Here’s why: That fellow is a knight candidate who is lying on the sarcophagus (coffin container) of the church’s resident saint or hero, meditating on his life purpose as a knight, as part of the knighthood ritual. So this is a vision quest, and he is to report his vision to the bishop, who will then decide whether he can be a knight or not.

Four of Swords ……….. Most Tarot books give ‘not participating’ as the basic meaning of Four of Swords. Tarot Verbatim™ agrees with them. Here are the elements of Four of Swords’ meaning: The knight candidate meditates overnight on the coffin cover of the resident saint or hero of his church, praying for a vision of the purpose of his life as a knight – a vision quest, if you will. He reports this to the bishop, who decides whether he is worthy of knighthood. So you have degrees and kinds of ‘not participating.’
Most of the time, in ordinary stories, Four of Swords means things like: Don’t do anything. Get some rest. Do not respond. You have already done what it takes, now just wait for the result. Stay put. Nothing is going to happen (either reassurance, or ‘Don’t expect results.’). Dissociate, or dissociation. Couch potato, or lazy person. Four of Swords is a very minor support card for death, since it shows a person lying on the coffin, in that pose.
In some Tarot company, the meditation application is what Four of Swords is about – Four of Swords and Hermit, and Four of Swords and Judgment, in particular. These could be about the prayer vigil or vision quest and the vision.
Lastly, note that Four of Swords means ‘the absence of,’ or ‘in the absence of,’ and does so in such a way it acts as a negator even though it isn’t really one, per se. Example: ‘no kids’ is Four of Swords and Six of Cups.

Six of Cups…………. Six of Cups has quite a spectrum of applications, most of them warmhearted. It is a story-maker. You see romance, childhood, children, gift, sweet life, and home-sweet-home in the illustration itself. The past is a big part of Six of Cups’ application – past loves, old friends, the good old days, sweet memories of the past, nostalgia, cozy place to be.
Six of Cups is a real estate card too. It’s that house in the good neighborhood for children, the safe neighborhood, the old established neighborhood, and it’s an old or quaint or cozy home. It associates children with home, often, as when the wife gets the house to stay in with the kids.

Nine of Pentacles .………… Nine of Pentacles, you are sure of yourself, you are content with what you have (you have enough). Nine of Pentacles is independent, private, minds her own business (and you mind yours!) and unavailable. She ‘has a life,’ as we say. Don’t ask her for a favor. She is where she wants to be and is staying there. She isn’t necessarily rich or well off; she is content and independent. This is the card for a single woman who lives alone and likes it that way.
Nine of Pentacles is stationary regarding finances too: She mainly is living within her means – either owns a business, works at home, has an impregnable niche, is an heiress or has some other access to whatever she needs to live the way she is living: no money worries here, in other words.
Another element of Nine of Pentacles’ style is doing as you please. So Nine of Pentacles can show up just for that – just for describing someone’s arbitrary behavior, or advising you to do as you please, especially to not interact, mind your own business. This characteristic of Nine of Pentacles is expressed in the presence of the snail (in her own good time), her being in her robe in the middle of the day, and her hobby, the falcon, being this daytime activity: leisure.

Four of Swords………. In Rider Waite, Four of Swords shows a candidate for knighthood doing the vision quest about his life purpose as a knight, which is part of the knighthood ritual. He spends the night lying on the sarcophagus (coffin cover) of the church’s saint or hero, and reports to the bishop. So Four of Swords is about time out, not doing anything, meditating, sleeping, not participating, being indifferent to whatever activity is happening.

Nine of Pentacles………. is content with whatever she already has, and is competent to administer whatever her lot in life is. She can be a person who is secure in a niche in life; she can be a stay-at-home administrator or wife; she can have something to do with animals, pets or agriculture. She mainly is secure, does not need anyone, and is happy by herself. She is mainly independent, self-sufficient, self-confident, self-assured.
Ace of Swords………. is at the pinnacle of something – anything. Win, champion, victory, achievement: These are some of its words. Ace of Swords is also an imperative: must, gotta, have to, forced, make them, etc. It also means ‘the hard way’ and ‘assertive’ or aggression, or a weapon (any kind). ‘Armed’ is easy to see, isn’t it?

Nine of Pentacles and Four of Swords are both about not being involved, not participating, not responding, being indifferent. Nine of Pentacles is involved in her own activity or world (and not anyone else’s) – is proudly independent and content with whatever she has already … she has a life. Four of Swords is retired, ‘time out,’ asleep, is not participating and not responsive … even in a coma.
Pair the other two cards, and they speak of being ill at ease or anxious about dealing with other people. Page of Swords is feeling threatened, is excited or upset or irritated … or thrilled … maybe for no good reason. Three of Pentacles is doing one’s part in a deal, relationship, meeting, contract or agreement.
Three of Pentacles is the deal or relationship – any social or commercial exchange – going through. Four of Swords is ‘nothing doing,’ no activity.
Four of Swords is resting; Page of Swords is frantic.
Our subject is doing one’s part, and how a person who isn’t doing what others feel is his or her part drives them crazy. It’s also about tuning out what others expect, in the interests of your own peace and quiet.

Nine of Pentacles is content with whatever she has, so she is rich. She is disinterested in other people and their affairs, neither asking nor giving anything from them. Independent, self-sufficient, minds her own business, doesn’t know the neighbors. She owns her circumstances, be it home, business, empire or a trailer. See her play with her bird, wearing her robe still in the afternoon in her vineyard, a snail expressing she does things in her own good time.
Page of Swords Something goes bump in the night and your nerves light up. “Something’s afoot.” Blood is stirred, on alert, guarding the turf. You feel touchy, on edge, irritated, angry … or excited and even thrilled. Page of Swords is adrenaline. See him whirling around, weapon in hand, and miles of nothing all around him.
Four of Swords is turned off, asleep, not participating, unresponsive, not interested … time out. The knight meditates in the church on the sarcophagus of a famous saint or hero. He will have a vision about his life purpose. Today he is a party who has opted out of the action.
Three of Pentacles is getting together and getting it done, whether it is a relationship, a business transaction, an agreement or settlement. The architect demonstrates with the blueprint that he is entitled to his final draw, the large one.

Each Tarot sentence is a literal-interpretation reading of the scenes pictured on the four cards you see. Only what each of the cards says – phrase by phrase – no fillers – no psychic ability used. The readings are about you and the people around you. They are about today and the days around it. Tarot, all by itself, talks to you. This is a demonstration of that .
Tarot will address any group flexibly, as it does here of ‘all the visitors.’ (It can address ‘all the people at work who have a say in my raise,’ for instance, without you knowing who or where those people are.)
Horoscopes are group readings too.
Astrology has to be based on someone else’s birth data, though, so it does not solidly apply to you just because of where the sun was when you were born. (Astrologers know this.)
Emily wants to know whether these sentences are more accurate for regular visitors than for people who have come only a few times. Would you help with a comment, if that is who you are? Please?
Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things, especially when the Spread has a card that means ‘no, never or not.’ That negative modifier can apply to any one of the cards.
Without a question also the pronouns (you, him, her, me, us, them, they, etc.) in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. Notice how, as much as possible, we drop pronouns, which makes for some awkward phrasing.
The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information! In a ‘real’ reading, the parties are identified (including the gender of the questioner!), and so is the time frame if there is one. In this group reading, we cannot do that, so we have variety.
