Knight of Pentacles and Hanged Man are both about awareness. Knight of Pentacles is a bit of a ruffian who is obsessive about one thing, whereas Hanged Man has acres of open mind waiting for landings of unidentified craft. Knight of Pentacles has bought into some issue ‘lock, stock and barrel’ whereas Hanged Man is still tuning in to the whole subject. Knight of Pentacles is the fanatic, is self-interested and driven. Could be a sports fan. Hanged Man is often philosophically inclined.

Four of Wands and Four of CupsThe next two cards taken together mean people (Four of Wands) aren’t interested (Four of Cups), want nothing to do with it. Of course, they also read ‘people you want nothing to do with.’ Four of Wands is a group of people who have a group consciousness, a ‘we’ feeling about whatever their affiliations are, especially people who consider themselves the cream of their society or superior in some way – you know, one group has the right flavor, right lifestyle, or right God and gets to look down on those other ones that don’t believe the same way, and so on. And Four of Cups is rejecting no matter how many times it comes up – is totally not interested, rejected and/or rejecting.

Knight of Pentacles     One thing he is sure of. One thing on his mind. He is mindful. He has priorities. He is zeroing in. He is persistent. He has energy, and is usually a physical type, even a tough guy type. He is adamant. He has to. The individualist’s ambition and drive. Yes, the pioneer; and pioneers don’t belong on the assembly line. Obsessive? Sports fan? The guy who wants you to use his brand, from beer to belief. He is the infomercial marketeer. And sometimes the street thug.

 

Four of Wands      Four of Wands is about ‘us’ and ‘them.’ Citizenship and belonging, people who are ‘family’ to one another in any way. It can be Establishment and it can be ‘the masses’ or ‘the people.’ The society wedding pictured in this Rider Waite Tarot card has a public aspect, an outdoor show. Its members could have a lot in common with Knight of Pentacles, the True Believer in … anything. Four of Wands is the tribe, from the neighborhood to nations and international entities. It’s pretty much a mindset shared by people who identify with one another as members of it.

 

Four of Cups Today Four of Cups is ‘not a member,’ doesn’t have the same ideas, doesn’t want to be . Doesn’t want to divulge. He renounces, he does not join, is not a member of this family, ‘I’m not one of them.’ He isn’t your kind, is against this, and is blocked as an individual. ‘Everybody but me.’ He also stands for the ‘negatively’ of ‘negatively motivate.’ He is also being rejected by the folks; Tarot is almost always reversible in actions.

The illustration is saying ‘I don’t drink’ to whatever beverage is offered. Not going to. Reject. What part of ‘No’ don’t you understand?

 

Hanged Man often translates ‘realize’ or ‘aware.’ Today is his day to shine: He, consciousness, is our subject. So today he is about the pursuit of higher consciousness, psychic impressions, sensing something, having a feeling or gut (visceral) instinct about something. Intuits and intuition. Instinctive perceptions. Hanged Man is an open mind that operates as a vacuum today.

The illustration reflects several ancient stories of heroes or gods who hanged themselves on trees in order to be enlightened. It reflects how we feel … upside-down with our hair on fire … when a totally new interpretation or perspective hits us in whole cloth.

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS:  OBSERVATION OF THE SPREAD

Hmmm, said I when I saw these. That’s a polite rendition. Two of the four Rider Waite Tarot citizens are about idea or inspiration or mind or focus or awareness. Those are Hanged Man and Knight of Pentacles. The former is subconscious realization producing a eureka awareness consciously. The latter is about one very conscious if not obsessive idea – is about focus.

Then Seven of Cups is many different scattered unrelated items together. It is about confusion and chaos … and smoke and debris and pieces of things lying around.

Add to these Knight of Sword’s sudden reversal of direction or changes – including changes back and forth.

So we have a contrast between scattered and focused, one and many. And we have a contrast between deliberation and focus in Knight of Pentacles and being out of control and scattered in Seven of Cups.

These four are a recipe for one’s head to spin. Missing is any action at all! This is one of those pesky consciousness spreads. I hate it when someone asks what another person will do and we get a consciousness spread meaning he’s gonna think.

 

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS:  INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT CARDS

Seven of Cups … uh-oh. Many different scattered unrelated items together. Seven of Cups is about confusion and chaos … and smoke and debris and pieces of things laying around. Theories and apparitions. Seven of Cups is the magician who lost control of the critters in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and is about the critters who got loose in Pandora’s Box. Its signature phrase is … out of control.

Hanged Man has realized he always knew that! Hanged Man is when you go around saying some aphorism to your friends as if it were very meaningful and they are rolling their eyes at you … Yeah? Hanged Man is when you realize that the friend who said “Well, he had sex with that nun” has a point after you told Friend the story of Husband’s knowing the nun stole the hotel towels, that he saw her put them in her luggage. Hanged Man is the kind of realization that sometimes is quickly followed by a “Duh!” Psychic realization is part of Hanged Man’s territory too.

 

Knight of Swords goes back there again … goes back and forth … turns the corner … changes – especially changes direction. He means to pursue and he means to flee. I wish it were not so. He means to be in a hurry and he means speed. His illustration shows a fully armed knight in obvious pursuit, blade extended and leaning forward. His horse’s hair is flying and his horse is flying – both feet off the ground, which is not the way horses run.

Knight of Pentacles He and his horse are short and dark. They are standing still as he contemplates that one thing in his hands (a huge coin). He can be a thug – is at least very physical. Concentrating on one thing is the main meaning.

This spread is an extra one for the weekend’s question about getting ahead. Advice regards the downside to the struggle to get ahead, mainly the scheming relatives who have an eye on your ship coming in. The advice is to be aware of this situation but to focus on making the best of it: ‘determine what good shall come of it.’ It speaks of ambition being fueled by those very underclass folks. A house in a good neighborhood that you must have a good income to buy is a motivation, too.

It talks of the driven or ambitious man, Knight of Pentacles, of income or good things coming, Three of Wands. Then it has intense awareness (Hanged Man) of people problems, Ten of Pentacles. Yes, here’s another Thematic Apperception Test: Arrange these pictures into a story. Both Knight of Pentacles and Hanged Man speak of awareness in Rider Waite Tarot. Knight of Pentacles is focused on one main thing or goal, while Hanged Man in intensely intuitively aware. MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT CARDS Knight of Pentacles is focused on one thing, even obsessively. He is ambitious, even driven. His stereotype is that of a short dark fella who is very physical, tough even – who has one thing in mind and he’s gonna see to it that something gets done or not done, whatever he has in his mind. Three of Wands has good prospects, is waiting for his ships to come in and they are in sight. That is the illustration on the Rider Waite Tarot. It’s about income quite often. Hanged Man is intensely aware, intuitively aware, senses, ‘smells,’ is psychically aware, realizes, an idea strikes him full-blown – the eureka experience, in which the subconscious kicks an idea into your head – boom! Ten of Pentacles births many phrases, but its general meaning is people problems. It is a house, too, and means a (dysfunctional) marriage. It can mean the gentry or the underclass, often has the idea of a quarrel, feud or scheme. It can be any group of people – again with a negative spin – such as the mob, a gang, corrupt social system, politicians.
