Two of Wands – Three things that Two of Wands is associated with are: the future, money, security. Those headline meanings spread out to encompass some things you would not directly think of, though.
.
Here is ‘the man who owns the town.’ He has the world in his right hand: see that? He stands atop his castle and surveys his landholdings below, making plans to wrest more cash from them like the banker, landlord, and real estate mogul he is. So Two of Wands often involves a plan or planning.
.
The plans bring up the future. You find Two of Wands most often translating future tense – either putting future tense to another card’s verb, or adding words like: going to, will be, look forward to. Other common words along this line are: long term, permanent.
.
The fact he is nobility of the town brings in his financial security, his being the established solid citizen. This opens the door for Two of Wands to translate ‘a sure thing’ or ‘certainty.’ Things are under control in Two of Wands and the card says ‘under control’ fairly often.
.
Being town nobility brings Two of Wands words about security, especially financial security. Any word that means ‘secure’ or ‘stable’ (security, stability) is likely to call Two of Wands to your spread. That includes being a stable secure person, which further expands to being conservative. (Two of Wands is associated with ‘the Establishment,’ especially with Hierophant helping out.) So Two of Wands is associated with being in good shape, with things being under control.
.
Two of Wands is a bank account or pension or savings. It is the main card for investments. It can also be a mortgage, especially with another real estate card like Three of Pentacles.
.
Note that Two of Wands can translate ‘financial,’ can translate ‘security,’ and can also translate ‘financial security.’
Knight of Swords – Knight of Swords is a confusing card to apply; you tend to look at other cards first to see who it’s being in this spread, the same as you deal with people who don’t quite know who they are being today.
.
Two things Knight of Swords means are speed and change. That’s our Knight of Swords boy. He means: suddenly, hurry, quick and quickly, short term, instant, immediate, and fun phrases like ‘whiz by.’
.
There’s a line in Don Quixote that ‘He ran off in all directions.’ Think of this when you see Knight of Swords.
.
Knight of Swords usually means pursuit or pursuing, and you can see that is what the armored fellow is doing in our illustration: The heavy sword held aloft tells you that. But in real Tarot life this card will come up for fleeing, getting out, and leaving too. (Note that Knight of Wands has the same problem in reverse: His illustration is fleeing, but that card can also translate words and phrases that mean to pursue.)
.
And in addition to all that, Knight of Swords is all about reversal, turnaround (as in turn your life around, and as in a turnaround in the stock market), changes of direction, and switching. It even can translate ‘recovery.’
.
And just to add another contradiction, our pesky Knight of Swords in Tarot Verbatim™ can mean both ‘again’ and ‘not anymore.’ The ‘not anymore’ arises from his full speed reversal of direction. The ‘again’ arises from ‘going back there again.’
I disavow all responsibility for his contradictions: Meanings in Tarot Verbatim™ come from years and years of spreads that were answers to questions in which the answer was known.
Nine of Cups – Today Nine of Cups spreads its peacock tail. It usually means ‘to want’ and ‘to have or get what you want.’ Today, he does mean those most often, of course, but today he outdoes himself.
.
Nine of Cups is famous for ‘Your Wish is Granted.’ So it will say: happy, satisfied, fondest wish, what you dream of, being pleased, and having the best, having it all. Meanings that come directly out of these are words and phrases like: profit, payoff, enough, well-off, wealth, rich, and even ‘materialistic.’
.
Nine of Cups is mighty pleased with himself, but this card bends to include wanting to please and pleasing someone else – ‘pleasing you.’
.
Nine of Cups also means gratitude and gratification, and grateful.

GUIDANCE When I go all out for something I really want, whatever the pain or inconvenience it costs is worth it because the prize motivates me. The injury I endure in a marathon run is all about the pleasure of the run itself, too, not about getting from the starting point to the finish line itself: You could drive it! It’s because it is difficult that I want it.

.
Three of Swords – Don’t have to tell you Three of Swords is ‘a bad card,’ do I? Heartache, heart trouble, hurt, pain, cut with knives: those are immediately apparent. Keep in mind that the ‘cut or pierced with knives’ includes surgery, acupuncture, etc. Another off-label use for Three of Swords is bad weather: Once it helped indicate a tornado during a job interview. The storm clouds behind the drawing bring that in.
.
The ‘bad weather’ expands to include hostile atmospheres and whatever ‘goes against the grain to make life difficult: adversity. Along these lines, Three of Swords can mean damage, since, well, that heart is damaged.
.
The most common words for Three of Swords are these: divorce or separation; rejection (of anything, any way); quit or being fired; fight; hurt; pain; hurtful relationship; feelings of hurt and pain.
.
Three of Swords also translates ‘against,’ and that’s a theme with a number of Rider Waite Tarot cards in it. Three of Swords goes so far as to mean hate and spite, and someone who’s an ‘aginner,’ as my daddy used to put it. This ‘against’ category, in Three of Swords, extends to ‘contrarian,’ which is also a type of investing. Shorting a stock is rejecting it, Tarot thinks, so Three of Swords is the card for contrarian investing and shorting stocks.
.
Three of Swords seldom means loss, but today Nine of Cups brings that word to Three of Swords in the phrase ‘capitalizing on losses,’ which is really ‘making the best of adversity’ in different words.
.
Knight of Wands – His picture shows him getting away fast. His horse is rearing (indicating things are out of his control) and he has a scared look on his face. But in real Tarot life, this card (like Knight of Swords, its twin) can mean either leaving or pursuing.
.
The main meanings for Knight of Wands are about speed (fast, fast progress, quick, hurry) and leaving (get out of, left, move out, ducked out).
.
Those same meanings apply without the ‘fast.’ So Knight of Wands is simply getting ahead, is going through, is getting on with it, or is ‘getting going,’ or avoiding rather than fleeing, or just moving (as in being transferred or moving out of town, or even just being on the road). Keep in mind this is the card for ‘over the road transport,’ as in deliveries or truck drivers.
.
Knight of Wands also applies to ‘with great energy’ and to motivation, as well. And remember I said he can be rushing in, rather than out, or just on his way in, or on his way to.
.
Nine of Cups – And I don’t have to tell you Nine of Cups is ‘a good card.’ It’s as good a card as Three of Swords is a bad card. It’s as good a card as Wheel of Fortune. Nine of Cups is universally called ‘your wish is granted,’ and it means that in most decks – your dream come true. So Nine of Cups is your card for being rich, having it all, getting rich.
.
But Nine of Cups represents more minor satisfactions too (and ‘satisfaction’ is one of its favorite words, not used today). Watch for it to mean ‘enough,’ and to mean ‘gratitude.’ Watch for it to describe the way you feel when you receive the benefits (one of its words) it speaks of. These words are like: so glad, feel so good about it, makes you happy all over, enjoy and enjoying, the pleasure of; and watch for it to mean enjoy and enjoying.
.
Sometimes Nine of Cups just translates ‘want’ and its synonyms. Even then, there’s sometimes an implication that the ‘want’ will be satisfied. For example: ‘as (fill in the other card’s influence) as you want,’ and ‘brings you what you most want.’
.
There’s a profit motive to Nine of Cups too. Watch it say ‘is worth it’ and ‘capitalizing on,’ as well as speaking of making a profit.
.
P. S.: Nine of Cups is not only being pleased; it is wanting to please. (Not today though.)
.
.
.
.
LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES..
… .. ….. … .
.
Three of Swords is when everything goes against you. But its meaning extends to merely ‘difficult’ and hence to long shots, unfavorable or hostile environments, contrarian attitudes and approaches (‘no matter what’ situations), and to fighting for something or doing something the hard way. It even means bad (‘inclimate’) weather, and it even means to simply be against something, or to have hurt feelings. So don’t be ascared of Three of Swords!
.
Three of Swords obviously is for more real suffering too: hurting, pain, heart problems, surgery, litigation, and general adversity and difficulties.
.
Three of Swords is also a member of the hate, fights, quarrels, feuds, war, injury and wounds club of Tarot meanings. It is also the main card for getting fired or quitting, divorce, and spiteful snarly nasty people. Not to mention: the enemy.
.
Nine of Cups is as much a ‘good card’ as Three of Swords is a ‘bad card.’ At his worst, Nine of Cups is excess and greed, and the ‘I got mine’ attitude.
.
Nine of Cups is the feelgood card, like Star is. We (everybody, really) call this the ‘your wish is granted’ card. Your dream come true card. I did it my way, and things are going my way, and I got exactly what I want … card.
.
Nine of Cups is satisfied, is pleased. Nine of Cups also wants to please. Nine of Cups is glad, too. It translates ‘benefit’ and ‘pleasure,’ and ‘feel so good about it.’
.
Nine of Cups means ‘enough,’ means ‘plenty’ and means ‘excess.’ See the nine empties on the ledge behind the chubby grinning figure? Think of this continuum as enough liquor, plenty of liquor that makes you feel good all over, and an excess of liquor.
.
In the same continuum, Nine of Cups means having enough, doing well, and being rich or even too rich. Nine of cups is into money too. Besides the obvious being rich shown in the picture, Nine of Cups means ‘worth it,’ profit, to capitalize upon, the return on investment, money for yourself which would be net profit, and ‘gain.’ The concept you find in commerce and financial planning of *capitalizing on losses* is here in real personal life.
.
So we have on the left things being pretty painful and a loss; and we have on the right things being pretty great and a gain: total contrast. In the middle is a neutral sort of card, Knight of Wands, whose main meanings are to get on with things, to be motivated, to get out of something, to rush or hurry, to move on out or be transferred, to avoid, to pursue, to get ahead, to be on the road, or over-the-road travel, and to be gung-ho with great energy.
.
The contrast between the good feeling and satisfaction of Nine of Cups and the bad feeling and disappointment of Three of Swords is our story and our message for this post. We have these ‘The gain is worth the pain’ sentences – a lot of them, and there could have been more. Just a few examples of the contrast: So glad you shorted that fast-mover. Got out of heartache. Enjoying the benefit of having gone through the pain. Get out of a bad relationship for your dream to come true. Just enough pain to motivate. A divorce makes you happy. You get out of hell like you want to.

Am I more motivated to make things as I want them to be when they are difficult, or am I more motivated to pursue what’s best when conditions are favorable? Sometimes a setback gives me this ‘Come hell or high water, I’m gonna get where I’m going’ attitude. Sometimes a potential reward or profit is all it takes to get me going.

To get what you wish for and are entitled to, you have to pursue it
Justice
Ace of Swords, Knight of Wands, Nine of Cups
Romance Perspective:
Make him chase you to get the marriage you want.
He has to do what he should in a hurry to get his satisfaction.
He is motivated by desire to pursue the lady in the right ways, and win.
You gotta chase to get what you want and should have.
His first priority is chasing after her: He is entitled to the one he wants.
Pursues making it legal in order to have the good life.
Got to have what you want and are entitled to?: Go after it, chase.
Pursues with great energy the one he really wants, who is right for him.
Wants only what is right, is in hot pursuit of it.
Business/Other Perspectives:
To get what you wish for and are entitled to, you have to pursue it.
You have to do what you should and get moving, to be well off.
You have to get moving to get all you want – as it should be.
You will have to transfer to have the good life you are entitled to.
You will have to transfer to entitle yourself to the good life.
You will have to ‘go on the road’ to be entitled to a lot of money.
You should put all your energy into whatever you’ve got to have.
To get the law enforced the way you want, hurry, go to them.
He got all that money but is running from the police (from law enforcement).
Law enforcement wants to pursue this in a hurry.
You have to do it right to get what you want that fast.
The legal victory you want comes quickly.
He did what he had to to get rich quick legally.
Somebody who wants justice forces him to leave town in a hurry.
To make it right, you will want to move out of town.
You have to sue to get what you want: hurry up!
Hot pursuit by the police, they want to use force/weapons.
He loves to speed and defy the police.
Guaranteed to get what you want when you go after it the right way.
Here is advice to strike while the iron is hot, advice to take advantage of opportunity, to seize the day.
What you really, really want is at hand, under your nose, so reach out and grab onto it. ‘Justice’ says you should and you gotta do this. So, keep your eye peeled for that happy circumstance. From my typing fingers to the ear of God’s executive secretary, the one who keeps his appointment book.
These four Tarot cards have disparate (different from one another) meanings, so the stories they can make are many, and the phrases that arise from pairs of them are diverse and many as well. I guarantee you you can find some I didn’t by taking the phrases arising from single cards and recombining them … which is what Tarot Verbatim is all about.
The four concepts which/who appear here are, in order of appearance: You have to/force or enforce (Ace of Swords), pursue/chase (Knight of Wands), get what you want/to desire (Nine of Cups) and Justice/should/entitlement (Justice). Phrases such as ‘you have to pursue,’ (Ace of Swords with Knight of Wands), ‘law enforcement,’ (Ace of Swords with Justice), ‘pursue what you want’ (Knight of Wands with Nine of Cups), ‘the good life you deserve,’ (Nine of Cups with Justice) arise from these combinations.
Meanings and Illustrations:
Ace of Swords: This Rider Waite Tarot card shows a hand with a weapon in it, a crown of victory over the sword tip. It means phrases like: make him/it/etc., have/has to, got to, win, victory, the one, only, force/weapons, enforced, enforcement, forces him, guaranteed, even ‘certain’ or sure thing.
Knight of Wands: The picture shows a partially-armored fellow brandishing his weapon (a club) as he rides fast through desolate terrain, suggesting going from one town to another. It calls for words such as chase, hurry, pursue/pursue/with great energy/hot pursuit, get moving, move or transfer to another town, running from, fast, comes quickly/quick, leave town in a hurry, hurry up, speed, and go after it.
Nine of Cups: He done et tha’ whole thang. The picture shows a fat rich man who ate and drank to excess and is glad to have done so. It is one of the simple cards with few and reliable meanings that you can use as an anchor card when you put down your spread and are initially figuring out what it is talking about. Phrases it raises are get the __ you want/get what you want, satisfaction, what you desire, the good life, what you wish for, to be well off, a lot of money, you’ve got to have, got all that money, get rich and loves to. Pretty simple, huh?
Justice: I want this card in a stained glass window! Anyone? A sword in one hand and the scales of justice in the other? – I can relate to that. You? Another simple card with few phrases, mainly: should, in the right way, entitled, right, legally, as it should be, law legal, justice, sue and police. It is a weak marriage card.
Don’t let anything rock your world!
World
Queen of Swords, Eight of Pentacles, Seven of Wands
Business Perspective:
No harm comes of you being confronted at work with something you are not comfortable with.
You push yourself to do this work, feeling like complaining … but you act like it doesn’t get to you.
Just put a bubble around yourself and do your routine: Some mouthy dude is going to annoy you.
You ignore a bitch at work who is sooo pushy.
He keeps trying to ‘get to you,’ to make you mad, but ‘you don’t know him.’
Well, there is no romance here! None, nada. That is because the first spread tells you about luv, up there. This one is pretty straightforward. It tells you to keep your cool under pressure, mostly at work, of someone who is very annoying and trying to get a rise out of you. Advice is to act like he isn’t doing that and he isn’t even there.
Meanings and Illustrations:
Queen of Swords: It isn’t fair. She isn’t getting what she deserves, what is fair. As a matter of fact, she is a bitch perhaps, and/or she is pissed perhaps. I like to put “Now would be good” regarding her outstretched hand, the other hand having the weapon at the ready. Today, she is being purposefully annoyed by some fellow who wants to rattle her cage.
Eight of Pentacles: Well, he is working, he is making one of those carvings after another with his hammer and chisel. He is into the groove of his routine, right there in between two Rider Waite Tarot cards that say ‘aggravation and pressure.’
Seven of Wands: Oh, God, spare me! Here come the hypermouth, the pushy s.o.b., the mouthy adolescent, the dude on his soapbox, the disruptor of the peace. He accuses. He wants the keys to the car and he isn’t about to buy the gas. He intends to annoy and anger you or he is not a happy camper.
World: This is advice to put your defenses up and to blithely ignore whatever bad juju the environment offers today. You are the superior person, you do not lower yourself to interact with the ruffian who aims to rock the boat this morning. The World card screams “Don’t let it get to you!” It shows a figure with two wands (“Master of Both Worlds” in occult circles.) who is dancing to her own drummer as a bunch of jokers want to intrude … but she has shut them out, she doesn’t know them.
