….. …….…… ….. Here we are again with two very similar Tarot cards in our three-card spread. Judgment and Hanged Man both mean these things: inspiration, a sudden thought striking, awakening, ‘getting it,’ realization, a vision, a whole new idea, a new perspective. They have their unshared meanings too of course: Judgment’s meaning change, a new phase or new life, and ‘suddenly; Hanged Man’s subconscious and spiritual applications. Together, they often say ‘change the mind.’ And Hanged Man is a vision, and Judgment has an angel making a statement.
So who’s their neighbor for all this realization and change? Five of Pentacles. Bad times, lack, doing without and being broke, hitting bottom and dark night of the soul. Pitiable, desperate, unloved strays on the cold dark street.
The main message, therefore, for today is plain: The jolt that happens *when you hit bottom and realize it* gets you to thinking and creates a new better turn of events.
Judgment and Five of Pentacles state the core meaning of the majority of today’s one-sentence readings: hitting bottom and waking up, realizing a situation is desperate, a change … to or from … hard times. Feeling so bad, and recovering.
Hanged Man and Five of Pentacles describe the spiritual awakening we call Dark Night of the Soul (a term in Roman Catholic theology). Dark Night of the Soul is, after the summit or mountain-top experience – the revelation, or vision, or awakening – you look back and see ‘who I used to be’ and you look ahead and see ‘who I am not yet,’ and you are bummed out. Hanged Man Hanged Man is a new perspective, a whole new idea about something you thought was familiar, a reinterpretation of your reality, a discovery that changes the whole story. Hanged Man calls forth a lot of sayings like ‘turned on its head,’ ‘brains are scrambled,’ and ‘brainstorm’ that reflect this upside-down feeling of a shift in perception. Something comes to light, whether the light switch is inside you or outside you. ‘Inside you’ would be subconscious; ‘outside you’ would be a discovery of some sort.
Hanged Man, as the subconscious side of things, means intuition, hunch, gut feeling, inkling, and ‘a little birdie told me.’ Hanged man is an inspiration or bright idea, too, and it very commonly means ‘know’ and all its synonyms and variants.
Five of Pentacles Five of Pentacles’ illustration clearly is about hard times, the dark nights we all go through, doing without necessities, losing a home, being unloved and unappreciated, complications, being dead tired, what you are missing … and missing it, feeling sorry for someone or for yourself. Being sick and tired of it, or just moping – feeling that miserable, whether it’s based in solid reality or not – ‘Woe is me.’ It’s about being sick, crippled or handicapped or on the street (including being thrown out of the house for the night). This is the card for stray animals … and people.

What does it take to make him see the light? – or her, of course. We wait for this person to hit bottom because it will take that crash to wake him up. Sometimes it’s ourselves. We ‘get it,’ and realize we ‘got it’ late … “What was I thinking?” Or sometimes necessity is the mother of solution and the situation isn’t desperate, just inconvenient. Judgment Changes usher in a new phase or new life, or a resurrection of a past phase or life. This concept is illustrated by the Christian concept of Judgment Day, when the dead come to life, resurrection, at the moment an angel blows a trumpet. Recovery is a frequent word for this Rider Waite Tarot card in Tarot Verbatim™.
Five of Pentacles Dark Night of the Soul is a Roman Catholic concept about a phase in spiritual development that is, yes, miserable. In practical application, this card is about being stuck after hitting bottom – is about not seeing the light and not seeing the opportunity to escape because you are numb from deprivation. That is the meaning we use today.
Queen of Pentacles delivers support. Usually she represents the wife who backs her man’s best interest, takes care and nurtures her family. She stands for having the talent or ability – especially of handling money and keeping a business up. She represents your personal resources, your cache of talents and abilities that you can access. The illustration shows fertility (the bunny, the vegetation).

Page of Cups Weird things that don’t make sense are very real-world. This Rider Waite Tarot card in Tarot Verbatim™ puts the text into question form or asks a question or casts doubt, and it stands for feeling silly or inadequate. It is one of what I call the ‘duh gear’ cards.

Each Tarot sentence is a literal-interpretation reading of the scenes pictured on the four cards you see. Only what each of the cards says – phrase by phrase – no fillers – no psychic ability used. The readings are about you and the people around you. They are about today and the days around it. Tarot, all by itself, talks to you. This is a demonstration of that .
Tarot will address any group flexibly, as it does here of ‘all the visitors.’ (It can address ‘all the people at work who have a say in my raise,’ for instance, without you knowing who or where those people are.)
Horoscopes are group readings too.
Astrology has to be based on someone else’s birth data, though, so it does not solidly apply to you just because of where the sun was when you were born. (Astrologers know this.)
Emily wants to know whether these sentences are more accurate for regular visitors than for people who have come only a few times. Would you help with a comment, if that is who you are? Please?
Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things, especially when the Spread has a card that means ‘no, never or not.’ That negative modifier can apply to any one of the cards.
Without a question also the pronouns (you, him, her, me, us, them, they, etc.) in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. Notice how, as much as possible, we drop pronouns, which makes for some awkward phrasing.
The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information! In a ‘real’ reading, the parties are identified (including the gender of the questioner!), and so is the time frame if there is one. In this group reading, we cannot do that, so we have variety.

We have: being the black sheep (Five of Pentacles) and being very moral (Hierophant) or being the ‘good family’ the black sheep returns to (Four of Wands). So Four of Wands and Hierophant are both ‘upstanding.’
We have a decrepit house (Five of Pentacles) and a house ‘up to code’ (Hierophant).
And all of these opposites are, of course, accompanied by ‘a change of circumstances’ in Judgment.
Overall, the message is: people recover from bad times, with family.
LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES
Five of Pentacles Bums on the street, no home, no hope, no clothes against the cold, still walking, crippled in a snowstorm at night. Desperate and down, hard t imes, misery, missing and being lonely. Being so numbed by despair you cannot see the warm church which would feed you and bed you down for the night. Mother and son are together in this.
Four of Wands is uptown. The wedding of scions of their society is a public affair. This is the fine house that people who are powerful and have money inhabit. Four of Wands evokes public buildings as well as spouse, marriage, family, respectability and being in the good category.
Judgment A sudden change, especially a change back to a former condition, especially a former condition that was more desirable – as in restore, recover, revive, new life. The angel on Judgment Day wakes the dead with his big announcement on the horn, and they return to life.
Hierophant The official (propaganda) story, the ‘face’ we put on and the ‘face’ public institutions put on, of respectability and normalcy. Behaving oneself, being moral, the physical aspect of things, the usual or same-old-thing. Religion, religious, church (anything), ceremony, official standing or title or state – as in a marriage on paper.

Each Tarot sentence is a literal-interpretation reading of the scenes pictured on the four cards you see. Only what each of the cards says – phrase by phrase – no fillers – no psychic ability used. The readings are about you and the people around you. They are about today and the days around it. Tarot, all by itself, talks to you. This is a demonstration of that .
Tarot will address any group flexibly, as it does here of ‘all the visitors.’ (It can address ’all the people at work who have a say in my raise,’ for instance, without you knowing who or where those people are.)
Horoscopes are group readings too.
Astrology has to be based on someone else’s birth data, though, so it does not solidly apply to you just because of where the sun was when you were born. (Astrologers know this.)
Emily wants to know whether these sentences are more accurate for regular visitors than for people who have come only a few times. Would you help with a comment, if that is who you are? Please?
Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things, especially when the Spread has a card that means ‘no, never or not.’ That negative modifier can apply to any one of the cards.
Without a question also the pronouns (you, him, her, me, us, them, they, etc.) in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. Notice how, as much as possible, we drop pronouns, which makes for some awkward phrasing.
The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information! In a ‘real’ reading, the parties are identified (including the gender of the questioner!), and so is the time frame if there is one. In this group reading, we cannot do that, so we have variety.

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT CARDS
Knight of Swords shows a fully armed knight leaning over the rushing horse’s neck, arm extended, cloth and mane whipped in the wind. His expression is intense in pursuit. But the Rider Waite Tarot card can also mean fleeing as well as going back and switching directions back and forth. It suggests a strike sometimes as well.
Five of Pentacles Depleted, exhausted, lacking what you need, numb with despair and homeless or bankrupt: Poor times, this Rider Waite Tarot card screams. A mother and wounded, crippled child in rags pass on foot by a cathedral where a hot meal and warm bed await – because they are so tired it doesn’t register as shelter!
Page of Cups Silly, inappropriate, awkward, strange or weird, foolish, see things differently, foolhardy: That is the fellow wearing women’s clothing and carrying around a fish in a cup. This can mean inspiration just as Hanged Man can. It suggests putting the sentence in question form, and also humor at times.
Hanged Man most often means ‘realize’ or ‘realization.’ An idea, concept, inspiration, eureka experience, “Get it” or understand, intense experience, intense awareness … to know. Telepathy or psychic experience. The Illustration depicts how ‘upside-down’ you feel when you suddenly realize something – maybe ‘something you knew already.’

Two of these cards refer to a good future: Judgment and Two of Wands. Judgment means revival, recovery, rebirth, new era new phase – new anything that’s good. Two of Wands means the outlook is very secure, very stable, financially too. The Four of Swords means to be dormant, lie down or sleep – and here, ‘bedridden’ because the Five of Pentacles is being in really bad shape. So obviously we are talking about going from poor times to good times financially and health-wise.
Advice? Well, ‘Take up thy bed and walk.’ Since we say good times are coming, be looking for the shadow!

Four of Swords: To stay the same or be used to, to do nothing or not participate, to lie around. Same-old same old. Illustration is of the fellow lying on the coffin to meditate all night as part of the knighthood ritual.
Five of Pentacles: These desperate people in rags are so numb and sick, and it’s so cold, they trudge past the warm church where they would get a meal. Oh, yeah, poor times.
Two of Wands: Outlook is excellent. Stability. Security. The illustration of someone who ‘got the whole world in his hands.’
Judgment: Judgment means revival, recovery, rebirth, new, era new phase – new anything that’s good. It also means a big announcement, news.

The money you lost is coming back in a breakthrough.
He has money, that he would have lost, to spend from his income when he is divorced.
Money he pays in the divorce devastates him but his ships are coming in.
So miserable that when money comes in he/she spends it on a divorce.
Through all the disasters, there was still enough money to pay the bills.
There is going to be a breakthrough as hitting bottom pays off.
Dead broke, and you get your hands on money; bankrupt and money comes in.
Money from a lawsuit about being injured, money from the wreck/disaster.
Money comes in to pay the bills when he/she is broke from being incapacitated.
Well, the Ten of Swords and the Tower are both disasters, and the Six of Pentacles and the Three of Wands are both money coming in. Tower can be a breakthrough as well as a divorce. Ten of Swords can mean ‘to lose’ or ‘lost.’
Advice is to appraise how not having money either causes, has caused or will cause ‘having the money’ to happen. A ghetto inspires ambition. Losing one kind of life forces another to replace it. Whatever.
As with our previous spread today, hitting bottom brings financial well-being. (The first today spread applies equally to money and to health; this one is not that general.)

Ten of Swords: Now, if there is one card I would not like to exemplify, it’s this one: down for the count, knife in the back – the illustration in Rider Waite says it all. Pamela Coleman Smith expresses the idea so well here.
Six of Pentacles: Money is paid. Money is spent and received in a transaction. Paycheck. Illustration shows a well-dressed employer paying his raggedy workers exactly what he owes them. They are not union workers.
Three of Wands: Good things are coming. Money is coming in. It’s on its way. The picture on this card speaks of ‘Ships coming in’ rather obviously.
Tower: This is not good! A breakthrough is one of its few appetizing meanings. The illustration refers to the overthrow of the Tower of Babel. Disaster, divorce …
