.……..………. Centered in our spread today is the energetic pursuit, is moving on up, speeding. That’s Knight of Wands. To the left of all this investment of energy is, well, doing it, and working on it, and the job or employment itself. To the right is the private enjoyment of home life where nothing intrudes, and ownership, including owning the turf you occupy. That is one of our favorite cards, Nine of Pentacles. These three Rider Waite Tarot cards get together to say ‘Engagement.’ They say ‘Get involved. Pursue your ambition at work, and pursue your ambition at home.’ They also picture the accomplishment, the achievement of having that work and home life of your desire – because Nine of Pentacles means both home and business.
…………………….Eight of Pentacles is all about work and work-related topics, and all about what you (or whoever) are doing, hands-on, step by step, in the real world, over and over again (habitually, repetitively, what you always do). It can also get roped into being one of those ‘in progress’ cards too, though. But Eight of Pentacles is plain, plebeian, ordinary workaday reality at heart, and is just that most of the time. Yes, it can be about a person who is workaday, ordinary and plain too, a working person of that sort. What do we expect of a picture of a carpenter banging out one identical object after the other at his work bench?
…………………….Knight of Wands is in a hurry, moving on out, moving to another place (even getting out of Dodge), and is a great expenditure of energy, usually in the pursuit of a goal. It’s easy to remember this, looking at him struggling to get his horse’s feet back on the ground as he races someplace. When you find Knight of Wands next to a girl card, it often is a fellow pursuing that type of girl. But he can also be running away from her, so, look twice. Knight of Wands is also on the road (one of several cards that mean that) and is associated with driving fast. This is one of the cards about commuting.
……………………Nine of Pentacles has made a science of minding her own business, and she does it so well she is business-minded. This is the lead card for working at home because Nine of Pentacles is at ease in her vineyard (obviously a home-based job) and because Nine of Pentacles has *a good life of her own making* and knows how to possess and enjoy it. Although she is the picture of wealth here – the vineyard and the expensive hobby of falconry – Nine of Pentacles’ focus is on being content with the life you do have, and choosing to be where you are. Nine of Pentacles reminds me of something Buddha is supposed to have said: ‘There are two ways to have everything you want. One is to go out and posses each thing. The other is to want only what you possess already.’
Nine of Pentacles and Eight of Pentacles is her working at home; her being a manager or having a niche of her own at work; an independent worker; and she isn’t the one who is hands-on but is a manager or supervisor. It can also suggest she is at home from work, or isn’t working but staying home.
The life you want is attainable if you put gung-ho energy into doing what it takes to get there and to stay there. Moving fast usually involves leaving some things behind, which suggests that the pursuit of the good life involves sorting out what doesn’t belong in it. Get engaged. Knight of Wands………….Knight of Wands goes well with Eight of Pentacles, saying ‘Keep working and you get ahead’ because Knight of Wands is movin’ on out and movin’ on up – getting ahead – and Eight of Pentacles is working.
