LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING and

               LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

.………..………. .……..…….. Once again we have a spread in which one card equals the other two. This tends to make the messages very focused, of course. One of Eight of Swords’ main meanings is ‘impossible’ and Three of Pentacles is people dealing with something, making a successful outcome together. Strength is dealing with a difficult or impossible situation, and solving it or overcoming it. So Three of Pentacles + Eight of Swords = Strength. (I love these equations. I had a lot of them saved, over decades, that were lost when my home and business were destroyed.) When Eight of Swords is meaning ‘impossible,’ one of the very best cards to have is Strength, who handles the impossible easily.

Our main communication here is overcoming impossible situations by dealing with them, and by getting together with other people and working out a solution to those insurmountable problems. Strength is ‘can do’ and Three of Pentacles is ‘we get it done together as a team, while Eight of Swords refers to the stuck place, the thing that just can’t. Note that the troublesome situation need not be just another person (or group): “Trading is suspended – deal with it!” is one example of that.

Eight of Swords is the star card (card the others all relate to the most) in this spread. You will see that if you just scan the sentences.

Semantics. When ‘fix’ is ‘the fix we are in,’ it’s Eight of Swords. When ‘fix’ is fixing the problem, well, it’s Strength. Sometimes there’s a delicate balance between meanings of cards and semantics.

Three of Pentacles…… Three of Pentacles is getting together to get something done – getting together in any kind of relationships: friends, business transactions, business teams, a chance meeting, a love relationship, a meeting of lovers (often a date, or a sexual liaison), a negotiation of a contract, a plea bargain or motions hearing in court, putting heads together, a joint enterprise, agreeing or making an agreement, and more. Three of Pentacles is about each party doing his or her part, fair and square. It is a fairness and a justice card. You can count on Three of Pentacles to be a meeting of three people. To a lesser extent – but still reliably – Three of Cups means three people together, too.

With all of these general meanings, you would think Three of Pentacles would be a challenge to apply. It isn’t. It ‘shows up with bells on,’ usually, regarding where it fits in. And show up it does! – Three of Pentacles appears very frequently, whereas Eight of Swords lies low in the deck unless you ask about one of its pet words and phrases.

Eight of Swords……..    Eight of Swords is tied up. You know how people say ‘I’m tied up in a meeting’ or ‘My hands are tied’? That’s it. Eight of Swords’ main translate is ‘can’t.’ It means stuck, stymied, stifled, cramped, contained, prevented from, shut down, frozen, dead to, suffocated, ineffective, boxed in, unable (including disabilities), void, defunct, and any such word or phrase – even the prefix ‘un.’ Eight of Swords’ second most frequent translate is ‘impossible.’

Now, the ‘can’t’ of Eight of Swords can be what I call ‘can’t-itis.’ That’s when people say ‘I can’t’ and they mean – usually obviously – ‘I don’t want to’ or ‘I ain’t gonna.’

The idea that ‘can’t’ isn’t really that is expressed in this illustration. We have an uninjured woman, surrounded by heavy swords barely stuck in wet ground, loosely blindfolded and loosely tied, standing alone, far from the nearest building, in daylight. Sometimes we feel stuck when we haven’t tested the binding.

.

Strength……… Strength is experienced (in the Jimi Hendrix sense of the word). Strength is having the moxie (wisdom + nerve) to foresee potential intrusion and interference, and to head it off deftly (skilfully and quietly) without a fuss. Strength is making the people who want to get in your way like you instead, because you can handle them. You could say Strength charms the foe. If you have power that would-be bullies can sense (smell!), they put the same effort into mollifying you that they would into attacking.

Strength is a spiritual adept. The symbol above her head is about eternity and infinity (in math – repeating decimals that fractions like 1/3 make). She shuts the mouth of the predator, the lion, with her bare hands, and makes him purr at her touch, when he came there to roar it up. And she does all this is a long white dress with flowers on it. (Can you say ‘pussy-whipped’?)

So Strength is solving problems, preventing trouble, handling anything diplomatically, a skillful handler, hands-on (which Eight of Pentacles also is about), putting the quietus on, and controlling or being controlling. Yes, Strength can be an assertive dame. Strength is very similar to Chariot: Chariot would be Strength’s soulmate – and what a pair they would make!

.

.

.

Think. Think back. There was a time when you rose to the occasion and settled some social situation that had you tied in knots. Other people in that transaction went along with what you said and did. Often, it is a small act, a short remark, that ‘does it.’ Now, put that move of yours into your ‘violet box,’ the secret place in your psyche where you store your personal treasures.

.

.
