High Priestess and Ace of Cups are both spirituality, both involve religion, are both about serenity, peace, understanding, quietness … and are both cards that stand for female gender. So these two have a lot of overlap (which complicates exact phrasing of the readings, of course.)

High Priestess is the spiritual and mental planes. She is a spiritual adept. High Priestess has a religious application in the Kabbalah symbols and in the ‘B’ and the ‘J’ pillars, which are in both the Old Testament and Kabbalah. (Those are about the poles of mercy and severity, and if I remember right, they are by the Ark of the Covenant in the part of the temple that is classified.)

Ace of Cups is staunchly Roman Catholic, and has quite a few meanings that we use here: God, love, health and healing, agreement, cooperation, flow, good, ease and easy, knowing and being expert, woman and lady (and ‘she’ and ‘her).

So we have spirituality, religion, peace and quiet and female. Not much story there. So we look to the other cards, and … darn … it makes these more-so. Ten of Wands represents extremes. It also means slow, difficult, progress, too much, burdensome. The man in its illustration is walking and making progress, so the other cards, as spiritual ones, make this ‘the path,’ which makes it ‘the difficult path.’ And that’s as close as we come to drama today.

Remember whenever you see Ace of Cups and High Priestess converge, you have yourself a religious/spirituality theme, and maybe a woman theme.

High Priestess.……..High Priestess emphasizes feminine traits, since she stands for the feminine principle. What we use today of these is being the lady, staying, being sedentary, knowing. High Priestess is all about being spiritual today because Ace of Cups joins with her so we have the spiritual plane, a spiritual adept, an expert, staying home or staying in one place, a woman who knows and keeps quiet.

Ace of Cups…….Ace of Cups is our star card (the one the others aspect a lot) today. Ace of Cups is love, so when you put High Priestess with it, you have loving the lady, and the lady loves. Ace of Cups is God and High Priestess is knowing and is spiritual, which gives us knowing God. Ace of Cups is good, so we have a good woman (or even a godly woman). Ace of Cups is agreeable and cooperative, so we have a woman who gets along with everybody. (Ten of Wands as the extreme makes it ‘everybody.’) Ace of Cups is health and healing, and High Priestess is a spiritual adept, so she is, or can be, a healer or someone who ‘knows all’ about health and healing.

……………………… High Priestess is the spiritual plane and a woman who knows, and the illustration of Ace of Cups diagrams a human’s senses being the channel through which Holy Spirit – represented by the dove there – flows into mass conscious. The way that is done is that those five streams represent the human’s five senses, and they are flowing into the large body of water, which represents mass consciousness. The dove with the wafer represents the presence of God because in Catholic masses, they ring a bell that makes that so. So these two cards together – High Priestess and Ace of Cups – speak of a human channeling the presence of God from the spiritual plane to the minds of men through that human’s individual consciousness. There. I said it.

Ten of Wands………Ten of Wands is making slow progress in a difficult undertaking. Here today, he modifies the meanings of these other two very similar cards (High Priestess and Ace of Cups), so today he is using his ‘long time’ and his ‘too much’ meanings, although we have the ‘step at a time’ and we have the ‘Hang in there, it’s difficult doing it the hard way like that’ ones.

High Priestess – Queen of Pentacles – Five of Wands

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

High Priestess and Queen of Pentacles are smart competent women. Both of them can be bookkeepers. They both have a life: High Priestess is an expert and she lives in peace by herself, usually a single woman. Queen of Pentacles has money of her own, is the matriarch of a family and/or her husband’s financial backer and/or partner.

High Priestess, by virtue of being sedentary and/or staying in one place, appears as ‘The Other Woman’ too. She is the quiet woman. She is passive, isn’t doing anything, and is known for waiting. She is the holder of secrets, the psychic, the Tarot deck itself (title of the book in her lap is TARO).

From ancient lore, High Priestess is also the feminine principle as a result of being the second Tarot card in the deck and therefore the receptive principle. (Magician as the first card is the active, male, principle.)

Queen of Pentacles is the caretaker. She is loyal to family, devoted to her clan. She can be possessive of her man, and often in readings she is about possessing something.

Five of Wands is rivalry and fighting. That creates a story of the loyal wife who takes care of, and maybe is the support of, her man – and there’s another woman, a rival – and the women fight over him.

High Priestess in business is the brains, the advisor, the expert, the one who knows the company’s guarded secrets. Queen of Pentacles, then, is the hands-on member of the team, the resource for the boss. High Priestess is a paper person; Queen of Pentacles is a financial person. Queen of Pentacles can be in her husband’s business as his ‘right-hand.’

Five of Wands and Ace of Cups, the remaining two cards to our spread, are fighting and loving. That could be fighting with the one you love. Add them to the two women we describe here, and you have stories. The two women can obviously be rivals, and can also be lovers. They can be helping out (cooperating) in a fight.

Ace of Cups means cooperating. The two women can be cooperating with one another, can be trying hard to cooperate or trying hard to get cooperation. Ace of Cups is making peace. The two women can be making peace between factions or rivals, or between themselves.

Ace of Cups and High Priestess, he loves the other woman.

Ace of Cups and Queen of Pentacles, he loves the woman who supports him and/or cares for him devotedly.

High Priestess and Five of Wands is a fight with the other woman.

Queen of Pentacles and Five of Wands is a fight with the loyal caretaking possessive gal.

Five of wands is energetic activity, trying hard, competition and rivalry: the team’s effort in business.

Five of wands is also being combative, fighting, and exercise or energetic effort. Five fellows are whacking one another with boards as if it were sport.

Besides the meanings we have covered already, Ace of Cups means good health, being harmless, female, a flow of any kind, God and channeling divinity or Holy Spirit. Ace of Cups is an overtly Roman Catholic card in Rider Waite, with its symbolism of the wafer and the dove flowing into consciousness (water) and continuing out into the world.

So we have such themes here as rivalry for love, trying hard to cooperate, exercise for good health, and making peace between combatants.

LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

High Priestess knows and stays, is not associated with activity. She is the brains and is associated with learning and books, so she can be a bookkeeper. She stands for the occult concept of female principle: passive on the physical plane, active on the mental and spiritual. This card has all sorts of Kabbalah symbols on it.

Queen of Pentacles is capable and competent, and takes care or supports – usually her man whose business she participates in. She is pictured with money in her hands, which makes her a bookkeeper potentially. Fertility symbols abound around her. She is the matriarch.

Five of Wands shows activity, rivalry, fighting, trying hard, expending energy, exercise and being combative. It is also about competition and competitiveness. Five fellows are going at each other with boards in what we hope is some kind of contest or game.

Ace of Cups is love, cooperation, good health, being harmless, female, a flow, God and channeling divinity or Holy Spirit. It is an overtly Christian card in Rider Waite, specifically Roman Catholic in the origin of its symbolism.

This is another spread that applies equally to both genders in the sentences that use High Priestess as spirituality.

Romantic Perspective:
Leaving life as it was and marrying the lady you love.
Lady you love is away from the marital home.
She leaves life as it was and settles down to marry for love.
She is staying with her loving family and parting from the other life.
Life will be better as a happy married woman.
He will have a better life married to a lady who loves him.
He is leaving his happy marriage because he loves the other woman.

Perspective of Not Belonging/Disloyalty:
Being alone and leaving the loving family.
Private philosophy is to be by (your)self and get away from loyalty to any clan.
Is quiet about distancing him/herself from the family that loves him/her.
Keeping it to (yourself) that (you) are no longer cooperating with (your) own kind.
Keeping it to (yourself) that (you) no longer love (your) own people/family/community.
No longer a member of (your) own community/family, (you) have something to hide.
These people shy away from their own community and quietly cooperate with one another.
Have ideas of my own, am leaving all those people I was fond of behind.

Perspective of Belonging/Loyalty:
Love your own people and secretly distance (your)self from the rest.
Being loyal to your own group and secretly heading away from other loyalties.
Leaving the former life behind and heading home to stay with the loving family.
She is single and is headed back to the family and community that approves of and loves her.
When you are left alone in the world, you go back home where you are loved.

Perspective of Spiritual Journey:
This spiritual journey is to be one of God’s people.
A spiritual journey that is about love for people.
Everyone benefits from a spiritual journey.
(She) is one of the people who is getting into knowing divine spiritual secrets.
People who love God are on a spiritual journey.
People who love one another are on a spiritual journey.
Very quietly headed in the direction of love for others.
Her expertise is of benefit to everyone.

The Six of Swords is right in the middle here, going from one thing or place to another. On either side of it is love, God and cooperation, the graceful Ace of Cups on the left and the good people, the family that loves one another, the community or clan on the right. Above it all, the High Priestess influences the theme with spirituality, secret knowledge, being quiet and being alone. So right there you have being alone and leaving the loving family or being single/alone and going to the loving family.

The Six of Swords is a journey, and a journey in consciousness as well, so the High Priestess gets together with it to make a spiritual journey. And the Ace of Cups as ‘being with God’ gets together with the Ten of Cups, the good people, to express ‘God’s people.’ Ace of Cups also brings out loyalty relating to the journey away from one and to another place, loyalty and being accepted. Both the Ace of Cups and the High Priestess bring out spirituality, the Ace of Cups along the lines of being infused with the presence of God. Oh. And the High Priestess is a single woman as well as The Other Woman. These elements are the pieces of the puzzle we put together in all the ways we see them fit.

Remember, these many possibilities of interpretations are because we operate here with a question that supplies no specifics. Your question or subject, when you consult Tarot, is at least half the material, at least half the answer.

Advice is that we do directions in life from one mindset to another: You are on such a trip, so best know where you are going and where you are leaving. Are you, for instance, headed away from the mindset you were born into, or are you content with it?

Meanings and Illustrations:

Ace of Cups: This is such a healthy card. It is a blessing. Its main meaning in the Rider Waite school of thought is the state of perfection the body attains when it is channeling the flow of divine energy, love, in all five senses. Those five streams stand for the five senses. Today it is acceptance, God or divinity, love, loyalty.

Six of Swords: Both a journey in consciousness and a trip from one place to another. A strong theme of life having been fairly awful and going to be a lot better. Water represents consciousness; and the artist of Rider Waite Tarot, Pamela Coleman Smith, makes it a point to paint the water on the right side of the boat as choppy and on the left as calm.

Ten of Cups: This is the ‘happily ever after’ marriage card, which also means the community of good (prosperous) people. The illustration shows mama, papa and two kids admiring their palatial home – kids dancing ‘oh goody-goody’ – together, parents’ arms hugging one another and outstretched to the sky where a rainbow arcs over their home.

High Priestess: She is being spirituality today, as well as doing a stint as a single woman, the Other Woman, being alone, being quiet or secret about something. She knows, as in knows spiritual secrets. The symbols of occult wisdom surround her as she sits there with one of them a book labeled ‘Taro.’

Eight of Wands
Star, Two of Cups, Three of Cups

Romance Perspective:
This is a grand love affair: a whole lot of love talk and sharing of lives.
The couple gets together and talks about how they love one another and are sharing freely.
They are sexually close and love one another more and more – so happy together.
They are thrilled to share each and every thing with their counterpart.
Together, these lovers have more and more prosperity to share – They are thrilled and happy.
There is no need to say more. Two cards mean a lot of conversation, the Star and the Eight of Wands. Three cards mean loving another person: Star, Two of Cups and Three of Cups. The Two of Cups means a sexual couple, or a grand love affair. This is a theme so entrenched it does not need a question to limit its material. It’s about love, love, love.

Advice is that this is somewhere around you. Being in love.

Meanings and Illustrations:

Star: Pour out enthusiasm, love, talking. Illustration shows a woman who is happy and singing, doing some kind of bath routine, pouring something into the bathing pond. She is feeling good all over.

Two of Cups: Often, Two of Cups in the Rider Waite/Tarot Verbatim school means there’s reason to mistrust someone you trust. Sitting where it sits here, those teeth are pulled: It means a sexually bonded couple. In the illustration a couple pledges their troth with the caduceus overhanging the cup.

Three of Cups: So happy together sharing the profit and the good feeling. One for all and all for one. This card is kind of an expansion of the previous Two of Cups. The girls in the illustration are celebrating the good life and their harvest/profit together.

Eight of Wands: Talk, more and more, each and every thing. The illustration shows all those wands flying in the air, arranged to look like written messages, hence ‘talk’ as well.
