Three of our four Rider Waite Tarot panelists at our Tarot conference table are about exerting influence.
Two of them, Queen of Pentacles and Strength, are strong women who exert a good influence, in different ways: Queen of Pentacles supports and takes care as the wife and mother. She manages her man’s or family’s money and general affairs for them, and is loyal. Strength is the assertive woman who nips problems of all types in the bud: She prevents any intruding influence, and foils any attempted attack. She can be rough, whereas Queen of Pentacles babies the family.
Two of Cups, in Tarot Verbatim™, is undue influence, interfering in the affairs of another for your benefit and not theirs, using someone, cheating on a partner, misrepresenting in a deal, enticing or seducing (sales pitches), as well as addictions and vices. It translates ‘behind the scenes’ sometimes and is generally subversive in some way. Why? That funky winged lion’s head over entwined snakes stands for interference from bad spirits. It’s called the caduceus. Its presence between the couple ‘pledging their troth,’ (promising to marry – a serious thing back in the day) indicates one or both of them is self-serving, cheating, or insincere.
Two of Cups and Strength is the thwarting of attempted harmful interference. Two of Cups is the attempt, and Strength is the quashing of it. Overcoming a bad habit or vice is included in this concept. So is disciplining the sneak.
Queen of Pentacles and Two of Cups is the woman who takes over by serving, the possessive woman who enslaves a fellow, the woman using her money to influence (in our today story, to influence the family). Mothering a family member who is impaired – addicted, say – is also included in this concept.
Four of Wands has been standing by representing family, marriage, and real estate. It is also a building – not just a house – so it is the treatment center when Two of Cups, addiction or impairment, joins it, since Strength brings up the idea of the solution.

Strength overcomes. It often overcomes an attack of any sort, or an influence of any sort, from outside; but it also refers to overcoming yourself and having character. The idea in the illustration is that she has such strength of character, such spiritual abilities, that the lion that came to attack ends of purring and hating every minute of it instead.

Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things, especially when the Spread has a card that means ‘no, never or not.’ That negative modifier can apply to any one of the cards.
Without a question also the pronouns (you, him, her, me, us, them, they, etc.) in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. Notice how, as much as possible, we drop pronouns, which makes for some awkward phrasing.
The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information! In a ‘real’ reading, the parties are identified (including the gender of the questioner!), and so is the time frame if there is one. In this group reading, we cannot do that, so we have variety.
