Three of Wands – Here’s an anchor card: one you look to early on because it has few and reliable meanings that also are common in sentences. Three of Wands is: (1) money and income; (2) coming to; (3) continuing steadily; (4) future and future tenses. It translates ‘brings’ as in ‘brings on’ as part of the ‘coming to’ set of meanings.

And that’s it.
Hanged Man – Hanged Man is getting the idea. You can see his head all lit up. It’s some kind of new perspective, or at least some big idea, because he is upside-down. The illustration reflects the feeling you get of the world being upside-down or topsy-turvy when your world-view shifts without giving you time to adjust.

Hanged Man applies to two main types of these shifts. One is in what we call the ‘real world,’ and it includes those connecting-the-dots realizations that we express with language like these: Why didn’t I think of that?; getting it; it strikes me that; so that’s it!; bright idea; who’d-a-thunk-it; and that flash realization of something we have suppressed because we did not want to recognize it – the ‘ring-around-the-collar’ moment, or the finally being told what you knew all along about a betrayal but were hiding it from yourself. Of course, ‘realization’ and ‘recognize’ are two favorite Hanged Man words.

The other involves insight, hunches and premonitions, and actual enlightenment when it occurs in one big dump instead of being drip-fed. These are otherworldly experiences. They include: getting a feeling, psychic impressions and other ESP, inspirations, sudden insights like eureka, sensing, and inspiration which includes The Muse. Hanged Man is also psychic, and translates that word.

Hanged Man is also a card-carrying member of the ‘know’ Tarot tribe. Here, you find it often translating ‘know’ and ‘understand’ and ‘see’ and ‘getting the idea.’ Along this line today, Hanged Man translates ‘mental’ and ‘makes sense’ and ‘bright idea.’
Eight of Pentacles – The phrase ‘workaday world’ epitomizes Eight of Pentacles. Ain’t nothin’ esoteric about our Eight of Pentacles! You can tell by looking this is the card for work, job, employment, labor. It also means ordinary, routine, and mundane.

Eight of Pentacles is also the Tarot card for hammering away at it – for keeping at it, for doing the same thing or the same action (repetitive motion) over and over, one after another, every time. It refers to ‘getting the job done’ every once in a while, and it also specifies a person as the one who is doing the hands-on part.

Once in a while, Eight of Pentacles translates ‘labor’ in the sense of labor expense, a labor party (political) or a person who is a laborer, or who ‘works with his hands.’

Hanged Man – Hanged Man is about things extrasensory, and about consciousness. Heroes or gods in several myths hung themselves on trees for three days and sacrificed a body part or body function for ‘wisdom’ or psychic abilities. The illustration expresses the feeling you get – upside-down with your hair on fire – that you get when a thought from ‘out there’ strikes, especially the first time.

Its meaning expands, of course. ‘Realize’ is the most common translate for Hanged Man, as are all sorts of words about ‘mind’: getting an idea, thinking, knowing, consciousness, see, sense.

Words and phrases that describe that turned-on state also belong to Hanged Man: intensely, feels, feeling in your bones, and turned on.
Eight of Pentacles – A carpenter is at work making one after another item steadily, as is his routine. Eight of Pentacles’ most common words involve work, workplace, routine, keeping at it, and ‘one after the other.’

Eight of Pentacles also means forms of ‘to do,’ as Magician does – and being the one who does, as Magician does. Phrases today like: to do what makes; you’re the one who is doing; what he is doing; doing things.

The routine task we see in the picture also brings things habitual into the purview of Eight of Pentacles: always, steady, consistently. The gerund, or ‘-ing’ form sometimes belongs to Eight of Pentacles: keep (do)ing.
Ten of Cups – The picture says ‘one big happy family,’ and Ten of Cups is one of the positive marriage cards. It means married, married with children, happy marriage. It says ‘home life.’ It’s also the good people, and is associated with living well. Like Ace of Pentacles, Ten of Cups suggests that being good is associated with prosperity.

Ten of Cups translates ‘everybody’ and ‘people’ and phrases like ‘all of us.’ It is a group of people – from the couple to an international organization like Four of Wands. Since it also means happy, it also is ‘all the happy people’ or ‘others’ happiness.’ Ten of Cups can be mass consciousness too (usually in an upbeat way).

Well, we seem to be on the subject of fighting and resisting things, don’t we? The first Rider Waite Tarot card here, Five of Cups, is to lose; the second, Seven of Wands, is to battle or resist or fight against; the third, Eight of Pentacles, is work or keep doing something; and the last, Hanged Man, is a eureka realization or psychic impression. So our message today is about finding what does not work.
MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT CARDS
Five of Cups is those times when we are fixated on disappointment, when it did not turn out the way it should have, and we are not focusing on going ahead with our lives. Spilled wine is the illustration on the card. Our person-in-mourning is oblivious to the full cups. We have all been there.
Seven of Wands is another battle/resistance/stand up against card. It can also be the mouthy teenager type person. Raising hell. It is about a concerted effort, about trying against the odds, resisting pressure. Illustration is a fellow defending his property against some neighbors who want to push him off of it.
Eight of Pentacles is the job, work, persistent effort. We see the carpenter dutifully making one after another identical objects at his bench.
Hanged Man is realization, psychic impression, knowing, thoughts, inspiration, idea or ideas that strike. It depicts the feeling you get when something you ‘already knew’ takes on another dimension. You feel upside-down, you feel the energy in your head.

Two of Wands is about the future, about security, profit, and financial security. It is about a plan or planning. It is about foreseeing.
Eight of Pentacles keeps at it, is working or is a worker, so employment subjects and efforts are featured. Repetitive actions, persistence, keeping at it. The carpenter is banging out one identical pentacle after the other. Ever heard a professional carpenter driving nails? You will never forget it, but will want to!
