GUIDANCE      It doesn’t matter whether I get what I want or do without it. I know people who don’t care about the good life they have because they aren’t getting something they want. And I know people who don’t know what they want, so they aren’t getting it. But that’s not me. Having it all, or not having it all – Why worry? I just want to be free.

Could This Be YOU?

Picture this: You look at the cards in your spread

You immediately get an idea

because you know a few of them intimately AND

QUEEN OF SWORDS NINE OF CUPS

A victim just wants to be free.

Satisfying the demand? – no sweat!

Demanding greedy people: Ignore them!

Feel like griping but I want to be lighthearted.

Bitches get whatever they want, somehow or other.

All the nice things she never had, and it doesn’t matter.

When you ignore her, she gets what she wants by whining.

She has everything her heart desires; she makes no demand.

Why that critical woman is so pleased with me, I have no idea.

This demanding dame is exactly what he craves – who’d a thunk it?

.

Tarot Readings: Queen of Swords and Fool

QUEEN OF SWORDS FOOL

I like it like this: No complaints.

My squeaky wheel isn’t getting any oil.

She raises a fuss, and nothing pleases her.

Having no one to nag me, that’s all I want.

Her standards are so high, there’s no pleasing her.

To hell with feeling deprived, enjoy whatever you have.

When you demand what you want, forget about getting it.

No idea how demanding she is when she wants something.

Not getting what she wants, she doesn’t care about what she has.

You don’t have what you want since you don’t know what you want.

.

Tarot Readings: Nine of Cups and Fool

NINE OF CUPS FOOL

Ignore the greedy bitch.

Want you to quitcherbitchin.

He just wants to be free of the ex.

His dream is to be free of his mama.

No more do I want what I was craving.

I want not to be where someone is whining.

Don’t know what I want so I’m not getting it.

Not having it all, or having it all – why worry?

You feel so happy when she isn’t criticizing you.

Don’t know why I please her whenever she is mad with me.

.

Queen of Swords – Tarot is a female chauvinist sow: Queen of Swords is the lone negative female card in Tarot Verbatim™. So she has to cover a lot of ground. So there’s more of a spectrum to our Queen of Swords dame. First of all, even though this is the bitch card, the Mama-bat card, the ex-wife/girlfriend card, the nag, the snarly matriarch, and so forth, Queen of Swords is also the strong woman, the woman whose standards are higher than, and is even one of the ‘woman who won’t put up with’ Tarot cards in Tarot Verbatim™. If you think about it, women who have high standards and ‘won’t put up with’ are often considered bitches. (Raise your hand.)

.

What to look for in the illustration to support these meanings: See the face of the baby carved into her stone throne? That represents her dead child whom she is mourning. Queen of Swords is also the widow of the deck, and I think this goes beyond Tarot Verbatim™. One of my students called her ‘the bitter bitch,’ which is catchy, and might help you remember her concepts.

.

Today words along the ‘bitter bitch’ line are: feel like griping; by whining; that critical woman; complains, criticizes, squeaky wheel, nag, mad with me, raises a fuss.

.

So remember Queen of Swords as someone to whom (1) life has been unfair and she is deprived or (2) the whiny martyr type who thinks the world has shortchanged her, and is stuck on feeling deprived. This extends – sometimes – further to the person who feels ‘Somebody’s got to pay my bills.’ Frustrated entitlement can be a hallmark of Queen of Swords in some stories.

.

Another groove Queen of Swords women are found in is: demanding. Not getting what she wands or needs, maybe just ‘not having it all’ and feeling entitled. She craves something and is unsatisfied about it. (And today here’s Nine of Cups by her side, who can also crave.)

.

Have to keep in mind this card covers both the assertive … even overly assertive … woman and also the put-upon victim woman.

Nine of Cups – Technically, the ‘wish is granted’ Tarot card. Reality, about half the time it will translate ‘wants’ in some way. You find it representing wanting what a person doesn’t have (or doesn’t have yet). It’s about enjoying what you have; it’s about what you want and crave; it’s about having it all. It’s mainly about satisfaction … feeling safunsified. Once in a while Nine of Cups is your heart’s desire, your dream come true. Once in a while it’s about ‘whatever Lola wants.’

.

Here are the words for the satisfaction theme: satisfying; I like it like this; is getting oil; having it all; enjoy whatever you have; what she has, feel so happy, all the nice things.

.

Nine of Cups is to please and to be pleased. He wants to please you; you want to please him.

.

The shadow side of having what you want is being greedy, and you find that here too – usually with encouragement from another card.

Fool – You set the scales back to zero and they aren’t weighing anything. Think of Fool that way.

.

Fool is free, and Fool is to be free of. ‘To be free of’ gets expressed in words and phrases that usually imply the negative side of ‘not having.’ Fool is the absence of a trait, the absence of anything at all: Fool is not being present. One way I think of Fool is ‘water off a duck’s back.’ I don’t know, I don’t care, that’s not me, and I have no pony in this race. Today Fool translates words like this more than usual, being the opposite of Nine of Cups in the spread: no; I have no idea; isn’t any; nothing; having no one; there’s no; no idea; no more do I; not to be where; when she isn’t.

.

As the nascent stage because it is Zero, Fool is a blank slate, a blank state of not knowing. So ‘don’t know’ and ‘forget’ are very frequent translates for this Fool card. Here are the words today for that: don’t know, who’d a thunk it?, forget about, since you don’t know, don’t know why.

.

Water off a duck’s back.’ Fool is oblivious; Fool ignores. Here are the words that express this category of Fool: ignore them!; it doesn’t matter; when you ignore her; to hell with; ignore; she doesn’t care about.

.

In his snapshot in our illustration, Fool hasn’t a care in the world: He is lighthearted. He is living ‘out there’ and some other power is taking care of his ‘down here’ aspects somehow or another. So he traipses within inches of the edge of a cliff. Fool is “What, me worry?” Today it translates: why worry?; quitcherbitchin’; somehow or other; lighthearted.

…………..…………. …………………….

.

These three cards are about wanting, having, not wanting, and not having: a study.

.

Queen of Swords isn’t getting what she wants, and Nine of Cups definitely is getting what he wants. Fool isn’t paying attention and doesn’t care. (Fool is above it all – lives ‘out there’ and assumes Somebody is taking care of him. (Fools and drunks). And Somebody does. It works that way for some people (but do not try this at home). The underlying idea is that when a person is attuned to his spiritual life, the physical realities pale.

.

Both Queen of Swords and Nine of Cups can involve craving, but from very different perspectives. Queen of Swords craves what she doesn’t have and is, or feels, deprived of. Nine of Cups’ cravings are all assuaged and satisfied – maybe because Nine of Cups listened to Buddha say one way to have everything you want is to want only what you already have. Fool, on the other hand, is unfamiliar with the concept … never thought of wanting a particular thing, just plays it as it lays.

.

Queen of Swords and Nine of Cups come from very different attitudes. Nine of Cups is gratitude, and is enjoyment. (Notice, he drinks!) Queen of Swords is the stereotypical disgruntled dame that people say ‘There’s no pleasing her.’ (Of course the card represents other types too.)

.

Well, Queen of Swords can be the demanding wench, and Nine of Cups can be greedy. These are the shadow sides of these two Tarot cards, of course. Ever notice how some marriages are constructed along these lines?

.

We cover another aspect of ‘what you want’ here – and Fool is the one who brings up the subject: want to be free of something or someone. The gift of freedom usually does start within. These three cards taken together scream: Being free of this bitch (or my ex) is all I want.

.

Nine of Cups and Fool say ‘want (Nine of Cups) no part of this (Fool)’ and even ‘I want to not be here’ or, paraphrased, ‘I want to quit.’ And of course in our spread here, what they want no part of is Queen of Swords.

.

All the nice things she never had, and it doesn’t matter.” That’s another of the many aspects of wanting, having, not wanting, and not having that these particular three cards weave together. I have known lovely people like that, and I think they go to the front of the line at the entrance to the pearly gate.

DAILY MESSAGE TAROT ANALYSIS

Tell the visitors here something useful and meaningful to them.

.

Romantic Perspective

She assumes she is getting the loving relationship she expects.

He is in love with this demanding lady instinctively delivering the sweetness she expects.

He’s just a really sweet kid having a relationship with such a bitch.

For no reason at all,  whenever she is mad with him,  he does his part so sweetly.

She has no idea she is in a triangle relationship,  she would be mad.

She does not care whether she gets any flowers,  she wants him to pay the mortgage.

He has no idea she is irritated with him,  he assumes he is doing his part sweetly.

Oh,  whatever it is she wants and isn’t getting,  give her flowers and that’s doing your part.

As far as she is concerned,  he is there to cater to her needs in this relationship,  that’s all.

She’s just having a cranky day,  that’s all:  Our relationship is storybook.

She wants children,  all he wants is a relationship.

She has no idea of having children in this relationship.

Business Perspective

It’s a deal:  (We) just gave them their demand.

A meeting about the child’s case:  They have no theory.  The mother is stressed.

Doing business is a breeze:  You give demanding people good service.

Forget about getting the asking price on the contract on the old house.

She is mad about his meeting with the old flame,  and he is oblivious to that.

Children Perspective

She has nice children because she is a mean mama.  They just do what is expected,  and don’t know any better.

She disciplines the children so lovingly they do their part without even thinking about it.

Mama thought we had a deal on a grandchild.

You may as well give the grumpy old lady what she thinks is her fair share.

Your old mama assumes you still have the relationship you did when you were a kid.

When we get together with the mother-in-law she acts as if (he) is still her little kid.

Your kids annoy her,  so she ignores them and transacts just with you.

The settlement is for the children,  they ignore the adult woman’s complaint.

Friendship Perspective

They meet as old friends and don’t care about her criticism.

The old lady has been friends such a long time she is oblivious to what’s fair.

I guess it’s fair enough to give an dear friend what she is expecting.

Friends don’t even think of whether an exchange is fair or not and feel shortchanged!

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS:  OBSERVATION OF THE SPREAD

An exchange (even a contract or business deal) is the way we start.  Three of Pentacles.  Then we have giving generously,  affectionately,  Six of Cups –  an old friend and sweetness.  Then we have being oblivious or not keeping track,  just … Fool.  Then the critical grumpy shortchanged demanding mother-in-law,  mama or old woman who is keeping track.  So it’s all about an exchange.

Youth is in both Six of Cups and Fool.  An exchange is in both Three of Pentacles and Six of Cups.

,

,

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS:  INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT CARDS

Three of Pentacles     It’s a deal,  it’s a relationship in which each party does his fair share.  It’s a settlement.  It’s final payment as agreed.  It’s a contract.  It’s a meeting,  almost always of three people.  We put our heads together.  Our illustration shows the architect demonstrating to the clients that the building meets the blueprints,  to qualify for his payoff.

Six of Cups We have a friendly exchange.  A sweet relationship as of old friends in an old-fashioned way.  Giving sweetly and generously out of the heart.  Photo of Little Boy giving Little Girl flowers.  The good old days hauntingly.

Fool

Fool  So who’s keeping track –  not me,  I don’t care.  Just let it be.  Don’t even think about it.  Assume.  May as well be oblivious,  having no idea like a free-spirited youth.  Just for no reason at all instinctually.  What, me worry? –  I am just skipping along by the cliff with my trusty equally playful and oblivious puppy,  and all will be well.

Queen of Swords  Here’s who’s keeping track.  The old lady is dissatisfied and grumpy about being slighted and shortchanged here.  She demands things be rectified and she get what’s rightfully hers,  or what she thinks is rightfully hers … now would be good.  There’s the righteous old lady with her hand out and that Nurse Ratchett look on her face.  She is the bitch card,  the mother,  the mother-in-law,  the plaintiff or complainant.  She is you when you are righteously indignant.

=========================================================================

Is this the first time you come here? Well …

HOW TO USE THE MATERIAL WE HAVE FOR YOU HERE. Read the sentences, the TAROT ANALYSIS, and pick out the ones that seem to apply to you, to the people around you. They are a Tarot analysis of your day’s circumstances. As the day (or several days) unfolds, you may find the information is relevant. Some of this information refers to a longer time period. The question is: “Tell the visitors here something useful and meaningful to them.” Often, your adopting the attitude you feel in the blog works for your day! Some days are ‘keep an eye open’ and some are ‘green lights.’

Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean even contradictory things. Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are less specific, more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. Especially when a pronoun is in parentheses, feel free to substitute.

The Advice section sums up a general meaning of all the sentences. It is the favorite of most of us.

Fool

Emperor

Queen of Swords, Three of Pentacles, Fool

Meanings and Illustrations: Observation of the Spread

You can tell at a glance that three four cards are not going to make a variety of stories. We have two old people, or a complaining woman and a powerful man (tyrant/government overtones), which are the Queen of Swords and the Emperor. Queen of Swords and Emperor are two old people with controlling or disagreeable attitudes.

Then we have the Fool ‘Oh, don’t bother me, I don’t know’ kind of thing. He is youthful and probably actually young. And right in the middle is the deal (or relationship, or meeting).

Fool and Emperor are both not listening, for two very different reasons: Emperor is too important to pay attention to you, and Fool is oblivious by virtue of youth.

So at first glance, there’s something unfair that is the subject of a complaint, and Authority is not listening to it. And there’s no second glance, that I can see. All the sentences state this idea in its various nuances.

Meanings and Illustrations: Individual Rider Waite Tarot Cards

Queen of Swords is resentful of the way she is being treated: She does not have and is not getting what is rightfully hers. This makes her the ex-wife, the old mama-bat, the bitch … all those stereotypes we aren’t supposed to think of. She means complain, and kinda means ‘petition’ as in petition a grievance.

The illustration for her is this older looking woman sitting sternly erect on a throne with a baby’s face on it (The card somehow means she is a grieving mother.) Her mouth is set in a straight line (Don’t you love the subtle way Pamela Coleman Smith draws facial expressions?)

Three of Pentacles is a deal, a meeting, a meeting of the minds or agreement, a contract, business, and a relationship. Its illustration shows the architect’s final inspection with his clients of the building, a cathedral, prior to his final payment per contract.

Fool is the ‘Don’t bother me with the facts’ dude. Don’t know, don’t care, just let it go, just let it be – just anything. He is that fella who is prancing off the cliff with his puppy dog. These days, he would have an earful of music.

Emperor Here come da judge. This is, say, Al Gore or Bob McCain, or, The Man, the VIP. He is too important to listen. He is a tyrant, whether family or by reason of some title. He is ‘the Old Man,’ the Establishment, the father or father figure: very rigid, overcontrolled … constipated is my word for these folks. At best, he is what I call the ‘old farmer’ type: a stolid person who truly reminds you of a farm animal you can respect.

Emperor is pictured heavy set on his throne which has rams’ heads on it, sitting upright, wearing robes over armor and a crown. His eyes are directed to his right and his lips are pursed in disapproval – to me.

Advice is to be leery of dealing with authority – whether father, boss or president – because you won’t be heard, it will be oblivious and ignore your petition. Don’t go to the meeting. That could refer to a job interview. Don’t be party to an agreement or contract with government: it won’t do what it agreed to. Don’t even bother to complain. This refers to a particular meeting with a rigid dictatorial type.

TAROT ANALYSIS

Assume, when you deal with government, that you won’t get what it agreed to.

The old man is oblivious to what his wife is entitled to in their relationship.

The old boys assume females they deal with will be doing without.

They are in power now: The deal is off, and we don’t care if you whine.

Daddy doesn’t listen to mama complaining about how unfair he is to her.

She may as well be militant, she is dealing with the tyrant.

He shortchanges her in the deal as if he isn’t doing that.

Mr. Big isn’t at the meeting when she complains.

The boss has no idea they are complaining about the deal.

He has no idea the old lady is mad, he assumed she agreed to his terms.

Government assumes you are not fair to older women.

Don’t bother complaining about the terms he dictates.

Meet with the head government man, he doesn’t listen to your petition.

Don’t even bother to meet with the old man and the old lady.

Ignore the old lady’s complaints about her relationship with the old man.

He has no intention of doing his part in the court ordered agreement to pay the victim.

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVATION:

We asked about assertive, and Queen of Swords, the assertive woman and/or victim appears. What a combination we have here! We start with Fool which in the company of these cards means to not know, to be clueless or oblivious. I managed to include its ‘optimistic’ meaning. Next (Six of Wands) comes the plot, the scheme, the mysterious ‘shrinkage,’ the double cross, the person ‘up to something.’ Then the final Page of Cups card means to question, the idiot or ‘stupid,’ a sense of humor, strange.

The assertive victim Rider Waite Tarot card, the Queen of Swords, sits right next to the secret plot, the Six of Wands, which is of course a victim’s sneaky underhanded revenge strategy. You can relate to that, yes?

Both Fool and Page of Cups refer to not knowing, being oblivious, but have different slants on that. (And by the way, Page of Cups is more likely to mean ‘a fool’ than the card labeled Fool.) Both Six of Wands and Page of Cups refer to something suspect or suspicious, but do have different slants on the subject. In this spread, there is clearly a mystery surrounding the Queen of Swords.

Advice is that you don’t always know when you are the victim, you suspect it and you ask questions, or you fight fire with fire and counterplot. The gist of these sentences are, yeah, so what, there are going to be times when you have mooches, secret enemies and fools up with which to put, but, hey, what the heck, don’t leave home without a strategy of your own to deal with these clowns.

Rider_Waite_Tarot_Spread

Fool: This is usually a lighthearted, optimistic youthful card, a card of faith and assumption that all is well. In the company of its today companions, though, it mostly means to not know, to not suspect, to be oblivious, and ‘as if.’ Illustration is of a young fellow taking a stroll off a cliff, a flower in his hand, taking his little doggie with him.

Six of Wands: Oh, this is not where you want to be. This is your double crossing friend, the phony savior or rescue, the embezzler, the pretender, the mooch … the sting. It is also the counter strategy to that, the counterplot. The story illustrated is the betrayal of King Richard to his Arab captivity by his supposed supporters.

Queen of Swords: The assertive or strong (stern) woman is often seen as The Bitch, and a victim (especially a female victim) is often bitter, disagreeable and, yes, bitchy. So this card embraces all those facets. She has her hand out: She is owed and has not been paid. She is demanding. This is the ex-wife, the mama, the mother-in-law.

Page of Cups: How can this be? The idiot, being stupid. Fishy, suspect. To question, or to make the sentence a question. The fellow in the illustration is dressed weirdly and carries a fish in his cup. Those waves that mean instability are behind him, and he has a simple look on his face.
