………………….…………………… We have both happiness (Sun) and depression (Ten of Wands), and being mindful (Knight of Pentacles) in our spread here. Sun is also childhood, children, being young, fun and freedom – which enriches our spread (‘an embarrassment of riches’ as they say). Our story is that we wedge ourselves into fixes we long to get out of, so the struggle to be free and happy requires a lot of thought. There’s a subtle underlying theme to enjoy the hard journey that *foretaste of freedom* inspires us to set out on. Why not have a side order of fun along with the struggle, we ask.
………………………….. Sun‘s illustration lets loose quite a few meanings, applies to quite a few situations. Sun’s basic meaning is being free of restrictions, feeling the relief and the joy of that – vacation time, par-tay! You see the kid on the pony with the flag, arms akimbo in the sunshine. Naturally Sun means childish behavior, playing hooky. But it also means enjoying life.
So the next meaning is fun. But that meaning is complicated by the recklessness of the tyke mounted on *that pony with no sense of humor*. Besides that, today Knight of Pentacles’ contribution makes that a callous playboy. (Knight of Pentacles is your macho dude, you know.) Having fun is stretched to ‘I just wanna have my fun.’
Sun means to leave too, especially the ‘getting out from under’ kind of leaving. It can say ‘I’m outta here.’ It is leaving home (including pulling out of the driveway, especially with Chariot).
Next we have ‘cutting loose,’ ‘letting your hair down,’ being spontaneous, being uninhibited, the opposite of ‘being hung up.’ This meaning goes along with enjoying life.
Since Sun shows the little tyke, it is one of the children cards, often a boy-child. It can tell you the baby is going to be a boy, for instance. So it brings up childhood, having children, behavior of children – anything along that line. Since it means both childhood and getting free, you find it coming up as getting free of childhood. Today Ten of Wands makes that the cargo of one’s childhood as a burden, since Sun is getting free of it.
………………………….. Ten of Wands shows a backbreaking task underway. It is also about being down, being worn out, depressed, overwhelmed, overloaded with too many tasks. Remember: Ten of Wands is gonna make it. He is taking on doing it all in one load, or taking on some heavy responsibility (especially with a card that means responsibility, like Chariot). Ten of Wands is slow steady progress so it is an encouraging card in spite of its discouraging vibe.
So right after all that cheer and freedom from Sun, comes the depressing grind Ten of Wands has taken upon himself. Sun is free and having the time of his life; Ten of Wands is overwhelmed and overloaded, multitasking and staying up nights. But Sun is expected to crash, and Ten of Wands is the turtle who won the race with the rabbit by sticking to the course.
………………………….. Knight of Pentacles can be the stereotype tough guy, often a short darker fellow like you see in the illustration. Often the person this Rider Waite Tarot card represents has muscles. Even the horse is a sturdy-bodied individual.
Knight of Pentacles’ main meaning is concentration, thinking, viewing or looking (or staring at) – even obsession. Knight of Pentacles has one thing on his mind, has one priority, one thing that’s most important. This is his main focus, and ‘focus’ is one of his words. Knight of Pentacles is one pig-headed fellow, stubborn, often. He is not famous for insight, of course. He can be a punk or a thug too. This Tarot card often translates ‘focus’ and ‘the most important thing’ or priority. It can mean ‘the only’ too, as in: the only thing, the only way, etc. He has his dark side which, say, Seven of Swords can bring out. Still remember Miami Vice re-runs? – he is Don Johnson. In a romance question, he can be the guy who thinks only of his one love interest.
Just because something is depressing is no reason to be depressed. We talk about very deliberately turning your attention from whatever is burdensome and tiresome, to any old fun you can find. Cut loose, get out in the sunshine, let your hair down in some uninhibited scene of your choice, and have ‘me time.’

Sun ……… Make sure you read Observing’s Sun entry; it’s all laid out in detail there. You look at the illustration of the kid on the wicked pony, having a field day until his naked butt is tossed. You figure, correctly, that this is about having fun, enjoying life in the sunshine, being a kid or acting like one, being reckless, getting out of the house for some recreation, and leaving. Being free of restrictions (like a vacation, playing hooky, a night on the town) is the nut of Sun’s spectrum of meanings. Other cards can turn that ‘reckless’ meaning ominous, but it isn’t there all by itself.

Ten of Wands …………. Ten of Wandsshows a backbreaking task underway. It is also about being down, being worn out, depressed, overwhelmed, overloaded with too many tasks. Remember: Ten of Wands is gonna make it. He is taking on doing it all in one load, or taking on some heavy responsibility (especially with a card that means responsibility, like Chariot). Ten of Wands is slow steady progress so it is an encouraging card in spite of its discouraging vibe.

Knight of Pentacles ………… Knight of Pentacles has one thing on his mind, has one priority, one thing that’s most important. This is his main focus, and ‘focus’ is one of his words. He can be a muscle-man, can be a tough guy, can be obsessed/obsessive. He has his dark side which, say, Seven of Swords can bring out. Still remember Miami Vice re-runs? – he is Don Johnson. In a romance question, he can be the guy who thinks only of his one love interest.

Advice Ever wonder how, when we are very intensely interested in something, we also are intense when we change our minds about it? Like the energy going in has to equal the energy coming out? A hot love affair often ends explosively, not that it has to. Guys who have a bad temper are the very ones to get really stuck on dames. And dainty women attract the goons. Our story today is about these impasses. Impasses in business or social life happen when I know something about them that is a deal-breaker, but I am not saying.

Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things especially when the Spread has a card that negates other cards. Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information!

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: OBSERVATION OF THE SPREAD
We got a story, Houston. The core meanings of these four cards tell it, and of course there are variations on the theme, as is always true of Love. Breaking up (Tower) with the lady or other woman (High Priestess), he is obsessed (Knight of Pentacles) for a long time, deeply, and it’s difficult (Ten of Wands).
High Priestess also means a woman alone, a woman who waits, a woman who is spiritual or is into the occult, an ultra-feminine or even meek woman.
MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT CARDS
Tower shows a building hit by lightning and people being ejected from it, afire. To reject, divorce or break up, to quit, and to hit, are its most common meanings, closely followed by explosive temper tantrums.
High Priestess actually stands for the feminine principle of receptivity, a technical term in occult theory, so she is ultra-feminine. What she means in most spreads is the lady or the other woman, but she also indicates the spiritual plane, a spiritual adept, an expert or scholar, a recluse, a woman who knows and keeps quiet – even a bookkeeper once in a while, since she is pictured with a book in her lap, the Torah.
Knight of Pentacles has one thing on his mind, is focused or even obsessive. Today he is being very obsessive. He is the tough, rough, or macho guy. The picture shows a stereotype of that: the short dark fella who is very muscular and sure of himself, a strong man physically who is rigid mentally.
Ten of Wands Doing it all in one load, one trip, is a strain, but when you’re done, you’re done. That is Ten of Wands’ concept. He has a burden on his back, but his slow progress will get him there eventually. His meanings arise from this illustration, as they should in Tarot Verbatim’s analysis of Rider Waite. Long, slow, difficult going. It can mean depression … the burden … too.

He is as obsessed as a man can get, over a woman who has figured out not to do anything herself.
She can see this tough guy isn’t going to be doing anything for a long time.
He is determined to wait as long as he possibly can; he knows she is loyal and thinks only of him.
Her man hasn’t done a thing in a long time, and this other guy is really interested in her, she can see that.
He knows how tired this sweet gal is of sleeping alone.
He knows she is ‘the kind you marry’ and there isn’t going to be any action for a long time.
She knows it is very important for him to catch up on his sleep.
He is determined to wait a long time to have anything to do with the sweet kind of gal you marry.
At one end is a guy with one thing on his mind, Knight of Pentacles. At the other end is a woman who is also thinking of him, Queen of Cups. In the middle are two cards which say ain’t nothing happening, just waiting. (I guess that’s why the girl is on the town, up there in our first spread.)
Advice seems to suggest the gal – yes – go out if she wants some romance.
Meanings and Illustrations:
Knight of Pentacles: This sturdy dude has one thing on his mind. Today it is the gal. He is very macho and muscled, and so is his horse.
Ten of Wands: A long slow plodding difficult wait, it is. He is loaded down with too much of the same thing. He has taken on the whole load all at once and is not making much progress.
Four of Swords: Just lying there. Not doing anything. Waiting around. Sleeping. A guy isn’t calling you, isn’t coming around, isn’t doing a thing. Lying on a stone coffin, yet.
Queen of Cups: Queen of Cups: She thinks of her man. She has faith in him. She is the naïve type, the naif. She is ‘vanilla.’ She stares dreamily at the funky artifact.
