……………………… Stories galore. We have work, keeping at it, and the usual routine in Eight of Pentacles. We have dramatic failure … on our faces, inert in the dirt … in Ten of Swords. We have connecting up, contacting, a partner or partner in love, and a direct connection to God (represented by the angel with his hair on fire overlooking the human couple). So we talk about failures in work, love, and spiritual life being the norm, as we just keep at it.
………………………….. Eight of Pentacles You are doing what you do here – same old things. It applies to work primarily, but also to anything routine, repeated, habitual – in love, social life, protection, spiritual life, or the habit itself, the routine itself. Eight of Pentacles persists. You see a carpenter at his work bench pounding away. A professional carpenter never misses a stroke in a rapid evenly-spaced staccato rhythm. That action is what holds the meanings of this Rider Waite Tarot card together. Eight of Pentacles is all about work, job, employment, labor. Some habitual (hee-hee) translates for it are: ordinary and ordinarily, over and over, one more, again, try again, keep at it, and keep being.
………………………….. Ten of Swords is very dramatic, and it can accommodate deep- and wide- scale disasters and tragedies. But there’s no murder today because Eight of Pentacles is specifically about routine circumstances. (Remember what I said a while ago about Rescue Cards?) Ten of Swords’ ordinary (There’s that Eight of Pentacles word again.) meanings are about hurt feelings and failing. Disability comes in under the wire since the figure in the picture can’t get up. Injury, hurt and hurting, disgrace, humiliation, wreck, hopeless, onerous, bite the dust, flame out … and Ten of Swords can translate ‘horrible’ and ‘terrible’ and ‘hopeless.’ With all the right support cards, Ten of Swords can describe a martyr complex, and it can mean self-pity – including self-pity that one is entitled to feel.
………………………….. Lovers‘ meanings are all over the place. Once in a while we have a spread in which most of them are used. Not today. Lovers, besides the obvious, commonly is about connecting, contacting, being on the same side, being partners, ‘we,’ and ‘us’ and ‘the couple,’ together, or ‘with’ another person, and partnership (whether in business, love or politics).
The angel traditionally is the one who chased Adam and Eve out of their garden, as you can guess by the trees next to the humans there (She gets the snake, and he gets the tree of life.) so he is ‘higher ups’ overseeing them. But the angel also doubles as a guardian angel protecting the humans, so you have ‘protection,’ even as insurance coverage, and ‘God on our side’ and ‘connect with God or my higher self,’ and ‘relating to God.’ Since Lovers means ‘love relationship’ a lot, it also means relationship with God. Since the angel is a spiritual plane being, this Lovers card can mean the spiritual plane … not very often though – there are other cards for that.
Occasionally, your spread will emphasize passion using the volcano … and remember that volcano, because this card will show up to warn about one, or to refer to one.
Well, I said ‘besides the obvious,’ and here is ‘the obvious’: Naturally Lovers means love, love relationship, love life, in love, lover, love partner, with the one you love, loved one – anything along the lines of love connection at all.

Eight of Pentacles ……….. Lawyers say ‘in the ordinary course of business,’ and that is Eight of Pentacles all over. This is the main work, job, employment, labor card in Rider Waite, and it also means the routine that you do over and over, and an activity that you do over and over. Construction trades too since he is a carpenter. It’s only a small stretch for it to mean keeping at it, persisting, routine, habit and habitual. ‘Again’ and ‘each time’ and ‘step by step’ and ‘one after the other,’ and ‘busy’ are some of the other words you can use when Eight of Pentacles shows up. It means labor as a bookkeeping entry and as a political party too.

Ten of Swords …………. has come to a bad end here, stabbed in the back like Julius Caesar. Treachery, disaster, horror, terrible loss, ignominious disgrace, tragic failure, murder or other hideous death … all of these are the province of Ten of Swords, who is the lead card for them. However, we have Ten of Swords lite today because of the Eight of Pentacles’ indication that this is routine.
In that case, Ten of Swords is hurt and hurt feelings, pain and suffering, broken in spirit, disabled, humiliation and disgrace, failure, loss and losing, a hopeless, hope-less, situation or person or animal. Also, Ten of Swords can be mere self-pity.

Lovers ………….Connections are what Lovers is all about. It starts of course with love connection, love relationship, loved one, love-anything. Adam and Eve are a couple, of course, so a pair of people, partners (any flavor); and Adam and Eve bring God into the story. The angel is doing double duty as a guardian angel and an overseer or watcher, because, if you recall the saga (which, by the way, originates in Babylon where they had a thing for gardens if you recall), Adam and Eve were evicted by an angel who guarded the place against their returning to it. It’s this overseeing angel that brings in the higher-ups theme, the protection theme. The angel represents the entity he works for, God, so we have connecting to God. The persons here are standing side by side, which happens in Temperance too, so we have God on your side as well as connecting or partnering with God. Partnership brings in business meanings, and so does ‘higher-ups.’ Then, as I said, the angel also comes up and ‘my guardian angel’ type thing, and that protection theme slips into coverage by insurance too.

Practical Perspective: Together with friends/lover for the usual (or traditional) heavy activity. Together with a friend doing the things you usually do. Exercise routine together with a friend. Hard work as a favor to a partner. Making a consistent effort to be sweet to a loved one. Working together, giving it your all, with a close friend/lover. Trusted partners keep fighting, trying, or struggling together. Me and my close buddy are against this or are fighting this. Me and my close friend keep fighting. A friend contacts you, and you are back to doing what you did in the past. He makes an effort to give her love gifts often. Couple works hard for children. Romance Perspective: Past lover keeps trying to contact. Romantic time with lover – the usual exercise or activities. Lovebirds have the usual lover’s quarrel. Together with friends/lover for the usual (or traditional) heavy activity. Hard work as a favor to a partner. Working together, giving it your all, with a close friend/lover. Going all out to make the house a sweet place to be in with someone you love. Making an effort to keep this an old-fashioned love affair. Couple tries often and hard to have a child. Lovers try hard to make a baby. Interesting that it’s again the weekend and again the card that means ‘work’ shows up. It must work on weekends! What I came to consider as I was writing these was: Super Bowl Sunday – so I put that sentence first, “Together with friends for the usual or traditional heavy activity.” Since each of Rider Waite Tarot cards are among the ones that have several different meanings, we develop a lot of different messages today in this spread. Two of the cards mean being together with someone you are close to (Six of Cups and Lovers), so we have a lot of that. The other two often mean hard work. So, today’s first spread is about getting together and doing something, including something romantic. With the suggestions of lovers and children (Lovers, Six of Cups), the romance may be productive from Mother Nature’s viewpoint! As I was typing this, I thought of helping someone move to a new house: ‘Hard work as a favor to a partner.’ Is anyone moving a friend, or a friend helping you move, on Super Bowl Sunday?

Practical Perspective: Feeling bad because you let the guy get the best of you. He gets (them/you) to cooperate with him against (their/your) best interest. Feeling bad because he took advantage of your trust. Yeah, this con artist is out to get your last dime, but you are going to make him be good, be harmless. He gets (them) to cooperate, against (their) will or (their) best interest: It’s (THEIR) loss! He is a successful mooch. People who love him are the poorer for it. Times are hard so he ‘makes it’ by taking advantage of the people who love him. He gets ahead by any means possible and justifies it by feeling like a victim. Losing it all to a con artist makes one ambitious to succeed by helping others. Romance Perspective: Being in love with this self-serving fellow who aims to take advantage, you will be sorry. He is in the ghetto, getting ahead any way he can, and he is in love with you. Loves a bad boy and aims to make him sorry. This spread warns you that there’s someone looking to take advantage big time: It contains ‘the mooch,’ the Six of Wands, and ‘poverty,’ the Five of Pentacles. Not good. But the Chariot, handling the situation to your best advantage, is also there. The Ace of Cups‘ several meanings switches the possibilities around, too. So don’t panic about this, if it fits what is happening to you: There’s plenty of room to duck!

If you can’t turn it down, you may as well have sex. Can’t resist the temptation, goes ahead and has sex. No sex! No way! Forget it! If you can’t get it out of your mind, do it. You can’t resist the temptation, so you have to just not be present. You can’t refuse and not be there: You HAVE to! You have to just forget it so you don’t keep turning it down. You must refuse, don’t forget. When you don’t have a question to hang your answer on, sometimes you get so many possible variations of an answer that it is amusing. Two Tarot cards in a row that mean to refuse, then one that that can mean, ‘forget it,’ ‘may as well,’ and ‘to not be present.’ Then the last Rider Waite Tarot card means both ‘sex’ and ‘have to’ or ‘must.’ So you can weave these concepts around and around – which is exactly what it is tuning into: contradictory ideas about going ahead and having sex. We’ve ALL been THERE!
