Knight of Swords – Like Two of Pentacles, Knight of Swords is all sorts of movement. Off we go, and here we come! Its main characteristic is speed: fast movement. Knight of Swords means back and forth movement, and means turning around – a turnaround or change of direction or return to where (it) was. This should remind you of our Two of Pentacles friend, who is more ‘going ’round and ’round’ but also means back and forth. Knight of Swords is switching directions, and actually often means ‘change.’ It means going back to; it means going to; it means getting away from. And usually it’s not hard to see which it is, believe it or not.

Related words and phrases for all this fast movement are: get through, avoid, keep from, not anymore, hurry and rush and speed, again, and odd phrases like ‘in no time,’ which are at least partly slang.

Knight of Swords is one of the many cards that mean any one of these: suddenly, again, avoid, outta here.

Temperance – Temperance is an odd bird card, a Johnny-come-lately to the Tarot deck. It doesn’t join much in the ‘flow’ theme in spite of the water going back and forth, and it doesn’t join much in the ’emotion’ theme in spite of the water featured in the illustration. No, instead its meanings revolve around relationship (close relationship, buddies, partnership, intimacy) and also two-way conversation and responding. It often means deal and dealing and dealing with – transactions. Like Three of Pentacles, it can be about negotiating. Direct personal face-to-face interaction, or a hand-to-hand deal is Temperance’s beat.

You would think it would mean temperance as to alcohol use. It doesn’t, in my experience. You would think it would join in the angel theme. It very very seldom does in my experience: A vision of angels is invariably Judgment.

Sometimes Temperance means sharing as it does today. Keep an eye out for Temperance to be about healing, because the symbol on the angel’s chest means that.

Seven of Cups – The illustration shows an apprentice magician who is overwhelmed by the forces he called up and let loose. He is very much taken aback – is in shock as the spirits cavort. Seven of Cups is when things are out of control, when you ‘let the cat out of the bag.’ When you don’t know what to do next.

Seven of Cups is wild, crazy, mixed up, mindboggling, amazing, bizarre, is for no reason, is amazing, and is chaos itself. It means shock (in any sense).

This is the card for assorted items, for miscellanea, for a drawerful of junk, for making a mess and for the mess that is made. Seven of Cups is ‘the needle in the haystack.’ When things fall apart, fall through, break down, get garbled. Seven of Cups is your card.

Seven of Swords shows a cloud and means things are scattered about, so this is your card to tell about a hurricane, tornado, explosion, and the debris of a destructive event. It means ‘cloud’ literally, and it means ‘smoke’ literally as in ‘Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.’ The smoke can be any mist in the air.

Lastly, know that the covered cup, the one with the veil over it, represents hope. That’s because Seven of Cups is also Pandora’s box, a story in which the one good spirit is left locked up when the bad guys escape, and is released later to play catch-up.

On either side of a card, Temperance, that means ‘to deal with’ and ‘relationship’ is a card that means a sudden reversal or emergency, Knight of Swords, and a card that means things falling apart or chaos, Seven of Cups. So you can see unexpected disruption of a relationship or a deal.

There’s a back-and-forth theme in both Knight of Swords and Temperance. Knight of Swords is switching directions or running back and forth; Temperance describes ‘getting back to’ someone as communication, as responding, as dialog or two-way conversation.

Since Temperance is an intimate relationship or partnership, both the run-away and the hurry-back of Knight of Swords is about lovers coming and going, and Seven of Cups is a crazy-ass relationship, a relationship that falls apart or is out of control or shocking.

We have stories of change. We have ‘After all that, we are together again’ and we have ‘You zoom out of a relationship when it falls apart. We have ‘When I lose control, up comes my guardian angel to get me back on track’ and we have ‘Off I go into the wild and crazy scene with my buddy.’

Advice today is about angry edgy hotheaded impulsive changeable dudes whose dealings are enabled by a capable skilled female assistant who is loyal and who backs him. Meanwhile, he has a good relationship with his loyal wife who babies him too and supports him … supports both of him capably.

Now we have stories. Yay. Four Tarot citizens whose meanings are different from one another and whose meanings intersect flexibly, like this:

*Temperance is a relationship or deal, communication or negotiation, partners or intimate partners.

*Knight of Swords is to switch, to switch or go back and forth, to be in a hurry, to leave … or to pursue. Evoking the heat of battle, it kind of is in theme with King of Wands as the fired-up edgy macho man.

*Queen of Pentacles is the capable woman who manages money, backs and supports her man or husband. She can be possessive of her man, she may baby her man. She is talent, she is able and capable and loyal.

*And King of Wands is the husband card, and also the edgy, touchy, angry madman a/k/a redneck or Macho Man. He roars, he has a temper.

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT CARDS

Temperance you trust, you are close in a relationship or deal, communication or negotiation as partners or intimate partners. Temperance is ‘us,’ is ‘one hand washes the other.’ Its illustration does not much reflect these meanings, but these are the meanings that show up for it. Its illustration is a healing angel pouring water and wine together to dilute the wine – hence, its name. Bet you can guess this is one of those Tarot citizens added in the Middle Ages to make the deck sacrosanct. This is an expendable card.

Knight of Swords switches or goes back and forth, is in a hurry, leaves or pursues. It evokes the heat of battle. You see the knight in full armor leaning over his full-speed horse, weapon brandished. Here are the phrases he births in today’s messages:

Queen of Pentacles is the capable woman who manages money, backs and supports her man or husband. She can be possessive of her man, she may baby her man. She is talent, she is able and capable and loyal. We see her looking thoughtfully at the money she is holding. Symbols of fertility are around her (See the bunny?) so you get the idea of profit from this illustration. You get the idea of a capable woman, especially capable of managing and supporting a place.

King of Wands is the husband card, and also the edgy, touchy, angry madman a/k/a redneck or Macho Man. He roars, he has a temper. We all know him. Most of the time he is a harmless annoyance, sometimes he is the passionate husband or energetic hands-on working man. Today the other Rider Waite Tarot citizens emphasize his changeable nature, and he is in the capable hands of his able assistant Queen of Pentacles.

His illustration shows the redheaded fellow with one hand on his big stick, one hand in a fist, and that irritable look on his face.

Four Card Spreads, Our Daily Spread

HOW TO USE THE MATERIAL WE HAVE FOR YOU HERE. Read the sentences, and pick out the ones that seem to apply to you, to the people around you. They are a Tarot analysis of your day’s circumstances. As the day (or several days) unfolds, you may find the information is relevant. The question is: “Tell the visitors here something useful and meaningful to them.” Often, your adopting the attitude you feel in the blog works for your day!

Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean even contradictory things. Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are less specific, more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. Especially when a pronoun is in parentheses, feel free to substitute.

Seven of Pentacles – Knight of Swords – Lovers

Right off the bat, two of these four Rider Waite Tarot cards mean pretty much the same thing – intimate partners or close associates or a couple, even an angel:

(1) Lovers means the obvious ‘lovers,’ it means partners, being affiliated or being associates, a connection or contact, being on (someone’s) side – and can refer to protection. contacting and being in contact. Illustration shows a human pair with a guardian angel and the sun over them, and a volcano and the Garden of Eden snake in the fruit tree by the woman.

(2) Temperance shows an angel pouring liquid from one cup to another, and it means intimate partners, a couple, a close relationship, intimacy, association with or ‘being on the side of,’ direct dealing (hand to hand, say), reciprocal or reciprocate, a transaction or deal, and to transact that deal. It also means healing and an angel literally.

Next, both Temperance and Knight of Swords involve back and forth, in different ways. Temperance is a back-and-forth reciprocal deal, and Knight of Swords would mean ‘to get back with,’ to go back to or come back to, as well as to go back and forth.

The Knight of Swords shows pursuit in the heat of battle. It could be the cop on your tail on the highway. It means to run away in a hurry too, as well as to go back and forth. (I don’t make up Rider Waite Tarot’s verbatim meanings, just observe them and report on them.) The knight in question is in full armor, his clothes flying, his horse in full flight, his sword brandished, a fierce expression on his face. Phrases such as ‘get out while you can’ and ‘running back there’ and ‘returning,’ as well as putting a ‘re-‘ in front of any given term and ‘could go either way.’

Seven of Pentacles, the first Tarot citizen in our spread, is a ‘duh’ card (my classification!) Its main meaning is doubt about the outcome, or to ponder and puzzle over something. The grower is wondering whether he will get fruit from his cucumber plants, because both genders of plant are necessary for fruiting. (I always wonder if one shoe is supposed to be totally muddy and the other not, or whether the artist just ran out of a color, or whether there’s supposed to be some meaning in his shoes not matching.)
