Ten of Wands – You take it all upon yourself, and it slows you down, but you make it. It takes longer but, gee, it saves steps to do it all in one load, so it saves time too. Ten of Wands is overloaded with a difficult undertaking. Ten of Wands sometimes calls forth ‘on my back’ and ‘backbreaking.’

By way of this overload situation, Ten of Wands means ‘too.’ Too much, too long, too many. Another similar set of phrases involve ‘a lot’ and ‘lots of,’ and similar expressions – like ‘more than.’

Ten of Wands gets the word ‘extreme’ and also words that describe extreme cases – words like ‘worst cases.’ Not today, but you often find Ten of Wands saying ‘hard.’ Today, it does say ‘difficult,’ which is one of its categories. Today, this card says ‘deep,’ which is rare but comes from the idea of the extreme.

Temperance – This picture mystifies, and it should. This card was one that was added to the deck to deflect deadly accusations of witchcraft in Europe in the Middle Ages. Diluting your wine was considered pious – hence ‘Temperance.’ In 37 years of doing Tarot, I may have experienced Temperance meaning ‘dilute’ once.

The pouring together of the two liquids in real-life Tarot practice expresses (1) the back-and-forth of communication, and (2) the blending or mixing of getting together with another person – including intimately. So Temperance is a relationship, including a close or intimate relationship. Buddies, friends, business associates, lovers.

Temperance also is about deal, dealing, exchanges. The ‘deal’ chapter of Temperance’s meanings is a large one.

Temperance also means healing because of the symbol on the angel’s chest.

Yes, sometimes it’s about the angel. When it is, you will probably see other cards with an angel on them, like Judgment or Lovers. If your question involved an angel, though, one angel is enough in the spread.

Queen of Pentacles – She holds the gold, and that bunny denotes fertility. So does the greenery around her. Queen of Pentacles is the woman with money, which can be the bookkeeper, accountant, stockbroker, or any sort of money manager. So this is a woman who has enough money for herself. She possesses other things generally too – and is possessive. Today, it’s a lot of ‘material’ she has.

Quite often, Queen of Pentacles is generous, and quite often she contributes or invests money, which is part of her ‘backing’ meaning (backing her man, often). She supports and is supportive. She can support her man financially, of course. (And today, with Ten of Wands, he is depressed about that.)

Queen of Pentacles mainly is about the loyal wife who backs and cares for her man, family, and clan. She may go beyond nurturing into ‘fussing over.’ She is often the female head of a family clan.

Like Queen of Wands and Nine of Pentacles, Queen of Pentacles is a skilled woman and a woman who runs or manages something – home or business usually. In this capacity, watch for her phrases about handling something or someone – usually her man because Queen of Pentacles is often the married (matriarchal) woman.

Today Temperance as healing turns Queen of Pentacles into a nurse, and brings out her nurturing side.

Queen of Pentacles does more than her part in a relationship. That’s our main story here today. She even takes on an onerous burden for, or with, a person she is close to – or as a partner. There’s a lot of discussion back and forth with a helpful supportive woman.

Financial and emotion support are equated.

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: OBSERVATION OF THE SPREAD

Today’s theme is caring for relatives, children and the home – and caring both financially and lovingly. Both Queen of Pentacles and Hermit are caretakers. She takes care of her man and her man’s financial affairs as the loyal worldly wife. He is the devoted loyal kind supportive man who is faithful.

Six of Cups is also taking care lovingly and taking care financially. It embraces romance and children. It is also the old home, the family home, the good old days, sweet memories.

Ten of Wands adds ‘a long time’ and ‘very much’ to all this loving care.

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT CARDS

Queen of Pentacles takes loving care of her man and her man’s financial affairs as the loyal worldly wife. She takes care of his estate or home. Stereotypically the assertive Italian matriarch. There she is with her hands on the money in the fertile fields (See the bunny rabbit there?)

Ten of Wands is the extreme: it is longer, deeper … more. It goes on forever. It takes on the whole load in one exhausting operation. See him there with all the firewood on his back?

Six of Cups is romance and children, so the illustration is of the little boy giving the little girl flowers. It is about old neighborhood, old times, old house. Nostalgia galore.

Hermit is mature. He is devoted, supportive, loyal, monogamous, faithful, honest, helpful … sounding like a Boy Scout. He is the old man, the grandfather. That is the aspect of him we are using today. He is the counselor and way-shower too. Rider Waite even pictures him as the monk in search of strangers to help in the middle of the night.
