Strength – So what’s the story, you think, the first time you see a lady wearing a math sign as a hat (or maybe you think it’s eyeglasses?), dressed in a white robe with flowers as a belt, putting her hands on the snout of an open-mouthed lion as she stands by its side? This picture represents taming the beast: taming the within beast; taming the without beast – and it kinda suggests they are one and the same operation.

.

Strength is all about overcoming, and overcoming without the battle: mental and spiritual jiu jitsu. Strength’s costume represents being a spiritual adept: white robe, flowers, and the eternity sign as a halo. The lion, of course, represents attack. And her hands on its snout keep it from letting loose with that roar stuck in its throat there.

.

So Strength is about prevention. Preventing opposition, preventing interference, preventing attack, nipping trouble in the bud before it gets close enough to be urgent. There’s nothing urgent about Strength’s victory over whatever would have been a problem. She heals the threat with a touch like some people heal ailments with a touch: same thing, but this one is more demonstrable, more provable.

You see this principle of short-circuiting trouble in action whenever a person gives The Look to a wanna-be miscreant. Kindergarten teachers, and some mothers, are expert at this quiet glare. Many people give the mugger or the missionary-for-a-cause The Look, and they go away. A guy on the make may quit persisting if an adept gal gives him The Look.

Strength also covers the operation of risk management, crime prevention, and training a defiant kid or spouse to get along and be civilized. It’s a skill more common to women, but some men have given up raising their voice in favor of this strategy because it does work a lot better.

Okay, that’s the theory. Now the application.

Watch for Strength to translate forms of the word ‘influence,’ and to sometimes simply say ‘makes’ – makes us, makes him, gets us to, gets him to. Today Strength says ‘instigates.’ Once in a while it’s ‘pressure’ she applies to the situation.

Very frequent translates for Strength in Tarot Verbatim™ are ‘hands-on’ and ‘handle’ because she has her hands on the monster. Other ‘hand words’ today are: a grip on; the right touch. And since those hands are on the snout, Strength will also say ‘shut them up’ or ‘shuts up the interference.’

Eight of Pentacles – 14 out of 37 sentences today translate Eight of Pentacles as job or work, which includes phrases like ‘work place,’ ‘working on’ and ‘working at.’ ‘Job’ would include: job site, profession. Look to these words first when pondering this card’s contribution to your sentence. The core meaning of Eight of Pentacles is ‘sequential.’ It all arises from the fast even strokes of a professional carpenter’s hammer. So naturally Eight of Pentacles specializes in construction work subjects – and that may call in Three of Pentacles, which also has a construction theme.

Repetitive acts belong to Eight of Pentacles when it isn’t being work or job. Some of the words that convey this concept are: ‘keep’ and ‘keeps’ when the verb means consistent action; habit; making; always; one after another; every once in a while; each and every; consistently; routine.

Three of Cups – Here’s those Three Musketeers from the Sisterhood of Women Doing Well. They celebrate a mutual profit from their joint efforts in growing those pumpkins and marketing them. Here’s another card that equally applies to both commerce and social life, as does Three of Pentacles (also a Three).

Three of Cups is definitely a girly card, just not exclusively that: It strongly means other things as well. But today we see it translate: women, women’s, the girls. It also translates that the girl or the girls win – which applies to whatever kind of win the story involves.

.

Three of Cups often uses more than one of its meanings in a given sentence. First let’s look at Three of Cups fun side: It brings us words like upbeat, friends happy, people happy, happy you did, everybody’s delight, funloving women, fun when you do (whatever) with people … specifically, with people you ‘know, like, and trust,’ which is a mantra of commerce. And then there are ‘enjoy’ phrases for Three of Cups: enjoy life all night; we enjoy (whatever).

Three of Cups is very much specifically about socializing. It says, today: social life, socialize, enjoy drinks together, dating her, dating women, partying. It is about friends getting together. It is about a team, often a team at work, or teamwork, or teaming up, or a team of equals. The team is often three people – as is the team in Three of Pentacles. Today ‘everyone is on the same page’ echoes this teamwork sentiment.

Three of Cups is definitely the celebration of a win or an achievement. ‘Celebrate’ is one of its favorite words, and the girls are obviously toasting their financial prowess. And Three of Cups is about having drinks together too of course. Sometimes I translate it “I’ll drink to that.”

Now for Three of Cups’ sharing side. Along with Three of Pentacles, this is THE card for sharing – for shared work, shared profit (It can even be dividends in the stock market or a profit sharing program, for instance.), sharing good times, sharing rewards, sharing equally.

Three of Cups has a mystery side too. That is very strong when it does appear. I have had it appear incessantly in that story for an unknown element that overturns a situation and creates a pleasing result through justice. I translated that unknown element as Trinity. Clients who report this same phenomenon in their work have translated it the Furies, the three Muses … always three parties.

Page of Cups – Our picture is a fellow wearing women’s garb who carries a fish around in a cup. Inappropriate, doesn’t add up. Making a fool of oneself. Page of Cups is one of the cards that means ‘question’ and can turn your sentence into a question. It means anything strange. It means words like ‘something’ and ‘somehow.’ It means to wonder or think (as in theorize), to not know, ‘for no reason,’ and ‘strange.’

Page of Cups can mean any synonym for being foolish: a fool, dumb, silly, goofy, goofball. It also means to be a misfit or not fit in or feel out of place, or feel weird.

Strength – Strength is overcoming, but its scope is very broad about that. First, the overcoming can be one’s own internal issues; can be external opposition, attacks or foes; can be whatever the obstacle in the way of progress is. The emphasis can be on the intrusion, on preventing problems or trouble, on the trait of being bossy or assertive or in control of oneself. Strength can also be the overcomer, the one who has self-control, the one who’s got the problem licked. Advice is about wielding the kind of influence,  having the kind of air about yourself,  that nips opposition in the bud.  She can handle anything,  she pets lions who want to eat her.  A spiritual adept is seldom opposed face-on in ‘the real world’  in the same way that a gorgeous sexy woman tends to get her way no matter how a fellow fights the influence.  But there are people that this drives crazy and they mouth off.

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS:  OBSERVATION OF THE SPREAD

We have two women who are ‘winners’  in different ways.  Empress is sitting pretty,  has got it made,  is gorgeous,  is comfortable,  relaxed (‘laid back’),  life is easy and things are easy for her.  (Well of course they are:  She is the fertility goddess.) Strength is skilled at influencing,  particularly influencing whatever would get in her way.  She defuses conflict while it is still a spark in the eye of the predator.

 

Right in the middle of these two dames,  who do we have?  The mouthy pushy Seven of Wands teenybopper hellraiser,  the guy who feels his turf is intruded upon.  He’s mad as hell and won’t take it anymore,  whatever it is.  Then comes Eight of Pentacles saying this happens all the time and/or is happening at work.  This story has latitude,  can spread out.

 

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS:  INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT

CARDS

Empress is the stereotype of the laid-back southern white trash barfly (and I mean that in a nice way) who calls all the guys ‘honey.’  She could be the barkeep,  too.  As the fertility goddess,  she can be the ideal woman or on the slutty side,  or both.  She is spoiled,  is living the rich life of leisurely luxury there on her many cushions.  ‘The blond goddess,’  Leonard Cohen says in one of his wonderful songs.

 

Seven of Wands is the stereotypical pushy loudmouth anything.  He doth protest.  It also means to defend yourself,  you are under some sort of attack,  and the fight is against the odds for you to win … but you will.  This is a teenager of any age.  This is the ‘in your face’  person.  In Tarot Verbatim™  the action and the person are interchangeable,  so it can be any part of this experience.  It can be you who is mad as hell and not going to take it anymore.  Pictured is a fellow defending his position for all he’s worth against several neighbors.

 

Strength is the person who has ‘the touch,’  has the skill to shut down opposition before it is raised.  The symbols on this Rider Waite Tarot card indicate a spiritually skilled person influences the environment in such a way that opposition does not occur ‘in the real world.’  So Seven of Wands is up against his master.  That lion is not purring because he wants to,  he is purring because he has to.

 

Eight of Pentacles shows up a lot,  doesn’t he?  This means it happens over and over,  and/or it happens at work.  That carpenter is at his work bench making the same object over and over.
