or leaves early. Detours or runs off the road. Is instant or immediate. An interception or disruption. To go off in another direction. To quit or walk away from. To abandon. The very briefest of appearances … over with before it even begins. Abortive. To give up in the middle, even to go A.W.O.L.

Advice Suddenly you are on the right track, have the right look, have the right words to connect with the accomplishment and its corresponding reward. That chapter begins without a title, without warning … and often ends that way too. ‘When you’re hot, you’re hot’ they say. Suddenly, after years of kissing frogs, one of them turns into a Prince or Princess: same unexpected turn of events. Look for this. Spot it. Be on it.

Eight of Cups
Ace of Pentacles – Page of Wands – Lovers

Love (Lovers)

Proud of his sudden success at love.

Proud of (my) success in leaving (my) lover.

All of a sudden we are the perfect couple, he says.

All of a sudden he is the perfect lover.

Walked away from that money to be with his/her love partner.

Before he leaves, he declares his love by giving her a ring.

He falls just short of being the perfect lover.

He said he is the perfect lover, so I walked off.

You can’t buy love, but you can reward a cute guy/girl.

All of a sudden, Lover-Boy/Girl is the perfect partner.

Money and Good Looks (Ace of Pentacles + Page of Wands)

Your handsome loving guy has enough money to leave there.

Suddenly have enough money to look good for your lover.

A good-lookin’ young man with money will ditch his lover(s).

It’s not his looks that got him that partner, but his bucks (his success).

Business: Success/Money/Perfect (Ace of Pentacles)

Success is me now: to heck with luv!

Suddenly you succeed and are everyone’s contact.

Spoke out of turn but said the right thing to connect.

By default, they share credit/glory for the accomplishment.

He is proud of his success without a partner.

Given assurances (you) would be protected in the transition.

Is the perfect spokesperson for unscheduled contacts.

(You) spoke directly to the right contact to shortcut (this).

The right spokesperson to bypass straight to the Partners.

It’s not his looks that got him that partner, but his bucks (his success).

The money is in his name, not joint.

He paid it as a single man, not as a couple.

We either have a perfect connection when we talk, or we get disconnected.

Are told the couple unexpectedly did come up with the money.

On the Road (Ace of Pentacles)

The two of them discuss a detour off the main road.

Telling them this road is a shortcut.

He left on the road early with his partner.

He and his partner on the road arrive early.

Ace of Pentacles is success and money, and Page of Wands is the fellow with the good image, well-dressed and well-spoken. Page of Wands is the spokesperson and Lovers means contact or connection.

Ace of Pentacles is a road, and Eight of Cups is to detour off of a road.

Page of Wands is the good-looking well-dressed handsome (young) man and Lovers of course is a lover or love partner.

Lovers + Eight of Cups is leave the lover. Ace of Pentacles + Lovers is perfect lover, success at love.

Eight of Cups is a sudden change of direction, or simply means abrupt or abruptly, which can apply to anything.

LEARN TAROT BY THE PICTURES

Ace of Pentacles One of the self-explanatory illustrations, Ace of Pentacles shows the stereotypical diction of ‘the straight and narrow’ path. White lilies for purity, the rose arbor for victory, the hand with the gold in it for money and success. This is a good stained-glass door design.
Page of Wands A salesman. The son every mother wants. Glib, well-dressed, nice-looking ‘fair-haired boy.’ The fellow a lot of girls dream of marrying. He carries the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, you know. Often this Rider Waite Tarot card in Tarot Verbatim ™ simply means to speak, talk, speak up, stand up, to say the right words or have the right word.
Lovers Layers of meanings for this one. Besides the obvious, it means protection, connection, contact, overseeing, divine or angelic protection, standing next to another person or standing with them, partner as well as love partner. Also, a couple, joint or jointly, and ‘the two of them’ or ‘the two of us.’
Eight of Cups Parallel illustrations here. The full and sliver moon suggests a beginning and ending; the pedestrian changing direction because terrain forced it suggests ending one direction and beginning another, with intent to resume later. So this is about an aborted attempt, a premature action, something ‘over with before it began.’

Mama don’t allow the kid to go out lookin’ at night.

She knows instinctively how to make the child quit doing that.

I lay my hands on the brat when he ducks out and I go out hunting for him.

No more babies; she goes to the doctor to prevent that.

Looking/Searching for a Way (Hermit + Eight of Cups)

Search for someone who ran off the road driving recklessly, to fix him/her up.

Searching for a way she can have children; she miscarries.

Hermit

Sun – Strength – Eight of Cups

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

Sun and Eight of Cups are both leaving abruptly – very different stories (Sun, impulsively ducks out of the house for a little fun, recklessly; Eight of Cups, a detour or change of direction on a trip, probably for good reason or cause).

Next thing is that in both Strength and Eight of Cups something isn’t going to happen. In Strength, it’s deliberate prevention; in Eight of Cups it’s a detour.

Next is all the cards are outdoors and three of the four are traveling. Sun is just in the back yard; Eight of Cups is on a pilgrimage; Hermit is out on the road looking for travelers in distress.

Both Strength and Hermit have spiritual overtones and are people of self-control and considerable life experience. Strength overcomes (including his/her own weaknesses) and Hermit is the celibate and patient monk. (Make that ‘monogamous man’ these days.)

Sun is a child and Strength is discipline. Hermit is on the road and Eight of Cups is a going out of his way. Sun is a dumb kid and Hermit is a wise old man.

LEARN TAROT BY THE PICTURES

Sun Baby boy has snuck out of the house, against the rules, and is having a great time nude on the wicked pony. Whee, this is fun: He even carries a huge banner in his left little hand. He is obviously oblivious to what the pony is about to do; he is having fun in the sun like a playboy who never heard of child support. Color him a drunken driver or bungee cord jumper.

Reckless, spontaneous, uninhibited, impulsive, brat, child, childish, childish escapade, playboy, leave the house, outing, fun, sunshine, daytime, vacation.

Strength An experienced combatant knows the moves instinctively and is confident about handling yet another martial exercise. This confidence telegraphs itself to would-be attackers. The same is true of social conflict and spiritual conflict. Bullies of any level or department of existence have a sense of smell and they are cowards. They are often friendly to people or entities they even suspect can handle them. Professional courtesy.

Strength exemplifies the concept that when you know how to handle it, it does not present itself. When you have the perfect comeback, no one says that to you anymore, drat it.

Eight of Cups To go the other way. To detour or go another way. To leave early, drop out, quit, change the way, depart from the way (run off the road), to change direction. It’s over before it begins. Abandon or abandoned.

Illustration is a traveler who is forced by the terrain to change direction.

Hermit Out looking, hunting or searching for. Take a look. Looking where you are going. Travel, night travel. Seeing things as they are. You can see. Seeking, learning, and wise or wisdom. A paramedic, physician, doctor or healer of any kind. To be on the path, be spiritual or be sincerely religious (any religion).

Illustration is a monk searching for people to give aid to at night. He carries a lantern which can stand for enlightenment.

Our Daily Spread for January 18, 2012 Wednesday©

Advice contrasts total involvement and disengaging entirely; being all for it or all against it.  It is about walking away from the scene you are part of as a member – like family, team, community, the values you currently reflect.  But it is also about not fighting it, not fighting with people, not being involved with people even, and not struggling to make the income that makes you ‘one of the good people of the community.’

Without a question to focus the answer,  four cards can mean contradictory things,  especially when the Spread has a card that negates other cards.  Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are more flexible,  especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads.  When a pronoun is in parentheses,  feel very free to substitute.  The question in a  ‘real’  individual reading supplies at least half the information!

Marriage (Ten of Cups)

Avoid getting married or ‘die trying.’

He will be getting out of the house by quarreling.

They aren’t going to have fights in their marriage.

We will always be happy together; we don’t fight anymore.

The marriage will end violently.

I try to avoid it, but I’m going to get married.

Family (Ten of Cups)

Family fights are going to stop.

We are going to avoid fights in this family.

Left the family and making every effort to stay that way.

We will always be happy together; we quit fighting.

Trying so hard to get out but is still accepted as one of the family.

Family will get him out of the house, he is combative.

Will abandon that combative family as early as (I) can.

Belonging/Community (Ten of Cups)

They all are making good money, are averse to leaving the organization.

Will be such an effort to leave that great place to live.

Against moving away from home: always be with us.

It was hard to get out of there before it was time, but I will be a civilian now.

After the activity, everybody went home looking forward to more gatherings.

Making a Living (Three of Wands)

All my effort goes into making a living, it’s dark when I am going home.

Disenchanted (not happy anymore) with the struggle for making money.

People who struggle and don’t quite make a living.

The people who are making money drop out of involvement in causes.

I was prosperous back there, but I will be struggling to make money.

Quit trying as soon as my income brought a good life.

I have arrived, will not be struggling.

When the income is cut off he goes home and fights with them.

Not Belonging/Leaving (Eight of Cups)

Always avoid contentious people.

Quit being one of those people who struggles for a living (drop out).

Dropping out of the competitive team for a while.

Is not going to be in their team competition anymore.

Will not be actively involved in the community.

He/She is going to drop out of aerobic exercise.

I am just going to be happy and not get involved in anything.

It was hard to get out of there before it was time, but I will be a civilian now.

We always are going to leave those community activities early.

There will be a big effort away from family values.

Will be trying sooo hard not to be a joiner.

Will abandon that combative family life as early as (I) can.

I got out of that clan, I was against what they are about and always will be.

A big effort to avoid people from now on.

Five of Wands
Three of Wands – Eight of Cups – Ten of Cups

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

Family, Ten of Cups, is flanked on the left by Eight of Cups leaving (abandoning, getting out, dropping out early) and on the right by Five of Wands fighting (trying, making an effort, putting energy into, involved in activity). There’s our story.

The remaining card points to a continuing action and/or to the future. Three of Wands is often ‘will be’ or ‘continue to be.’ It refers to income, thus to ‘making a living’ and to ‘making money.’

Ten of Cups refers to marriage and community or group or even ‘people’ as well as to family. It is also ‘family values.’ It is ‘the good people’ in the sense of the respectable prosperous people who live in the good neighborhood, kind of like the ‘good’ of Hierophant. So Ten of Cups can be a church group, a gathering of the folks in the neighborhood or condominium, etc. Your ‘bad guys’ group is Ten of Pentacles; this is the ‘good guys’ group.

LEARN TAROT BY THE PICTURES

Three of Wands refers to continuing action and/or to the future. Three of Wands is often ‘will be’ or ‘continue to be.’ It refers to income, thus to ‘making a living’ and to ‘making money.’ Its illustration is a merchant who is watching the ships come in that carry his new merchandise and his coming profit.

Eight of Cups To heck with it, I’m outa here. Dropping out. Getting out of one and into another. Detour, change or correction of course. Leaving early. The union of the new and the full moon says it all, doesn’t it? – love that! His illustration shows a pilgrim (yes, tradition says that’s a person on a pilgrimage, a religious trip) changing his course because the terrain forces it.

Ten of Cups is marriage, family, the good people of the community, community life, wholesomeness, being happy and well-adjusted (hate that term!), getting together or togetherness. It is one of the cards that referss to children as well: a boy and a girl. Illustration is the ‘American Dream’: the house on the golf course, happy embracing couple, two happy kids, rainbow over Their Home. (No dog!)

Five of Wands suggests sweat! Getting all worked up about; putting energy into; trying hard; fighting or struggling; being averse or against; opposing with all your might. Getting involved, gung-ho. Conflict, combative, competition or compete or competitive. Aerobic exercise. Violence.

Advice is about doing something about where you find yourself and with whom, because it affects who you are: Get out of that bad home life to be who you can be. Just getting away from the people who cause me to feel bad makes me a better person. Proud not to be one of the people who are the problem. My good looking guy turns out to be one of those criminal types. He goes away to better himself and falls in with the wrong fraternity.  Bad combinations of people bring out the worst in one another:  Each could be somebody else somewhere else.  Who could I be where?

Eight of Cups
Ten of Pentacles – Devil – Page of Wands

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

One glance and you know this will be a moralistic session. We begin with the dysfunctional people (those people) Ten of Pentacles followed by the Devil (bad, wrong, vice, evil, ugly, nasty, hate, brutish or brutal … anything awful. These cards are like bad company (and they mean that): The good in them is canceled out by each other’s presence, kind of like a juvenile gang or police backup or the ghetto. This walk on the wild side can vary, can be heavy or factual or somewhat lighthearted. It can also refer to physical rather than social dysfunctionalities.

Then we have the clean-cut honest and earnest young man, dressed and speaking well, Page of Wands. Our boy, we are proud of our son. The ‘fair-haired boy’ of legend.

So it’s a relief that the final card means an abrupt detour, going in another direction unexpectedly, not finishing the course and dropping out.

Our story is of changing one’s ways … either way. The nice boy can go to college and become a drunk in a fraternity; or the patient can get out of the treatment center a well person, or the criminal can clean up his/her act.

Speaking of that: Just because Page of Wands is usually a fellow doesn’t mean this can’t be about a female person. Pages are flexible.

LEARN TAROT BY THE PICTURES

Ten of Pentacles Bad company, dysfunctional relationships making dysfunctional families, people bringing out the worst in one another because they are bad combinations. Shared human vices suppurating into neighborhoods, cities, counties, states, nations that reflect those particular vices. Just try being a hippie in one of those Puritan colonies. (Today we look at the darker spectrum of Ten of Pentacles because it sits next to Devil.)

The illustration here shows the Elder on his throne, gloating as the couple who produce his grandchild have a ‘discussion’ in which Husband stares off while Wife earnestly beseeches him, the aforesaid progeny squalling and pulling on her clothes. (The kid senses the toxic tradition of the family culture?)

This illustration brings up the wealthy and the ghetto, politicians and criminal groups. If the question is about the middle class cultures, this Ten of Pentacles in Rider Waite does refer to same.

Devil Bad anything, in Rider Waite. The Marseilles deck has a different take, but here we look, obviously, at the Christian concept of hell’s CEO: The unwashed brute reptile with horns. And today Devil applies to the dysfunctional ‘bad people,’ so we bring out the darker parts of the two darker cards here. Devil often means ‘horrible.’

Its focus is on being bound (or obligated, even, as in a contract), being limited; but you can see the loose chains that humans can remove. That is the main point of Devil, philosophically.

Here is a list of the words it contributes today: bad, toxic, criminal, nasty, sick, the creep, feel bad, hates, horrible, vices, drunk, objectionable, bad life, jailbirds, gone bad, criminal types, wrong, dirty slob, stuck, disease, illness, handicap, problem, prison, corrupt, abuses, plague you, sinners.

Page of Wands There’s our clean cut boy, the son we are so proud of, the fine young man or ‘fair-haired boy’ of lore. Appearing after Ten of Pentacles and Devil, of a cleaned-up act (or a corrupted youth). He is well-dressed and well spoken.

Eight of Cups Short-lived, we are outa there, going off in another direction entirely, abandoning ship, dropping out, onto something else, and it’s over with before it begins. Here it refers to the change – the bad way of life and the good way of life – because that is obviously what these four Rider Waite Tarot citizens are about.
