Four of Pentacles
Here’s a mysterious card with far-flung and even contradictory applications. You see a fellow on a very gray day hanging onto his money but sitting far outside of town in a street, hugging himself, staring ahead numbly. He is an outsider to the town. The card is commonly referred to as The Miser, and it does have a lot of money applications: being short of money, hiding money, holding onto money, budget, keeping quiet about finances, cheap (referring to price or value, not just to a person), tightwad or cheapskate of course. That ‘miser’ concept expands in Four of Pentacles to any sort of deficit or being short of, or small amount. Today we say: scarce, very little, nary, anything less. Then it expands a little further to missing a person (being short of the person’s company).
And then the ‘miser’ concept expands a little further to being inferior or not good enough, or feeling that way. That includes being shy, or vulnerable, etc.
Okay. Don’t forget Four of Pentacles can be a hug. That’s easy to overlook, and a hug is something you don’t want to overlook.
The hug posture also attracts ‘deep down inside’ and ‘internal’ meanings. And ‘internal’ is applied very generally to things like internal organs, internal investigations, internal mechanical applications like internal combustion engines, and anything else you can think of. ‘Deep down inside’ also is about holding feelings and other things in, suppressing, restraining yourself, not letting yourself.
Four of Pentacles means both not listening (shutting it out) and not talking (shutting it in). The not talking theme brings unexpected phrase applications like these: than I can say, don’t have anything to say, when you don’t tell, so we won’t tell, you just don’t say anything, and even ‘Silence is golden,’ which combines the money theme with the not-talking theme.
The ‘not talking’ theme expands to keeping a secret, which is actually a pretty common use for Four of Pentacles.
Star
Another mysterious illustration. It combines a bath, a performance in public, feeling good and being healthy, and the speak/tell/say Tarot theme. The story that holds all these together is this: A ritual bath (called ablution) in which the woman who performs it sings as she pours something into the bathing pond, outdoors under Stars. (And she is Star.) So Star is your card for singing, performing, and public announcements.
A branch of Star’s performance theme is salesmanship, sales pitches, the salesy approach.
The speak/tell/say theme is very strong here. Today, on either side of her, Star has two cards that mean not communicating, which has brought that theme out with these words: telling everyone, when they tell me, talking about you, news, publicized, voices, calls, encouraging word, advice, tattletale, talk about, chatty, and compliment.
A branch of speak/tell/say in Star is saying ‘I love you’ or declaring love, or being crazy about.
You feel good after a bath, feel happy and uplifted. So that’s one of Star’s branches too: happier, glee, feels so good, what you enjoy, happier than ever, as well as ‘how healthy I am’ and ‘She is in stellar health.’ Because when you are healthy, you feel good -right?
Last but not least, star is a voluptuous woman – like World, and we have both of them here.
World
Our third mysterious card of the session is even more multifaceted. World has so many applications that, if you want to know all, Google ‘World Tarot Verbatim.’ The main thing to know about World is that wreath around her is about a boundary that sets a person apart, whether the person is shutting out influences, or individuals are being repelled naturally, or even World is not fitting in and is being shut out.
The key concept for World is the same as for Strength: that a person who knows how to handle himself is not interfered with by lower life forms because he or she is superbly qualified to deal with the interference and to prevent the would-be disturbance of peace. For example, walking self-confidently repels muggers – same principle. Another example is how, if you have the perfect squelch for some aggravating situation that keeps presenting itself, you won’t get to use it because it won’t happen again. (Try it.) If you won’t put up with it, it doesn’t show up, in other words.
The wreath actually represents the circle that separates a magician from the critters he or she is influencing. ‘World’ here refers to the title of a top level magician, Master of Both Worlds, and that means said person is boss of both good-guy magic and bad-guy magic – and that is why World has two batons, one in each hand. So World refers to the superior person, the top skill level, the person ‘with no faults.’
The application of the principle we are talking about – that of a person who isn’t interfered with – appears in several ways in today’s session. Here are some of them: doing fine by myself; in a world of my own; not involved in it; not interfered with; doesn’t get to you; have no problems; nothing wrong with me; invulnerable; resistant; private; tune out the environment; shutting out; doesn’t notice; don’t associate with; nothing to do with; won’t put up with; don’t answer; don’t give a damn; pay no attention.
Besides all that, World, like Star, is a gorgeous voluptuous woman. World can literally mean dancer, just as Star can be performer or singer. (World appears as a nude dancer, and one in a cage, once in a blue moon.)

This spread is a good example of what you do when you have two cards that mean the same thing: part of the time, they will each use the meaning they have in common, and the other card will use one of its other meanings.
