GUIDANCE         Hidden factors to rewards and penalties are our documentary today. What the wind is to sailboats, these factors are to humankind. Factors we don’t acknowledge out of some unspoken treaty we have with our kind, some herd consciousness. ‘You just don’t do that’ we say to those few people who have a tin ear about these treaties. But they do that. And they largely exempt themselves from both the penalties and the rewards of our mass consciousness schemes. Those different drummer people, you know – we have some superstitious fear of them; they don’t play by the rules – they are not in the game or ‘have no skin in the game.’ They are the ones who aren’t into ‘It’s not what you know but who you know.’ Favoritism reduces one person’s income, and others take advantage of being disadvantaged. Keeping a guilty secret and being rewarded for it; keeping double books is profitable; keeping a lover or partner because of income connection. And then there’s such an attachment to money itself that a person is a cheapskate, unaware of the larger penalties one pays for that.

Hidden factors as gain – and hidden factors as loss – are all around each of us like wind is around sailboats.

………………………     Both Four of Pentacles and Two of Cups are about secrets, hiding something, something to hide – hidden factors. And both Four of Pentacles and Two of Cups are about attachment. Both Four of Pentacles and Two of Cups are about greed, the ‘mine’ thing.

Four of Pentacles has a financial application of being short of money, budgeting, and being stingy – along with its ‘keeping quiet about it’ meanings.

You can think of Two of Cups as an undercurrent, as background. Above the couple in the illustration is a caduceus, a spirit entity that interferes in physical matters and affairs. It is this part of the illustration that creates Two of Cups’ main meaning of an undeclared or hidden factor affecting transactions between humans. There’s something you are unaware of that influences you. ‘Something is up’ or ‘Something is afoot.’ Two of Cups is the hidden persuasion (sales pitch, seduction, propaganda, bribe, promise, lie, pretense, etc.) that induces someone to go along with the program. Two of Cups applies not just to romance but to any social interaction, any deal or exchange involving self-interest. It says ‘something else is going on here.’

The remaining card, Three of Wands, enriches Four of Pentacles’ financial aspect, makes it apply more to profit than to being short of cash (money coming in via Three of Wands), and puts our stories’ focus on future events and on continuing factors.

Together, these three cards cover hidden factors, therefore, as both liabilities and assets.

…………………………..    Four of Pentacles is holding on for dear life; is keeping a secret; is internal or deeply felt issues; is lacking money or something else; is attached, needy or clingy. Every little factor in the stylized illustration can apply, and some of them are easy to overlook. Like this: He is outside of a town, his back to it, sitting in the road staring vacantly ahead, so he is ostracized from the town. He is hugging himself: feeling guilty, sulking, a hug itself, lacks love, insecure, and deeply felt. Clinging to money is obvious, and makes several branches, from budgeting and bookkeeping applications, to being broke, to being a miser or a cheapskate, to hiding money or something else. Clinging to money suggests lack generally, which brings in a deficit, shortage, which brings up being inferior, or feeling inferior. Staring ahead and hugging yourself suggests numbness. He is cowering (sort of) in the picture, and this cringing aspect sometimes outs, in readings. Here are the phrases for today for Four of Pentacles:

                        .                Three of Wands has money coming in, a cash flow, an income to depend on: His ships come in based on what has already been done. They will continue to come in too. These are the meanings of Three of Wands – easy. Three of Wands can mean ‘future,’ and can put your spread into future tense. It also brings up words like ongoing and continual, foreseeable … and always. Watch for that ‘always.’ Three of Wands doesn’t just apply to income and cash flow but is general encouragement and reassurance: It refers generally to good things ahead, not only ‘things’ but also a good outlook or prognosis generally about feelings, situations and circumstances, personal development, growth of plants … anything and everything.

……………...………….. Two of Cups shows a couple getting engaged. That was – back in the bad old days – a formal public announcement, called ‘pledging your troth,’ and it was actionable in law if the fellow did not marry the girl, because she was considered ‘used’ and ‘no man would have her.’ Which was true. Unmarried women who got pregnant just killed themselves or went on long mysterious vacations.

Above the couple in the illustration is a caduceus, a spirit entity that interferes in physical matters and affairs, an entity magicians use for spells and to create events. You see it in Bible history more than once, notably when Moses used it to keep people from being bitten by snakes. Moses, as a high-ranking Egyptian prince, was trained as a magician. It is this part of the illustration that creates Two of Cups’ main meaning of an undeclared or hidden factor affecting transactions between humans. There’s something you are unaware of that affects you. ‘Something is up’ or ‘Something is afoot.’ Good or bad or indifferent.

(Now I am going into more of Two of Cups various applications than we are using today … for no particular reason.)

Two of Cups applies not just to romance but to any social interaction, any deal or exchange involving self-interest. It says ‘something else is going on here.’ It is about influence, frequently … including being ‘under the influence’ of a belief or a substance.

Two of Cups has a conspiracy application that these hidden factors are controlling influences that are undeclared, or that you are dealing with undisclosed parties – often that the environment is adverse but not openly hostile, but sometimes that you have support you don’t know about. (You won’t find this meaning for Two of Cups in other Tarot systems. In Tarot Verbatim, a cheating relationship is the romantic application for Two of Cups; it is a love relationship in ‘most other systems.)

Two of Cups is also about being deceived (or deceiving), about being tricked (or tricking), about propaganda and sales pitches (bullshitting or being bullshitted). It is about the pretense for a purpose, usually gain or to hurt (sting) someone. It is also the card for prostitution, and seduction. Pretense is usually involved in all of its application: It even sometimes simply means the ‘face’ sort of pretense that is fairly normal and okay.

Two of Cups is about ‘bloodsuckers,’ about energy suckers that drain you when you are around them (a/k/a vampires), and is about ‘users,’ people that use you – because, again, of the caduceus: a spirit that gains energy by interfering in human affairs. (Black magic is based upon siccing those critters on other people, in a nutshell.)

This Two of Cups is a very general card with very widespread influence, itself. I have tried to give you an encompassing overview of its spectrum.

He is outside of the town, perched on something in a road (or parking lot?) under a stark gray flat sky. This illustration gives rise to a number of otherwise unrelated meanings.

About those deep feelings: internal, deeply felt, secret feeling, feeling guilty, sulking, insecure, cowering or cringing, numb.

About holding onto the coins: lacking money, being disadvantaged, budget, broke, greedy, deadbeat, possessive.
