Four of Wands – Hierophant – Four of Pentacles

.………..………. .……..…….. More than one theme here. We have fitting in and not fitting in. Four of Wands is being one of the family, a member of some group; Four of Pentacles is not good enough or not interested, and is an outsider (outside of town in the picture). And since both Four of Wands and Hierophant are ‘the upstanding people,’ Four of Pentacles’ not fitting in becomes being inferior. Plus, since Four of Pentacles means ‘not fully,’ well, he doesn’t fully fit in when Hierophant joins him as the ‘fitting in’ phrase. That’s one theme – the fitting in and belonging (or not) one. Four of Pentacles can mean ‘not quite’ as part of its ‘lacking’ or ‘deficiency’ branch of meanings.

However … Four of Pentacles also means a deep feeling, and Four of Wands is belonging. Add Hierophant, which means accepted and accepting, and you have “Deep down, I feel I belong here; it’s home.” That is the opposite of what the same cards say too. This happens. The question you asked may apply the meanings that fit (We don’t have a question to do that, here). You look to the rest of the cards in that spread, or you draw some more with either the same or another question, to sort it out.

Another theme is money. Four of Wands are the rich; Hierophant is the middle class; Four of Pentacles is the poor (broke, you know).

This is where we get all the real estate sentences, because Four of Wands also means real estate (home, house, building). Four of Pentacles doesn’t have enough money for (Four of Wands) the real estate or the house. (So these two say ‘house poor,’ which we had yesterday, come to think of it.)

Four of Wands is a marriage card and is the moneyed people; Four of Pentacles doesn’t have money and is, or feels, inferior – so here’s a story about ‘marrying well,’ marrying into the wealthy class (Four of Wands) or into the middle class (Hierophant), depending on how you interpret the remaining card.

Hierophant means ‘deserve’ and ‘entitled to.’ Four of Pentacles doesn’t get enough, and isn’t talking, feeling inferior and left out. So we have not getting the attention you deserve – from family or other group, when you add Four of Wands in.

We have the family in Four of Wands. Hierophant makes it a respectable family; Four of Pentacles makes it an inferior family, not up to par, or has something to hide. And here we go: Four of Wands and Four of Pentacles say an inferior family.

This spread also says ‘Deeply held belief in organized religion.’ Here, Four of Wands is the ‘organized’; Four of Pentacles is the ‘deeply held,’ and Hierophant is of course the religion.

Four of Pentacles and Hierophant say these things: Not quite proper. Not quite the official story. Not quite the moral thing. Not very religious. The signs are hidden. Not quite up to par.

One could get dizzy putting all these things in one basket as we are doing here. In ‘real Tarot life,’ of course, you have context to work with. You have the question; you have whatever is known about your issue or subject; you have surrounding cards to break a tie.

The reason for doing a Celtic Cross spread is to break those ties: It has checks and balances built into it … especially in Tarot Verbatim. In real Tarot life, remember, Tarot is talking to you: Tarot is your subconscious wanting to chat with you. Give it half a chance, and it … and you … accomplish that chat.

Four of Wands.…..A public wedding, a society wedding held at an estate or public building, brings quite a few trunks and branches to Four of Wands’ meaning tree. Hierophant brings out the ‘good respectable family’ ones. Four of Wands is being a member of a group (Hierophant emphasizes ‘in good standing’) or family; and Four of Wands is a house, home, or building – real estate.

Four of Wands as a building is in good shape, up to code, with Hierophant. With Four of Pentacles, it is substandard. Since Four of Wands is family, Four of Pentacles makes ‘our family isn’t normal.’

Naturally, Four of Wands is one of the positive marriage cards, with an illustration of a wedding. Hierophant makes that ‘married on paper,’ since Hierophant means ‘official,’ and even means a certificate. Hierophant and Four of Wands also say ‘holy matrimony,’ since Hierophant is the pope. (The other positive marriage card is Ten of Cups. It too means the good upstanding respectable people.)

Hierophant……....Yes, that is the pope in the red robe. He is doing his normal routine, a ritual with clergy. The deeper meaning of Hierophant, which is not apparent from this picture, is that this ritual means one thing to the public, and another to the people in the know, the professionals. Not so much about any deception; it is about ‘face,’ about ‘what’s fit to print.’ (If you are talking about ‘face’ in a negative way, Six of Wands and Two of Cups are your go-to cards. If you have them along with Hierophant, then, yes, something is afoot regarding the official presentation.)

The ordinary and usual meaning of Hierophant grows out of the routine accepted practice the pope and clergy are doing. Just to give you an idea, Hierophant usually means things like:

ordinary,

usual,

accepted, official,

certificate,

good,

respectable,

okay,

religious, church,

accept and accepted,

approve and approved,

papers, documents, certificate,

in good shape, a good thing, up to par,

physical and physical plane,

official and officially, ‘on paper,’

in good standing,

should and what it should be – and ought,

up to snuff, up to par, etc.,

middle, average, median – and hence middle class,

committed, commitment, etc.,

‘face,’ and reputation,

holy (as in holy matrimony),

deserves

name,

label,

entitled,

behaving,

conforming, fitting in,

passing (as in a passing grade),

moral and being moral,

the physical aspect of anything

decency

harmless,

mundane,

‘real world.’

Four of Pentacles……… Four of Pentacles’ many interpretations have crisscrossed today’s readings. I have gone into Four of Pentacles exhaustively on other posts, so we cover the current ones today.

Hierophant is being the way it should. That attracts Four of Pentacles’ lack and less than meanings – a lot of them. Here they are, from the sentences above: whatever you are short of; lacks a; in less than good shape; substandard – not up to code; not up to par; doesn’t measure up to; a loss position; not quite; not what; less than; not up to snuff; not quite okay; not _ enough; felt the need; doesn’t get the attention; short of money; can’t afford; doing without; reservations about.

Four of Wands and Hierophant are the upstanding citizens, which brings out Four of Pentacles’ self-restraint meanings. Here they are: won’t let myself be __; keeps himself from being; not letting myself.

All this respectability also causes one to hide some things and keep quiet about them. Four of Pentacles means those things too, and here are those words: just being quiet; not talking; secret; has a secret; keeping secrets from.

Today’s other meanings for Four of Pentacles are about those feelings he has: deep down, I feel; hug; homesick; attachment; sulks; shy guy; shy.

In the picture here, we are seeing a fellow holding onto his money for dear life, sitting in the middle of a road outside of town, staring numbly straight ahead. He seems to be an outcast from the town. He is holding onto a secret and is repressing his deep feelings. He could be very short of money or even a miser. He is the quiet type. The way he is holding himself is a hug.

You walk into a house or other place and feel immediately at home. You meet someone and you click, even where there are obvious factors that go against that. Shopping for a dwelling, you have to be there to sense its atmosphere, its soul, before you know whether you want to buy. Intuitively, you choose what parts of yourself to make your official self, and what elements to add to that image. Some people grab a template stereotype, it seems. The part you repress may cause stress or weariness, and may air itself out unexpectedly. There are scenes in which you fit in naturally, and scenes in which you make yourself fit in. Today’s gentle suggestion is to be aware of this sort of thing.

Guidance We feel inferior if we are somehow below the standard of people in our group. This applies to just about everything and just about everybody: It is the herd consciousness of mammals. We tend to recover whatever standing we have lost, or feel lost ourselves. To a lesser extent, this psychology also applies to exceeding that standard: We hesitate before we get too rich or too saintly as well as not rich enough and not well-behaved enough.

We have a decrepit house (Five of Pentacles) and a house ‘up to code’ (Hierophant).

And all of these opposites are, of course, accompanied by ‘a change of circumstances’ in Judgment.

Overall, the message is: people recover from bad times, with family.

LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

Five of Pentacles Bums on the street, no home, no hope, no clothes against the cold, still walking, crippled in a snowstorm at night. Desperate and down, hard t imes, misery, missing and being lonely. Being so numbed by despair you cannot see the warm church which would feed you and bed you down for the night. Mother and son are together in this.

Four of Wands is uptown. The wedding of scions of their society is a public affair. This is the fine house that people who are powerful and have money inhabit. Four of Wands evokes public buildings as well as spouse, marriage, family, respectability and being in the good category.

Judgment A sudden change, especially a change back to a former condition, especially a former condition that was more desirable – as in restore, recover, revive, new life. The angel on Judgment Day wakes the dead with his big announcement on the horn, and they return to life.

Hierophant The official (propaganda) story, the ‘face’ we put on and the ‘face’ public institutions put on, of respectability and normalcy. Behaving oneself, being moral, the physical aspect of things, the usual or same-old-thing. Religion, religious, church (anything), ceremony, official standing or title or state – as in a marriage on paper.

Each Tarot sentence is a literal-interpretation reading of the scenes pictured on the four cards you see. Only what each of the cards says – phrase by phrase – no fillers – no psychic ability used. The readings are about you and the people around you. They are about today and the days around it. Tarot, all by itself, talks to you. This is a demonstration of that .

Tarot will address any group flexibly, as it does here of ‘all the visitors.’ (It can address ’all the people at work who have a say in my raise,’ for instance, without you knowing who or where those people are.)

Horoscopes are group readings too.

Astrology has to be based on someone else’s birth data, though, so it does not solidly apply to you just because of where the sun was when you were born. (Astrologers know this.)

Emily wants to know whether these sentences are more accurate for regular visitors than for people who have come only a few times. Would you help with a comment, if that is who you are? Please?

Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things, especially when the Spread has a card that means ‘no, never or not.’ That negative modifier can apply to any one of the cards.

Without a question also the pronouns (you, him, her, me, us, them, they, etc.) in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. Notice how, as much as possible, we drop pronouns, which makes for some awkward phrasing.

The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information! In a ‘real’ reading, the parties are identified (including the gender of the questioner!), and so is the time frame if there is one. In this group reading, we cannot do that, so we have variety.
