Wheel of Fortune – Ace of Cups is a diagram of an idea, and so is Wheel of Fortune. The four Hebrew letters that make up ‘Jehovah,’ alternate with the four letters of ‘rota,’ – the root word of English ‘rotate’ and ‘rotation’ – which means ‘wheel.’ These letters appear on what looks like a roulette wheel. The wheel all this refers to is in Greek and Roman myth as fate, destiny, karma, and coincidence. The idea being diagrammed is that otherworldly forces – good ones (name of God) and bad ones (all the funky critters around the outside of the wheel and in the corners of the card) act through coincidence to cause events in our physical world. So the idea is that coincidence is – and coincidence accomplishes – destiny.

In real practice, the most frequent meanings for Wheel of Fortune are: wonderful; miracle; luck and good luck; ‘happens’ in all its forms, as well as ‘event’ or what happens; and opportunity or chance.

Wheel of Fortune also often means: best, good, happen for the best, as well as ‘pays off’ and ‘hit the jackpot’ and ‘luck out.’ Those last are gambling terms (or can be) and, yes, Wheel of Fortune is the main card to speak of gambling.
Four of Swords – There is or was a ceremony to become a knight, a ritual that involved meditating all night (as many nights as it took) in the church, awaiting a vision of your life purpose as a knight. The bishop had to approve your vision. This illustrates that ritual. Four of Swords’ meanings come from this story.

‘Not participating’ is the standard title you encounter in Tarot books for Four of Swords. Any kind of not being involved, not being interested, sleep, rest, or lying down belongs to Four of Swords. Here are today’s main applications for this Four of Swords concept: peace and quiet; holding out for, or waiting for; staying or remaining; isn’t interested; isn’t involved; isn’t paying attention; nothing is happening, uneventful; time out, time off, retire; relax; lying down, lying around, bedridden; meditating.
Queen of Wands – I think of Queen of Wands as The Mama, and I hear that folk song ‘Mama Don’t Allow No __ in This House.’ Queen of Wands is the wife and mother (the main card that means ‘wife’). Female gender here: Queen of Wands sometimes translates ‘woman’ or ‘woman who.’ This is the woman who has the house and the people in it, in order; has her personal affairs in order; has a business in order. Queen of Wands is the manager at the business. A woman who puts up with no nonsense and has a sharp eye out for misbehavior. (However, at least in my experience, she is not the overt disciplinarian – she doesn’t administer correction, she simply prevents any need for it.)

Queen of Wands (also Queen of Pentacles) is The Competent Woman, the woman who can, the woman who has the ability.

Queen of Wands is also about keeping one’s personal affairs in order, about minding one’s own business, and about private life in general.

Wheel of Fortune – Four of Swords – Six of Pentacles

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
.……….………. Wheel of Fortune to the left is a wonderful thing happening; Six of Pentacles to the right is receiving reward – money or attention, or anything. And between them is nothing being done, no participation. It’s not just about freebies and the lottery, though, it describes having enough money to pay the bills when you retire, or not spending money to make money, or all the times when doing nothing pays off. You aren’t paying attention to a grand opportunity, though – because Six of Pentacles is paying attention, and Four of Wands isn’t, and Wheel of Fortune is the grand opportunity. We are looking at various intersections of nothing being done and something happening – things you don’t think of right off the bat. Like, payback occurs when no one is paying attention; and nothing is happening until you get the money to make it happen. That’s our stories for today.
……………………. Wheel of Fortune illustrates the concept that spiritual forces of various sorts affect events in the physical world. Ask yourself how you would draw that graph! Here, an ancient mystical word that means wheel or Wheel of Fortune, rota, alternates its letters with the four letters of the Hebrew alphabet that make up what gets translated as Yahweh or Jehovah in English. Rota appears in more than one myth, one involving Apollo. (The Apollo connection also appears in Moon with the two towers that mark the end of the earth, beyond which are dragons. (People in Western culture really believed this – it was a problem for Christopher Columbus. The Vikings didn’t seem to have a problem with it, though. They were probably hunting the dragons: They had them on the prow of their vessels.)
Here also are various otherworldly critters positioned around the wheel. The lizard is a bad guy: I have encountered him in literature. I think the sphinx is a fearsome critter too. The ones with the books probably refer to the idea there’s a record of your life ‘out there,’ whether you’ve been good or bad.
The Wheel of Fortune looks like a roulette wheel, which brings coincidence and randomness into its dictionary.
In practice, Wheel of Fortune is about chance, and is mostly hitting-the-jackpot kinds of chance: grand opportunity, winning, payoffs, lucky events, optimum results, happening for the best, turning (wheel) out well. Wheel of Fortune often says it happens, so if you ask whether something will happen and you get this card, well …. It often translates: happening, happens, it happens – and that doesn’t have to be for the best, meaning simply an event.
……………………. Four of Swords, you need to know the story. This is the knighthood ceremony. Being born noble didn’t make you a knight (at least in theory). You had to go to another castle and serve as a page, an apprentice; you had to learn the various modes of combat; and you had to go through this ceremony with the bishop. You overnighted in the cathedral, lying on the container (sarcophagus) of its patron saint or hero, meditating on your life purpose as a knight. It was a vision quest. You reported your vision to the bishop. He could approve it or not – send you back to the coffin.
So Four of Swords isn’t really about death; it is to not participate, time out, to zone out, being sidelined, meditation, and, yes, visions. It is to sleep, to be quiet, to retire, to not pay attention, to incubate, to park yourself somewhere. It means you aren’t going to do it, you don’t have to do it, you didn’t do it. It picks up phrases like ‘dead to the world’ and couch potato’ and ‘sleep through.’ It represents a person in a coma. It says ‘dormant’ and ‘inert’ and ‘passive’ and unresponsive. ‘Unresponsive’ also means he doesn’t call you as well as ‘he is laid up.’ Four of Swords is being indifferent – I don’t care – to have nothing doing in your life. That’s nothing doing in your life and you love it, or nothing doing in your life and you hate it.

Receiving is featured because Wheel of Fortune echoes Six of Pentacles ‘reward’ category, and its picture shows people receiving wages . Wheel of Fortune is something wonderful, some opportunity, some major stroke of good luck, happening; Six of Pentacles is to have that put into your hands. But … but Four of Swords can say it doesn’t happen, as well as ‘you didn’t do anything, you didn’t participate.’ So Six of Pentacles on the one hand is about really cashing in, and on the other is, it isn’t happening, or your not doing something (or anything) is a factor in the story. Wheel of Fortune……...Wheel of Fortune is all about coincidence, which a lot of people think ‘There’s no such thing’ about. Its stylized illustration manages to say (once you’re clued in) that otherworldly influences, divine ones and infernal ones, affect worldly events. I wrote about the illustration’s interpretation up there in Learn Tarot by Observing.
Wheel of Fortune often simply says ‘happens,’ usually referring to a good thing but not always. ‘Occurs’ is another word for ‘happens.’
Its next most common translates are all the words you can think of about good fortune, opportunity or a big chance.
Less frequent are words and phrases about destiny, karma, fate, chance and the chances of, gambling and the odds of – and other randomness-associated words. Both Wheel of Fortune and Six of Pentacles can be payback.
Wheel of Fortune brings up slang words like hitting the jackpot, lucking out, Lady Luck, beating the odds, and so on.

Four of Swords………….Four of Swords too means more when you know the story behind the picture. I wrote about the illustration’s interpretation for Four of Swords too, up in Learn Tarot by Observing. Four of Swords is being removed from activity in any way. It can be deciding to be unresponsive, or it can be an unresponsive (terrible euphemism!) patient. It can be exempt from; it can be time out; it can be vision quest or retirement – any way at all of being removed from action – except, maybe, prison or jail – and it is only a mild support card for death despite the fellow stretched out in a death pose upon a coffin. It often is sleep or being asleep, and it calls forth slang terms for sleep, like being dead to the world, etc. Four of Swords is a car in neutral gear, even, sometimes, or dead weight.

Six of Pentacles………Six of Pentacles spreads out in more directions than first meet the eye. Not today though. Today it is stretched between not happening and happening by its companion cards. Today brings legal proceedings and payback, paying attention, money exchanges of various kinds, ‘right,’ and other exchanges like microbes being passed, and ‘given to me.’ The scales of justice make the legal proceedings. Both Wheel of Fortune and Six of Pentacles mean getting money. The illustration pictures an exchange (wages being paid) which creates all the ‘paying’ phrases and the exchange ones.

Both Knight of Wands and Eight of Cups are outa there and on the road. Knight of Wands is energetically and purposefully pursuing but Eight of Cups is an accidental tourist; his being on the road is some kind of disruption, interference or shift. Knight of Wands is pursuing a career or course of action, whereas Eight of Cups is dropping out. (However, in other spreads, you may find Knight of Wands ‘getting out of Doge,’ fleeing.)
Both Wheel of Fortune and Eight of Cups are about a change or shift. Wheel of Fortune is the opportunity, the chance, the lucky break that gets wonderful things started, gets you on your way, so it is most likely a chance for something good to happen; but Eight of Cups is simply the change or shift: It could go either way. Both Wheel of Fortune and Eight of Cups tend to be sudden change.
And of course there’s Four of Swords asleep at the switch, or waiting, or indifferent and unresponsive. Both Four of Swords and Eight of Cups are not going to: Eight of Cups is dropping out or taking a detour, and Four of Swords just isn’t interested.
Our story today is: What do we do with chance, change, opportunity, and strokes of luck? Do we miss the bus, or do we sail to glory? The advice implies that keeping an eye out for some beautiful thing will be rewarded.
LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

Wheel of Fortune illustrates the idea that both angels and devils meddle in our affairs, making things happen or not happen. In the center of the roulette wheel of fate or destiny is the Name of God in Hebrew, interspersed with TARO (or ROTA? Or both?), and around the wheel and in the corners are various occult critters, some with books. In practice, Wheel of Fortune is the good luck card. It means ‘It happens,’ it means opportunity. This card and Nine of Cups are the ones you hope appear if you want something.
Four of Swords lies there doing nothing, is indifferent, does not respond or participate, sleeps through it all, is a couch potato or lazy person. Four of Swords is ‘time out,’ is on vacation, is taking a nap, is in an inactive or dormant phase. A person has no energy, is prostrate, is passed out or even in a coma. This Rider Waite Tarot card can also be about meditation or vision quest: The illustration shows a candidate for knighthood lying overnight on the sarcophagus of his church’s saint or hero. There is no resistance: Four of Swords is the Beatles’ song ‘Let It Be.’ Resigned to whatever.
Knight of Wands It is opportunity Knight of Wands pursues right now, represented by the Wheel of Fortune in our spread. He is in a hurry, and the pursuit is purposeful. He makes fast progress, gets ahead on the fast track. This is an energetic person. The illustration covers fleeing as well as pursuing; Knight of Wands can be either.
Eight of Cups An abrupt change that is not voluntary – of any kind. Changing direction, aborting course, dropping out, lucking out, encountering a shift. Be forced off the road, walk off, give up, disappear, quit (anything). Disruption. Deflected. Unexpected, without notice, sudden (anything). Many variations of this them for Eight of Cups. The illustrations shows a pilgrim (who intends to resume course) having to go around a mountain because that is where the road goes.

Wheel of Fortune happens, is a ‘happenin’ thing.’ The illustration and the title screams “Opportunity!” Fate and destiny are sometimes involved … not so much today. What looks like a roulette wheel has occult symbols that are about the process of things, the stages of happenings.
Four of Swords sleeps indifferently through it all, has no energy. Four of Swords lets things happen to him (or her). This is a couch potato, a lazy person, and a phase in which you are not active. It is a snooze of some sort. Other meanings are fairly rare, like meditation and vision quest and coma. Eight of Cups abruptly departs one direction for another, encounters a shift or change. It could luck out or drop out, and which it is may not be apparent. Illustration shows a pilgrim having to make a turn because the terrain forces it.
