……………………… Lovers is about contact and connection – unity, even. Knight of Cups is about friendship, affection, making the first move or taking initiative – and is about offer and acceptance. But Nine of Wands is feeling very apprehensive about all this friendly contact, sweating it out. Nine of Wands’ nervousness colors the other cards, put them under a, shall we say, cloud of suspicion.
………………………….. Nine of Wands is sweating it out but hanging in there, standing his ground. Pictured is a border guard whose head wound is still unhealed from the last skirmish, who is still on guard duty, anxious about another assault. Nine of Wands is you hanging in there, sweating it out, even though you have been hurt. This is the card for harassment. The under-pressure uneasy dread he feels is the central meaning to apply when Nine of Wands shows up. Nine of Wands is about harassment, being on the defensive, being accused, and putting up with. It can reflect headache or other head problems, physical ones.

Love relationships and making contact are the main ones we use today – being together, having a bond of affection, and Knight of Cups adds reaching out to those meanings of Lovers. Knight of Cups is a natural paired with Lovers: He is Boyfriend, and Lovers is love relationships. He is also about an offer, and Lovers is about partnership, so these two cards can say someone is being offered, or is offering, a partnership. He is also a helper – he offers help. Today, he offers you help when you are in a tight spot (Nine of Wands) – or you are offering someone in a tight spot your help.
Knight of Cups and Nine of Wands are those awkward or even tense moments regarding the expression of affection … like … who blinks first and says ‘I love you’ or makes the first move.

LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

Nine of Wands.………. Nine of Wands reflects being under pressure, apprehension, nervousness, even dread. That fearful but brave feeling is the signature, the core meaning, of Nine of Wands. It is being on the defensive about real or potential confrontation. It is what gives you a tight gut; it is being in a tight spot. It is hanging in there and standing your ground despite harassment or accusations. It is what you wait so anxiously for, and what you have been putting up with. Pictured is a wounded border guard who is still on duty, hanging in there in spite of well-founded fear. They have already done him damage, and he expects them back for another onslaught.
Nine of Wands is also about headache, physical wounds or damage to the head or brain. It also shows up for guards and guard duty, and for the phrase ‘my watch’ once in a while. It can be about soldiers too.

Lovers…………. Lovers is ‘us’ and ‘we’ and even ‘them’ and ‘they.’ Lovers is a couple, or is any two people who are associated or are together in some way – partners, ‘in this together’ or even just propinquity – standing next to one another. Lovers is being on the same side. Four Card Spreads, Our Daily Spread
Advice is about some types of close friendships and relationships that make us uneasy, and some times that close friendships and relationships make us uneasy. A buddy gets on our nerves. Being anxious about being close for different reasons. Having to be more of a friend to someone, because of circumstances, than we really feel. We have all been these places, and here they are delineated. One wonders why.

Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things especially when the Spread has a card that negates other cards. Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information!

Both Page of Swords and Nine of Wands are about anxiety, apprehension, edgy uncomfortable feelings. Both Temperance and Knight of Cups are about intimacy. Knight of Cups is the friendly relaxed fella who is everyone’s friend, who makes the first move to shake hands. Temperance is the close or intimate relationship, and it means to deal one-on-one with someone. So this spread will be talking twice about uncomfortable friendship, different flavors of that.
