Four of Pentacles – Keep in mind that Four of Pentacles can mean both holding onto something (the hug he is doing to himself in the picture) and shutting something out (also due to his ‘closed’ body posture, including the poker-faced staring straight ahead).

.

To repress and to keep secret, or not admit, not acknowledge, not talk: These are common Four of Pentacles applications. So are phrases that mean ‘to refrain from’ or ‘not let himself/herself/myself/ourselves.’ “Stifle yourself,” Archie often advised Edith. (All in the Family, classic old TV). That is how the back of my mind characterizes Four of Pentacles. Sometimes Four of Pentacles describes being out of place in your current environment, and just closing down because you and this place don’t have a line of communication at all.

But traditionally – and what is common to most decks – Four of Pentacles is The Miser: He is holding onto his money for dear life. This gives Four of Pentacles a category about budgeting, being short of money, being cheap, not wanting to pay, doing without, and some other applications that would include holding onto your money. ‘Being short of’ expands to other things than money as well: feeling (or being) inferior. It also includes ‘not enough’ as a general phrase.

.

Four of Pentacles is pent-up feelings too: repression. With Seven of Cups today, Four of Pentacles could be about to explode from those pent-up feelings. We did not go there in our one-sentence readings because Lovers is a connection, which doesn’t easily fit in with that story.

And besides pent-up feelings, Four of Pentacles is deep feelings, often translating ‘deep down inside’ or ‘deeply felt’ or even ‘deep.’

.

Note that a medical question will bring Four of Pentacles for ‘internal.’ Once in a while if the name of an organization or department includes the word ‘internal,’ this Four of Pentacles card will appear. Think ‘internal affairs.’

Seven of Cups – Our Seven of Cups story is mainly The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (Fantasia video), and it also fits Pandora’s Box. The confined evil spirits are let loose by negligence. In Sorcerer’s Apprentice, it is the magician’s hapless apprentice who thinks he can fill the boss’ shoes manipulating the spirits, but they are loose and out of his control all over the place. Elements of this story are the main applications of Seven of Cups.

All sorts of things: This is the most common Seven of Cups concept. Scattered about, debris, miscellaneous objects jumbled together, needle-in-a-haystack, one chance in a million, messy or ‘a mess,’ whatever you do, every possible way, pieces or in pieces – words and phrases like that, and there are lots and lots of them. Be creative – whatever fits your story.

Out of control: This too is an extremely common concept of Seven of Cups. It applies across the board: losing control of temper, or of steering, imagination gone rampant – anything at all. ‘Awry’ is an appropriate old-fashioned word for our Seven of Cups card.

.

It doesn’t make sense: Another frequent Seven of Cups application. Messed up, irrational, a wreck, flies off the handle,’ rant and rave, lurid, crazy, or just confusing or confused.

.

Shock. Surprise. The apprentice is in shock. You do something ordinary and something extraordinary happens ‘in your face.’

.

Undoing. Shit hits fan. Here are today phrases for this part of Seven of Cups: fall apart, unravel, when chaos happens, as our lives fall apart, ruins your day, shattered, coming apart at the seams.

.

The spirits get out and are loose doing their mischief: Seven of Cups is ‘gets out’ in the sense of the cat is out of the bag, word gets out (scandal), but only in that sense of the phrase.

.

Last, Seven of Cups includes the redemption of the out-of-control situation – the hope, maybe slim hope, that the chaos isn’t ongoing: The cup with the veil over it is the lone good spirit that was in the box. In Pandora’s Box, it gets out after the bad-guys have a head start.

.

Lovers – A cluttered illustration makes for cluttered meanings. (If you are looking for a comprehensive report of Lovers meanings, Google ‘Tarot Verbatim Lovers.’ First, of course, this card means lovers, love relationship, love affair, the one you love, love life, being with someone you love, etc. All of that.

.

Lovers is two people together, and ‘together’ is one of its leading translates. It is two people together in any way, as well – standing together, being in the same room, being on the same side, being partners, pairing up, being face to face – as well as less obvious togetherness like joint names, and ‘with you’ or ‘with’ whoever. It could even translate ‘co’ for, say co-chairman or co-sponsor.

.

Watch for Lovers to say ‘connect’ in any form of the word. As you may know, meanings in Tarot Verbatim are discovered in the field and recorded; they are not derived by any theory or assignment, and are sometimes counterintuitive.

.

A good example of counterintuitive is the fact that Lovers reliably translates ‘insurance.’ This meaning arises from another fairly counterintuitive translate: supervision. The angel above Adam and Eve there is a higher power and is literally above them: a ‘higher-up.’ And Lovers will translate ‘higher-ups’ in employment inquiries. The angel is looking at them, which brings both ‘surveillance’ and ‘looking out for’ as a guardian angel would. (But this fiery-haired extraterrestrial, to me, is likely the angel that performed the eviction in the story.)

.

As I deal with more and more people who do their own Tarot inquiries, I find these meanings the system I discovered (by asking thousands of questions I knew the answers to over ten years) are accurate in readings that students recorded before they used Tarot Verbatim, which is strange. This ‘insurance’ meaning for Lovers is one of them. So this may be true for you.

Four of Pentacles combines the idea of (1) holding on to what you’ve got (especially what you’ve got that you value inside you) and also of (2) shutting out something that is undesirable to you in your environment, but you seldom see Four of Pentacles mean both of those at the same time. It could, of course.

And Seven of Cups is things out of control, things that are on the loose like a houseful of flies. So Four of Pentacles and Seven of Cups together describe bottling up crazy out of control impulses inside you, and they also describe shutting out crazy out of control elements in the situation around you.

We also have a contradiction in Seven of Cups and Lovers. Lovers is connection, and Seven of Cups is disconnection – broken pieces – so these two cards are about shattered relationships, love gone off the rails, and the general ‘ love does not make sense’ concept. But another picture Seven of Cups and Lovers paints is two people connecting together against the crazy out-of-control world. (You and me against the world – a song.)
