GUIDANCE        We are marking time when we haven’t left yet, but there’s nothing for us here and we are on our way out. It could be leaving a dwelling, a companion, a job, a geographical location … it could even be growing a new shell because the whole environment is a tight fit. Sometimes it’s looking back sadly at the old situation now that we are going to be free of it, not having quite cut that last strand or cord of attachment to it. We are saying goodbye to the piece of the past that we actually liked. There’s always that. Almost always that. I will be in a world of my own when I get over this.

World – Three of Wands – Six of Swords

………………………     Three of Wands and Six of Swords are both future-oriented cards, and both say good things are coming. Six of Swords says that’s because anything is better than this, and I’m leaving; Three of Wands just says good things are coming, for sure, imminently. World … well, World doesn’t put up with bad things. So our story is heading on out to better waters than this.

…………………………..   World has the same type of critters in clouds that Wheel of Fortune has. Wheel of Fortune’s point is that spiritual entities influence chance and make destiny in your life. But World has grown up: World brooks no interference; the entities are not even looking in its direction, and there’s a wall between the World figure and the critters. When I am World, I am in a World of my own. (World is considered both genders, by the way.) World is a ‘master of both worlds,’ esoterically speaking: Skilled at both sides of the magic street, therefore so respected by the bad spirits that they don’t see this person. Think about it: Muggers, who are the evil spirits of the physical world, also disregard a person who is perfectly capable of doing unto them as they would do unto others.

Common applications for World involve that wreath-wall. Here are some of the basic ones:

………………………….. Three of Wands is so simple, one of the best anchor cards (cards that have so few meanings, and such focused applications, that you look to them first to find your theme). Look at it, see where it hooks onto another, or other, cards in your spread, and you are on your way. Income, (incoming anything) money coming in, profit, good things are on their way soon, wait for the payoff, the payoff, and most especially ‘the future,’ words like ‘will be’ and ‘are going to’ that presage the future, and, yes future tensing on other verb-cards. It’s easy to forget this card can apply to docking of a boat or ship, or to a journey by water.

………………………….. Six of Swords is you getting out of here to live another day. “You will get over this,” Six of Swords says, as you move on to a better scene. Recovering (from a death, an illness, a loss, from depression) and moving on into a new and better phase. Judgment means this recovery too. In Six of Swords, the emphasis can be on the angst of leaving a bad scene (‘Putting it behind you’ is a common translate for this card.), or the optimism of going to a better place. Moving to a better job, for instance.

Six of Swords shows people leaving like refugees in a boat, huddled in the gray dawn, so it is obviously about journey by boat, and obviously about a sorry past. It’s also obviously one of the many cards that mean leaving: It means ‘distancing’ and ‘widening gulf’ as well – drifting apart, you know.

The ‘friend helps’ is less obvious: Hermit and Knight of Cups both mean that as well, by the way. ‘The future will be better’ is not obvious. It is a built-in Tarot assumption, proven in the field.

There’s a stage of life when we have climbed to a landing of the stairs, to a plateau in our story, gone as far as we can go (or as far as we care to go in that scene) and we look back before we move on up to the next level. At this stage, we are over it, and headed on out, but not quite finished. We no longer care about things we used to look forward to, but we aren’t focused on the next leg of the journey either.

World……….. World has it made. You reach a place in personal growth and spiritual development where nothing much gets to you – ‘water off a duck’s back,’ as they say. World is there; World is an adept. Trouble avoids world. You can be World, if you aren’t already. She has a buffer zone around her, and isn’t interactive – very much like High Priestess (she who stays put and knows all). World’s time is devoted exclusively to things that interest her (or him, actually: World is considered both genders in spite of the dancing-girl illustration).

Being superior is one of World’s main traits, being the expert. World does not care what people think, and there’s no effort to that stance: This is a maverick, untouchable, person, often.

There are some meanings that diverge from this profile, like being ‘in the box,’ but not so much today, and those minor meanings must be introduced by cards with meanings that butt heads with World’s basic meanings.

Three of Wands…………. Three of Wands’ illustration says it all: Your ship comes in. This isn’t ‘The check is in the mail,’ though: You are looking at that ship sailing into port. Good things are on their way to you based on past doings. Income, profit, cash flow, money coming, it pays off any time now. Two other meanings are waiting and the future. Actually, what this Tarot card mostly does is add future tense or such future-indicating phrases as: coming, will and will be, going to. Once in a while, Three of Wands is a ship docking or arriving.

Six of Swords………….Six of Swords, come to think of it, is another ship. This one is leaving at the moment, but its meaning presumes arriving in a promising way. It’s time to cut your losses and move on with Six of Swords. Things are going to be better when you get out of here, and you’re on your way out already. Common meanings that are not immediately apparent for Six of Swords are ‘avoid,’ ‘give up on,’ ‘travel over water,’ ‘go overseas,’ and ‘not anymore.’ Watch this Tarot card show up for Rehab too, as in ‘get out of that life’ and ‘head in another better direction.’

Some meanings are about ‘quit being’ rather than leaving. There’s a defeatist strain too, like ‘gave up on.’ Watch for it to indicate timing sometimes, along the line of ‘things get better after.’ Some others are: withdrawal, drifting apart, gradual improvement, ‘let bygones be bygones,’ and recovery or getting over anything. It can even say ‘skip town.’
