Empress
Here’s that girly-girl, that glamour figure or beauty queen. She exudes femininity in that slinky robe of hers. How many hints do we need?: There’s a valentine with the symbol for female on it by her chair. She lounges outdoors on luxurious cushions, her hair done just so. Princessy. Definitely well-kept and can be wealthy. She is surrounded by growing things – wheat, even. (She is pregnant; and Empress is the card for that.)
Empress is all the fertility goddesses rolled into one figure. She is Lady Bountiful, associated with comfort, the good life, being the beloved, being spoiled … and being a resource.
So Empress can be the laid-back gal who’s easy to be with, or she can be the beauty queen type. She can be that casual girl in shorts at her favorite bar who calls all the men honey and is totally at ease at all times, or she can be the Princess, the difficult dame. She can also be the ideal woman or the slut (or both, I guess).
Another side to Empress is her Lady Bountiful mode: She is the resource for other people. She provides what the people around her lack – whatever it is. The woman at the office who’s everyone’s dictionary.
Four of Pentacles
He sits in a deserted street staring straight ahead holding onto his money for dear life, and holding onto himself. He is numb, and he seems to be a castaway from that town behind him. Sky is flat gray.
(1) Keeping to himself and keeping ‘it’ to himself and (2) being short (often of money) are Four of Pentacles most common themes. Today’s main one refers to not enough money.
Keeping a secret is one of Four of Pentacles main applications. Four of Pentacles means ‘deep down inside’ and is also keeping to yourself socially.
Four of Pentacles is not one of the easy-to-read Rider Waite Tarot cards in Tarot Verbatim. It means contradictory things, and it has a lot of branches to its meaning tree – but here we discuss only the ones that count for today’s readings. Four of Pentacles is no anchor card; you look to the others to see how this one fits into the message.
For example, Four of Pentacles can be broke or short of money; can be clinging onto money in a tight budget; can be a cheapskate; can be hiding money. Just remember ‘possessive.’ And remember to look at surrounding cards (and your question).
Four of Pentacles can be in denial, or can have deeply held feelings and/or beliefs. He can be shutting out, or shutting in – good way to remember this one.
Four of Pentacles can be an insider (knowing the secret) or an outsider (outside of town, alone, sitting in the street).

Ten of Cups is everything Four of Pentacles is not. Everybody’s happy, everybody’s a member; it’s a fine community. Ten of Cups’ other common meanings are about being happy (one big happy family; happily ever after), being married, being a couple, living in the same house, a house, a home, a family, the good people, the good life. Empress
Although some of her meanings are apparent, it helps to know the backstory of Empress. This figure is a composite of all the fertility goddesses, and represents therefore the sexy woman – whether as the ideal woman or the slut – and Empress is the card for a pregnant woman.
Empress represents ‘the feminine principle’ as the 3, esoterically. Think abundance, think the spring growth. Think the beloved, the diva, the spoiled woman, the richly talented resourceful woman who is … a resource. Think The Babe. Think the spoiled beauty who has nothing to do but look gorgeous: She is relaxed, easygoing.
Page of Wands
And here is the male counterpart of Empress: His life has been easy, and he is fitting easily into whatever his social setting is to be, and is. And just as Empress is the attractive woman, Page of Wands is the attractive man – and both are associated with sexual charisma and being sexy. Page of Wands can be a flirt, even. The good-looking fellow ‘of good family,’ respectable and polished: well-dressed and well-spoken.

She’s all about female sexuality, whether from the perspective of the female or her ‘admirers.’ Just remember, this Tarot card rolls all the fertility goddesses into one entity. Fertility goddesses are the ideal woman and are the slut, and are always pregnant. Empress represents the vamp or diva and also represents the passive-victim ladies. Empress is the Jezebel or diva or femme fatale, and Empress is his dream girl, trophy woman, ideal woman … whatever. A physically gorgeous dame as the perpetrator or as the victim, really. Empress is also the goddess and the inner goddess.

Think of Ace of Wands as the Herd Bull if you know your animal husbandry (interesting phrase, that!)

So Ace of Swords, without feedback from the other Tarot cards or the question (or the story that has already developed), can tell you that you win … or that you lost. Moon
Moon card has much in common, in Tarot Verbatim™, with Devil: It means just about anything awful. Why? See those two towers? – they are actual landmarks in an actual place in Greco-Roman times that was the border to hell, and to ‘dragons live here.’ Yes, hell is a Greco-Roman concept. Why else? – the lobster, colored purple, is undertaking a land journey, and the dog and coyote (enemies) are palling together. Not to mention the moon is frowning on the scene! So this is why Moon isn’t just another pretty Tarot face, at least in Tarot Verbatim.
Today these ‘bad’ translates for Moon are: trouble, terrible, a bad time, peril, difficult, problem, terrifying thing, terrible place, nightmare, bad, evil, been through hell, my dark side, revenge, disease, obsession, worst.
Why else? – Moon is the Left-hand Path, a/k/a The Road to Hell. (Ace of Pentacles is the Right-hand Path.) The Left-hand Path is the wrong way, the evil way, esoterically – hence the wrong road. Hence, being lost. So Moon stands for mistake, blunder, and wrong, wherever those concepts fit in, in the story you inquire about.
But Moon has its bright side. It means inspiration. It is psychic work, psychic experiences. It is about the spirit world, and not just the bad side of it.

These three cards have strong links along one story line: Empress is the sexy lady (the beautiful lady, trophy woman, dream girl, vamp, diva, Jezebel, etc.). Ace of Wands is sex and the male sexual drives. Moon is the twisted bad side of things. So we could have a sexually perverted vamp gal (but I did not go there). Moon means trouble, difficulty, problems; and Ace of Wands (with the Sexy Woman introducing it) means sex or sexual. So, trouble with sex, sexual problems, or even sexual perversion. A more common phrase Ace of Wands and Moon make is ‘absolutely wrong.’
The story equally applies to the problems a sexy beautiful woman (Empress) has with things sexual (Ace of Wands), or to the problems the male (Ace of Wands) has regarding things sexual with the beautiful sexy woman (Empress). So, depending upon the Question and the established story, the female or the male can be the bad-guy, the perp, in this spread. Empress
Empress is one of those cards you see less often as a rule. The beautiful woman category predominates, since Empress is all the goddesses of love and fertility rolled into one. Its other meanings apply awkwardly, and don’t apply across the board, either. She is so womanly that when Empress means, say, ‘comfortable,’ it’s still a woman being comfortable – not a social scene or some other general application. The deck could do without this card, really, because with as few meanings as it has, some of them are contradictory. Famously, she can be the ideal woman or the slut. Fertility goddesses, of course, are both.
Four of Cups
You look at Four of Cups and know what it means. He is unwillingness personified. He wants no part of, he refuses, he denies adamantly. No way! – it’s not coming near me. Get that out of my face. He can be holding out against temptation, he can be refusing to cooperate or participate or do something. He disallows. He refuses to believe, to do, to be. Don’t ask again – how many times do I have to tell you? The fellow averts his head, crosses both arms and legs, as one after another offer is made. In his present company with Hanged Man today, he says ‘I don’t believe’ in various ways.
Hanged Man
Hanged Man takes a back seat today to get along with his table-mates. Today he is turned on by Empress, the sexy woman; and today he is disbelieving something because of Four of Cups. (Hanged Man is understanding and ‘getting it,’ which is about belief; Four of Cups disses that to make ‘disbelief.’) Those are normal applications for him but not dominant ones. Death
Death’s illustration shows the dead king on the ground, the grieving family kneeling, the bishop’s possessing the crown to bestow upon the next head of state, death personified in black armor carrying a black flag with an emblem of a rose. Despite all this, Tarot Verbatim™ persists in using this Tarot card strictly as any negative modifier at all, and meaning ‘the end.’ Since Tarot Verbatim’s™ meanings are strictly derived from experience – field trials, you could say – there’s no arguing with this. Just be aware other systems vary from Tarot Verbatim’s™.
Ace of Pentacles
Ace of Pentacles depicts the idea that goodness is rewarded, that being on the right path brings money. Hmmm. You see the right path in gold, very straight and narrow, lilies (purity) to begin, and a huge arbor of roses (victory) to end. In case you don’t get THAT, a hand with a pile of gold coins is suspended over said gold path. In real life, Ace of Pentacles is money, being correct or right, the right path, a road (any kind), reward or credit, and ‘yes.’
Fool
Fool’s illustration bears some explanation. This young person skips to cliff edge, not looking where he is going, his dog prancing along. He is on a trip on foot with only a small purse, no provisions for him or the dog, and carries a white rose (purity, spirituality) in his hand. (He should meet Queen of Cups.) Fool is the zero, which suggests ‘nothing’ and being a place holder rather than having a real presence.
Fool means ‘to be free of’ and even ‘to be not there’ or absent. It can translate ‘nothing’ or ‘having no.’ The underlying idea is that a person who lives in spiritual reality is oblivious to physical hazards, and is exempt from their harm. (Do not try this at home.)

Ace of Pentacles is being on the right track or path, success, money, what’s right or correct; and it means ‘yes’ as the first self card in a Celtic Cross spread. Fool and Death together are tricky because in Tarot Verbatim™ Death is any negative modifier and Fool often means a lack of something since it means to be free, and therefore ‘to be free of’ anything. Death is an end and Fool is a start (since it is the zero). Although most Tarot systems consider death a change – ‘The king is dead, long live the king,’ don’t expect that in Tarot Verbatim.
Ace of Pentacles exemplifies the idea that being good is rewarded, that goodness is associated with money. You see the straight path in gold, lilies at its beginning (purity) and a rose arbor of victory at its end. In case you don’t get THAT point, a hand with gold in it is over the gold path. In use, Ace of Pentacles’ most common meanings are: money, to pay or receive it; being on track or on the path; right and correct; a road, literally; and being rewarded or getting credit for something.
Death is any negative modifier, and it means ‘the end’ or ‘ends up.’ The times it does translate ‘death,’ either death is the subject of the inquiry, or it does not refer to a death that would bring grief, often meaning the death of a thought or a thing. Usually, you see this Tarot card being: no, not, isn’t, can’t, don’t, won’t, and such words, and never. Death is what you love to have in a spread that has a ‘bad card’ because it makes, say, Ten of Swords, mean ‘not a disaste
Fool today is about freedom, not caring, and ‘no reason’ mainly, today.
The illustration bears some explanation. He is on a foot journey without provisions for himself or the dog. He is not looking where he is going, and is about to skip off a cliff.
As I pointed out, you see negative words in Fool’s very positive vocabulary – things like ‘for no reason,’ ‘doesn’t remember,’ being unaware,’ ‘doesn’t know’ and ‘have no idea,’ ‘not there,’ ‘not the one,’ ‘without,’ and ‘isn’t about to.’
When Fool gets together with Death, this makes a reader trip over Death as a negative modifier. A double negative is a positive in English but not in the romance languages – don’t know how that would work out in those – but in English, sometimes you have to do a double take, retrace, look at surrounding cards (if any) to understand what the sentence is telling you.
Fool and Death, when their meanings blend peacefully, say ‘not free,’ ‘don’t forget,’ ‘can’t ignore,’ ‘not openminded,’ ‘no fear of death,’ ‘the subconscious is not,’ and ‘I don’t care how it ends.
Death and Ace of Pentacles is of course ‘not the right way’ and ‘wasn’t on the road. The main thing you expect when these two get together is ‘not correct’ and ‘don’t have the money.’
Ace of Pentacles and Fool are most likely to bring up not caring about paying, being paid, or money. They also mean ‘don’t care if I am (or it is, or someone else is) correct.’ With Ace of Pentacles being reward or ‘getting the credit for,’ these two say ‘Don’t care if I get credit for it’ or ‘not expecting to be reimbursed.’
Note that both Ace of Pentacles and Fool share the concept of being ‘on the right path.’ Fool stresses living in the spirit, living unconsciously (or subconsciously, in the spirit), not paying attention to what people refer to as ‘the cares of this world.’

Empress
Empress is one of those cards you see less often as a rule. The beautiful woman category predominates, since Empress is all the goddesses of love and fertility rolled into one. Its other meanings apply awkwardly, and don’t apply across the board, either. She is so womanly that when Empress means, say, ‘comfortable,’ it’s still a woman being comfortable – not a social scene or some other general application. The deck could do without this card, really, because with as few meanings as it has, some of them are contradictory. Famously, she can be the ideal woman or the slut. Fertility goddesses, of course, are both.
Four of Cups
You look at Four of Cups and know what it means. He is unwillingness personified. He wants no part of, he refuses, he denies adamantly. No way! – it’s not coming near me. Get that out of my face. He can be holding out against temptation, he can be refusing to cooperate or participate or do something. He disallows. He refuses to believe, to do, to be. Don’t ask again – how many times do I have to tell you? The fellow averts his head, crosses both arms and legs, as one after another offer is made. In his present company with Hanged Man today, he says ‘I don’t believe’ in various ways.
Hanged Man
Hanged Man takes a back seat today to get along with his table-mates. Today he is turned on by Empress, the sexy woman; and today he is disbelieving something because of Four of Cups. Fool
Fool has many and miscellaneous meanings; it’s the most ambiguous of all cards. Today, in the company of one card about stress and one about relaxation, Fool is mostly using its ‘oh never mind’ category of meanings. Fool doesn’t know, doesn’t care, isn’t (whatever) … heck, fool isn’t even there!
Fool also means both ignore and be oblivious to. It means assume and it means guess.
Fool is also a young spirit, a free spirit. ‘Let up on it already,’ it says today.
The picture shows a young person skipping away on a journey with next to no provisions, with his fluffy white dog companion, who is about to skip off the cliff with him. Although this is ‘God protects fools and drunks’ sometimes, Fool is really about the idea that spiritual people live charmed lives. Don’t try this at home.

Nine of Wands
Nine of Wands guards a turf that is subject to invasion, and feels apprehensive, threatened or intimidated. He has already been wounded, and fears a return of the invaders. So Nine of Wands is about hanging in there in a bad situation. Key words are: nervous, uneasy, anxious, fears, dread, stress, challenge, pressure, have to live with it.
Nine of Wands is defense, and translates ‘defense’ even in legal contexts (like a defense attorney). Feeling defensive, feeling accused, and being accused – either by oneself or by others – belongs to Nine of Wands.
Empress
Really, all you need to know about Empress is that this card is the synthesis of all the fertility goddesses that ever were. So Empress is beautiful, sexy, pregnant, the ideal woman and the slut – and she has a life of ease and luxury. The story in the picture is: She is the beloved of a wealthy man who keeps her in utmost comfort while she is pregnant.

Empress is pregnant (Fertility goddesses are always pregnant.) so these three cards could be about a problem pregnancy, with a fellow being accused and put on the spot, Nine of Wands, and denying all, Fool – even claiming ‘I wasn’t there,’ which is one of Fool’s meanings. Temperance
Temperance has a working title in the back of my mind: equal intimate partners. A close working relationship – complete with responding, complete with dialog (talking). Temperance can translate ‘we,’ meaning two are one.
‘Together’ is a key word for Temperance: We are together on this; we got together; standing next to someone; we are on the same side.
Relationship is also Temperance’s key word, and it is any kind of real actual well-intentioned one at all – whether it be social, business, friends or lovers. (Yes, Temperance assures this is a trustworthy partner, a good relationship. Unless there’s a treachery card to impugn that.)
Temperance means deal and dealing – and again, in any category of life. It specifically means direct contact, which can tell you ‘reports directly to’ in a business question. Temperance and Emperor, for instance say ‘reports directly to the head man,’ whoever that is in the subject at hand.
Today, next to Empress, with the emotional Five of Cups’ influence, Temperance is about lovers – and friends of lovers.
Five of Cups
Five of Cups is one of those self-explanatory cards. It’s obviously about mourning and about a loss. It’s obviously feeling awful, and so it means depression even when the story doesn’t include a loss.
Five of Cups also means waste (the spilled wine). It is about regretting the past, and about being haunted by and maybe even obsessed with the past. We get this from the fact the black-robed figure turns its (his?) back on the full cups, and contemplates only the spilled one. That same spilled wine makes Five of Cups one of the cards that signifies alcoholism or a hangover, and it can join other cards to mean quitting drinking.
Empress
Empress is a woman, a good-looking woman, a prosperous woman.
See the female sign, and the heart-shaped shield that also meant female in ancient times? (It is actually a lewd representation of a woman’s butt from a bending-over position, at least for the Celts.) Empress is so female she can translate ‘she’ any day.
I can explain the spread of the types of woman Empress embraces – so many she is meaningless in herself: Empress is an amalgamation of all the fertility goddesses rolled into one. So she is the pregnant woman, the ideal woman, the sexpot or slut, the beauty, the kept woman, the spoiled or well-off woman, that vixen, and the resource. The ‘resource’ does not have to be a person; it can be a general word.
Empress is one of the cards you look to near the end of figuring out your sentence; not an anchor card.
