Magician – Magician is an anchor card par excellence. Conjugate (put all their forms in order of their pronouns) the verbs do and make, along with all the singular male pronouns plus ‘I,‘ including the possessive ones. Add forms of ‘act,’ including ‘action.’ And ‘deeds,’ which is close. then all you have to keep in mind is that Magician starts, initiates (takes initiative), and volunteers. And you got it. Think ‘male who takes action’ for its slogan in the back of your mind.
.
If parts-of-speech is not your forte (your thing), here’s what all that expresses: Magician is about what a guy does, makes, starts, and it also includes ‘I.’ (The identity cards also have this characteristic of meaning the verb, the pronoun, or the verb plus the pronoun. Example: Page of Pentacles is ‘he,’ ‘thinks,’ or ‘he thinks.’ Magician is like that too.
.
Here is an example of all the forms of ‘do’ that Magician uses here today:
to do
getting something done
All you need do is
Doing
What to do
You do
what you do
Someone who has been there and done that
for what he does
for what he did
to be done
for what I did
.
And here’s how and why Magician comes to mean these things: He is the ‘1.’ Esoterically, ‘1’ is male and is active, and it starts the action. So Magician is ‘he’ and his words are about taking action and taking the initiative. (If you are curious about this, I read it in Dion Fortune’s writings – and she’s a good clear occult writer, of which there are few.
Hermit – You are looking at an old monk who (by his garb/clothing) is a medical doctor who’s out on the road seeking people to help with food, a warm bed in his monastery, and good advice because he is so wise.
.
All kinds of words for virtues apply to him because he is a monk and because he is looking to help his fellow human. Here are his key words, the ones we use today: [MEDICAL, DOCTOR, COUNSELOR, GOOD ADVICE]; [LOOK FOR, FIND, SEE, SEEK]; [WISE]; [SOBER]; [TRUTH, FACTS]; [VIRTUES (honest, live simply, patience, help]; [OLD MAN, ELDER].
Six of Pentacles – This is a simple card with complicated applications – but only if you think of it that way! You are looking at an exchange between the workers and the person who employed them. Boss is weighing the money to make sure they get what’s due them. Remember, this is an exchange, so the card is about giving and/or about receiving, as well as about a transaction. It is also about giving and getting other things than money, especially respect and attention. And the attention includes medical attention even when Hermit, the doctor, isn’t around to reinforce that. Along the lines of its ‘medical attention’ meanings, the coins going from one hand to the other ends up representing the spread of germs and also dispensing meds for the treatment.
.
Easily overlooked is that these same coins falling one at a time into the worker’s hands brings phrases about ‘one at a time’ and ‘piecemeal.’ Not exactly the ‘repeated action’ of Eight of Pentacles but similar to it.
The scales the employer holds makes Six of Pentacles a card about justice and fairness. And that attracts the word ‘right,’ so Six of Pentacles is not just treating people right but doing the right thing.
.

…………..…………. …………………….
. Hermit is a doctor, and Six of Pentacles is medical treatment, is the spread of germs, and is prescribing or dispensing pills or other treatment (as well as being prescribed them and receiving them, of course). . Both Hermit and Six of Pentacles show honest people, honest men.
.
Both Magician and Hermit are male persons who are taking initiative taking action.
.
Hermit is understanding and seeing things as they are. Magician is doing something about it. Six of Pentacles is an exchange with another person or other people, doing the right thing(s) or treating those people right. (Note that – as sometimes happens – Six of Pentacles is ‘ doing the right thing(s)’ and Magician is ‘ doing things,’ so together they still just say ‘ doing the right things.’ So the basic story these three cards tell is ‘ Intelligently do the right thing with your fellow humans.’
.
These three cards say ‘ Make a charitable donation.‘ ‘ Make’ is Magician; ‘ charitable’ is Hermit; ‘ donation’ is Six of Pentacles.
….. MAGICIAN AND HERMIT combine doing and knowing, and are about acting wisely or intelligently. They are about making yourself do the right thing, getting yourself sober, advice from someone who is experienced ( Magician as ‘ been there and done that’), honesty in action, what an old man does, understand how to do, volunteering to help, and even starting treatment.
.
.. MAGICIAN AND SIX OF PENTACLES combine payment with action. They say ‘ get what you deserve for what you do,’ and are about doing the right thing, paying the bills, being rewarded for what you do, getting paid for what you do, paying a fine for what you did, and doing what it takes to get something.
.
. HERMIT AND SIX OF PENTACLES are both focused on helping other people, being fair and honest and giving, and they say ‘ honest wages’ and ‘ being paid fairly’ and ‘ helping to pay.’ Giving good advice, wise advice, too. Giving the facts or imparting wisdom. Finding a way to pay, be paid, or make a payment. They are also about respecting elders, and patience being rewarded. Since both these cards have medical applications, they say ‘medical treatment’ too.

Magician – Today’s readings are a great example of how Magician gets swallowed up by other cards’ meanings because Magician means: do, start, make, initiate or initiative. Those words are inferred in the meanings of some other cards. Today Magician and Eight of Cups are about not doing something or not doing it anymore. Today Magician and Six of Pentacles are about the doing of: paying bills, treating other people right, giving respect or attention, doing ‘it’ right.
.
Magician in Rider Waite represents the active principle, represents the doing (not the thinking or anything else, just action). Refer to the two-card combination parts at the end of this post to see how Magician gets swallowed up in the action that other cards specify the nature of.
Eight of Cups – A pilgrim, the story here is, detours around a mountain, going out of his way. The pilgrim will resume his direction once past the obstacle, and bear in mind Eight of Cups sometimes means that.
.
Eight of Cups is on a journey: He has left but has not arrived. That is true of Six of Swords as well. But Six of Swords’ journey is going from one place to another directly, and Eight of Cups encounters a disruption, goes off the road (in any sense), or aborts course. Eight of Cups is leaving, quitting, dropping out, walking away, not showing up (A. W. O. L.).
.
Look for Eight of Cups to mean a change. Look for it to mean ‘on the road’ or traveling. It is one of several cards that mean to switch from one to another or to switch direction.
.
Eight of Cups means to drop out, as well as to go out of your way, two opposite things.
.
Eight of Cups also means a disruption or interruption.
.
So Eight of Cups has odd meanings. It is not an anchor card; you fit it into the others, usually. The beginning and ending moon phases can mean things like: a month, ‘burning the midnight oil,’ dusk, twilight. You get a feel for what this card is talking about, with experience. (If you are looking for exhaustive meanings for this Eight of Cups fellow, Google ‘Eight of Cups Tarot Verbatim’ and the archives will spill all. Be sure to click on the ‘more’ after the usual six or so beginning items.)
.
In its present company, Eight of Cups is acting as a negator (negative modifier), which isn’t its usual function.
Six of Pentacles – He has some scales and the coins he pays them with for what they do for him. Treating people right and doing the right thing are major portions of Six of Pentacles’ meanings. The point is fairness because he is going by the weight of the gold that’s left in the coins rather than the face value. Six of Pentacles is a fair exchange; is commerce; is a paycheck or labor expense. It is also the card for making payments.
.
An exchange involves both giving and receiving, of course. And the scales bring justice into the dictionary of Six of Pentacles.
.
This exchange extends to paying attention, giving respect and getting it, and getting what is deserved (either way). The act of dropping the coins into the hands of other people, along with the fact Six of Pentacles is about ‘treating’ people fairly, stretches this card to dispensing medicines and treating people medically. Six of Pentacles translates ‘treatment.’
.
.
.
.
LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES
. ….. .. ..
Magician tends to fade into the meaning of other cards when they are talking about doing something, so that Magician’s ‘ do’ phrase is extraneous. This makes Eight of Cups translate ‘ doesn’t,’ a negative modifier, which isn’t its real function. An action card ( Six of Pentacles in this case) modified by Eight of Cups ends up saying he isn’t paying, but the literal interpretation would be something like: ‘ What he is doing is, he is not (fill in the other card’s meaning – Six of Pentacles in this case).’ So ‘ isn’t paying his bills’ for Eight of Cups and Six of Pentacles … because we would not say ‘ what he is doing is not paying his bills.’ Eight of Cups means ‘ to avoid’ or ‘ avoiding,’ and it would be equally awkward, language-wise, to say ‘ What he is doing is avoiding paying.’ Eight of Cups says ‘ ain’t doin’ it’ with Magician, but Eight of Cups, as I said, isn’t really a negator … that’s not his job as a rule. It’s a matter of phrasing in English.
.
As a member of the justice Tarot tribe, Six of Pentacles may translate ‘ right’: treat me right, do what’s proper.
.
As a member of the financial Tarot tribe, Six of Pentacles may translate ‘affordable,’ ‘for that price,’ ‘pays off,’ ‘payback,’ ‘paycheck,’ and ‘pays me for that.’
.
Often the presence of Eight of Cups in a three-card spread makes conflicting stories because Eight of Cups is incompletion, and it can apply to either of the other two cards. In real-life Tarot practice, the question or other ‘knowns’ will supply how to interpret.
.
So Six of Pentacles is getting paid, Magician is doing it, and Eight of Cups can be about not getting paid or not doing it. See? Or getting paid for not doing.
.
The fairness theme of Six of Pentacles extends to legal proceedings: See the scales of justice there? The word ‘dispense’ is called up sometimes, and so is ‘ give,’ of course. The ‘ dispense’ and ‘ give’ meanings stretch to include prescription medications.
. ….. ..
.
NOW WITHOUT THE PICTURES
Magician tends to fade into the meaning of other cards when they are talking about doing something, so that Magician’s ‘do’ phrase is extraneous. We are talking also about the change that is about things beginning to happen: doing something about not paying bills on time; just doing it with no thought of reward; starting medical treatment and what a nice change; going out of your way to do the right thing, or take the initiative.

GUIDANCE Right and wrong, reward and punishment: they aren’t hooked up so that good deeds are rewarded, and vice versa. We are here to report that good deeds do get punished, and cheaters graduate with honors. We confess we are paying for our mistake, have an expensive habit we are self-treating for, and are struggling to make some payments too. We observe that you get paid to do something wrong, and that you pay for the wrong things you do too. So today we are mentally unhitching those reward-and-punishment trailers.

.
Magician – Few and clear are Magician’s meanings. The only subtlety to Magician is that when you put him next to a card that translates into a verb, Magician – meaning to do, to act – is absorbed into the verb and will translate simply a pronoun (usually he, but myself, him, his, yourself, and even I, as well) to go along with that card. Note that, therefore, Magician can turn another card into verb form. Yeah, a subtlety.
.
Anyway, Magician is simple: male pronouns, any form of the verbs do and make and their synonyms (initiate, inaugurate, start up, begin, etc.). Magician also owns the noun action, so look for ‘take action.’ Magician also owns ‘he is the one who’ and ‘I am the one who’ – and that refers usually to doing something. So Magician and Ace of Cups can be ‘He loves you’ or ‘He is the one who loves you.’
.
Magician (along with Page of Pentacles and Page of Wands) can also translate ‘self.’ Today, with Six of Pentacles as ‘treatment,’ for instance, Magician makes that ‘self-treatment.’
Six of Pentacles – Giving and receiving, and what’s right and fair: These are the basic applications of Six of Pentacles. It’s an exchange in the illustration of money for labor, but anything that goes from one person to another is fair game for Six of Pentacles: attention, germs, information and medicines especially. ‘Treatment’ applies both as treatment for an illness or problem, and as the way you are being treated or treat another or others. Reward is also a Six of Pentacles concept. So is ‘deserve,’ along the lines of its fairness meanings.
.
While paychecks, paying bills, and paying for having other people do something are paramount in Six of Pentacles, it equally applies to budget, price (whether bargain or expensive, depending upon context), and phrases like ‘worth it,’ as in ‘worth the effort’ with, say, Five of Wands or Ten of Wands even. It is also the card in Rider Waite for paying what you owe and collecting what is owed you.
Devil – Here’s a pesky card to apply. Look at it last, it has so many divergent and unrelated meanings – and not all are bad news, either. But ‘wrong’ and ‘bad’ are frequent fliers on the Devil plane – and so is ‘mistake.’ Devil owns ‘hate’ and ‘dislike’ as well. Devil shows an attachment of a couple of naked people to Mr. Devil Himself, as Lovers shows the naked people under the watchful eye of a fairly funky angel. So Devil is malattachment or being attached to something that’s bad for you – hence, a habit as one of Devil’s meanings. Speaking of which, check out those grapes on the gal’s tail.
.
Today, besides the meanings discussed above, Devil appears as: mean things, punished, difficult, obligating yourself, immoral, crime, sick, breaks it, sex act, suffer.

Ste. Teresa d’Avila famously said in the book written only for her nuns, Way of Perfection, that we don’t complain about unfairness when it benefits us, only when it costs us. Today we meditate on this reward-punishment good-deed bad-deed brain teaser. Mindful of scenarios in which reward is dispensed for something wrong, or something done wrong, and in which punishment is dispensed to someone who is doing the right thing, or for a good deed.

GUIDANCE Fair exchanges are important in just about everything – attention, respect, paying fairly and receiving fairly, for starters. Credit and recognition for what we do often goes overlooked. But there’s a calculator in the back of ‘most everybody’s mind that keeps track of the ‘in’ and the ‘out’ for these things. It’s in the back of the mind, but directly tied to gut feelings: We feel gratified or we feel shortchanged, and those feelings weigh far more heavily than we give them credit for in the way we go about our business and our lives. We feel good about people who are careful or generous toward us, if we have any soul health at all. Resentment silently builds up, and so does gratitude. Pay attention, and you will see what we mean here … or feel what we mean here.

Magician – Two of Wands – Six of Pentacles
.
LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
………………. Two of Wands and Six of Pentacles both involve respect. That’s easy to overlook because Two of Wands has such a focus on future, security and money – but it means respectability along the lines of being the respected citizen. Six of Pentacles … well, showing and getting the proper attention and respect is one of its main applications.
Next, both Two of Wands and Six of Pentacles are about money. This part is even more pronounced, more obvious. Two of Wands is having the kind of money that makes you influential; Six of Pentacles is paying, receiving, and exchanging money – even cash.
……………………. Magician simply applies either and both of these exchanges to the actual doing of them, and assigns the action to a male at least sometimes.
Six of Pentacles is the dominant card here. The subjects of the reading follow its main categories of money and respect.
So now we go into money. Magician is what you do;
……………………. Six of Pentacles is getting paid for it;
…………………… and Two of Wands either moves it into the future or future tense, says ‘always’ and also can bring the money into savings or investments.
Keep in mind that when we say ‘getting paid for it,’ you could be the payer – not limited to being the receiver.
You know how deep down inside each of ourselves we disrespect that cheapskate who divides the dinner ticket to last menu item and to the penny? Our instinct tells us this is a test or expression of character, a litmus test, a visible sign of ‘who you really are.’ The cheapskate won’t let himself or herself realize this, and loses massive real estate of respect by the odd niggardly behavior. On the other hand, being magnanimous when you participate in this ritual makes oceans of respect for you. So one of you drank more alcohol, or ordered the hors d’oeuvres? – you still split the payment carelessly casually evenly.
This scene is a great example of how money and respect intersect in odd places. There are people who made or lost major commercial opportunities socially at a restaurant meeting. Today we remind ourselves that how we handle money affects how other people treat us and think of us.
.
Now we show where each of the phrases in each of the sentences comes from:

Magician……..Magician is the doer, the man of action – or the action itself. If you keep in mind that this card does mean to initiate or start (or even the beginning), but that its most frequent translates with be any form (Conjugate the verbs!) of do, make or bring down, bring about, you have most of Magician under your belt.
In addition to those trunks of its meaning tree, Magician is male. Very male meaning here (guy, fellow, man). Why? Because the esoteric underpinning of Rider Waite takes into account that the 1 – Magician’s number in the deck – reflects the male principle of action – which includes initiating. So Magician is any male pronoun. Magician refers to gender of an animal, of an unknown person who did something (often a crime), or of something unborn.
Magician is sometimes advice to do something, to act. It means willpower. Know that the action itself does not have to be performed by a male: Sometimes Magician refers to the act, not the actor. For example, Magician means ‘do it yourself,’ which is another way of saying ‘initiate action,’ isn’t it? Along this line, you also find among Magician’s male pronouns ‘yourself’ and ‘myself’ even if that refers to an entity that isn’t male gender.
Keep in mind that when there’s a negator card (like Death of Four of Cups), or one that means ‘not acting’ or ‘not participating’ (like Four of Swords), then Magician is saying ‘won’t’ or ‘don’t’ do anything about it, or ‘isn’t going to do it.’ Lastly keep in mind that Magician can say ‘start,’ in odd ways like Magician and Two of Wands (business) saying ‘start-up business.’
.
Two of Wands………….Two of Wands has only a bit part – only a supporting role – in today’s Tarot movie. It is making future tense, and it is blending with the money exchange theme and the respect theme of Six of Pentacles. Its ‘plan’ meaning includes doing something on purpose, which shows up here once too. That’s it. It’s good to spot which cards are the star players and which are the support: It saves time.
.
Six of Pentacles…..Six of Pentacles is about fairness (It is even one of the justice cards.) in a social or financial interaction. To pay your dues, to get the respect you deserve, to give someone what they are worth for what they do, and to get what you are worth for what you do – these are the core meanings of Six of Pentacles. This is the lead card for getting a paycheck, and for paying the bills. The fairness theme is expressed by the fact that the employer here is weighing the gold coins, and paying the help according to the actual gold in them, not what their face value is, because worn gold coins were worth less. Six of Pentacles is about paying attention and paying respect as well as paying money: That is an easy way to remember its main function.

GUIDANCE The Doing of Things, and the talk about doing those things, is our topic, and that’s an odd one, isn’t it? We get into the swing of doing, or not doing, or doing something in a certain way, and it’s like a performance. Some people talk on and on about what they are are going to do, some people talk at a person who is doing the work, and some of us want to be told step by step how to. Suggestion is made to do things that make you happy often. Then we remind ourselves of those people who can recount what they have done and make it funny – a comedy routine.

Now, Part Two,
Do you want to know a little, or a lot, about how this Tarot Verbatim™ thing works? If so,
*Go to Learn Tarot by Observing section below. This tells about the combined three pictures in the Tarot Readings – the pictures above here. It explains how these three cards get together in your mind to make the messages. HERE ARE PHRASES FOR ALL THREE 2-CARD COMBINATIONS is a stream-of-consciousness bridge to your subconscious if you use it regularly – people report.
*Go to Learn Tarot by Pictures. It is what each of the three cards, by itself, has to say. It shows you how that illustration makes that card’s meanings in today’s Spread. All the words of each Tarot card reading you see here are a phrase-by-phrase translation of the scene pictured on those cards: no filler, no psychic impressions, no spirit guide. Word-for-word Tarot Verbatim™.
You can put all this together and intuitively see yourself how Tarot Verbatim™ works.
This is a group reading, with no Questioner and no Question to limit what the cards say, so there’s more variety – even contradictions – and also the pronouns are more flexible. If it feels like it’s yours, and it says ‘he,’ and you’re a ‘she,’ feel free to adopt it anyway.

Two of Pentacles – Magician – Star
.
LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
.
………………….…………………. Both Two of Pentacles and Star can be performances. They both are upbeat: Two of Pentacles is silly and Star is feeling good all over. Magician is doing, making, male gender, initiation or starting or even volunteering. Since Two of Pentacles means ‘over and over,’ that makes Magician doing something over and over. Since Star means exuberant feeling and ‘tell,’ when it is with Magician it is telling everybody what you are doing. These simple things are our story today, that’s all.
………………………….. Two of Pentacles has a lot of meanings, held together by the elements of its illustration, a juggler dancing while he juggles his balls back and forth, up and down, in and out, round and round, an infinity sign around them to emphasize the ‘continuing on and on’ set of meanings. He is wearing a silly costume and a dunce cap. Waves with ships atop them precariously, in the background, bring up the instability meanings of Two of Pentacles.
………………………….. Magician is one of the blessedly simple cards you look to first when you look for the central theme of your layout (because cards with several meanings are less apparent as a theme). Magician represents the male principle, esoterically speaking, as the ‘1.’ That makes him mean active (on the physical plane) and receptive on the nonphysical ones. All forms of the verbs ‘do’ and ‘make’ belong to Magician, therefore. He also means (again as the ‘1,’ to begin or start, which is how ‘initiates’ and ‘voluntarily’ became his property.
………………………….. Star feels good all over as she sings in some ritual bath ceremony. Star is feeling good, singing, performing, talking (tell, say, speak, explain, promise, etc.) and is a shapely woman. Star is good health too: robust.
………..………….. Two of Pentacles and Magician Two of Pentacles and Magician say doing it over and over, or continuous action (repetitive action too). Two of Pentacles means silly or goofy, so these two Tarot cards in Tarot Verbatim™ describe doing something silly or acting goofy. They also mean the process of doing something – the routine activity. For example, he (Magician) keeps coming around (Two of Pentacles), in which two meanings of Two of Pentacles are used in combination: to keep, and ‘around.’ …
………..………….. Two of Pentacles and Star Two of Pentacles and Star suggest feeling good often, talking (Star) continuously or nonstop (Two of Pentacles) – like ‘telling you over and over.’ They also describe a comedy performance because both these cards are a performance, and Two of Pentacles can be a comic (the goofy and silly vein of meanings). Star is, of course, a singer. Star means any kind of speaking – hence, a speech that drones on when you put Two of Pentacles next to Star.
……………………… Magician and Star Magician and Star is doing what feels good. It is a magician performing too. Star and Magician are talking or telling others about what you are doing, as well as telling someone what or how to do something (or being told that).
The wellsprings of action. We do because it makes us feel good to. We do because we are told, and we tell others to do. Sometimes we only promise to, or say we will, though. Then there is the stellar performance when we do our very best in public.

LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES
Two of Pentacles……… Two of Pentacles I am repeating what I said about Two of Pentacles in Learn Tarot by Observing because it says it all well. Waves with ships atop them precariously, in the background, bring up the instability meanings of Two of Pentacles.
.
Magician…………. Magician as the male principle, the ‘1,’ will translate ‘he’ any old day, or ‘him’ of course. The male principle is to be active on the physical plan and receptive on the inner ones, so this Tarot card (in most any self-respecting deck) will mean action, act, do (conjugate that verb – all its forms), make (also conjugate it and use all its forms). Other meanings for Magician often are about being the initiator of action too: to volunteer, to start something, to be the first to do something.
.
Star………. Star reminds you of the Sixties mantra ‘If it feels good, do it.’ Star is that singing in the shower feeling as she performs a bath ritual outdoors. This is one of the communication (say, tell, speak, explain, promise, etc.) cards in Tarot Verbatim™.

Four Card Spreads, Our Daily Spread
Advice is making the distinction between being right and being moral, between being of good repute and doing right by others, giving everyone his due. In the same way, it makes the distinction between the pay scale for the work and the actual work done for the actual pay. Such disparities are the norm, we say. They don’t pay you for doing what you are supposed to. Doing the accepted thing isn’t doing the right thing.
Is this the first time you come here? Well … what to do:
*Go to Daily Message Tarot Analysis below. One or more of those sentences has something to say to you. Pick those out. They are about you and the people around you. They are about today and the days around it. (It is a group message like a horoscope, except Tarot isn’t based on someone else’s birth data, so it can be specific, accurate, detailed and direct. Our experiment here is “How much more accurate is it?”)
*Go to Advice to apply what those sentences say (in the best way) for you. (Advice is everyone’s favorite part.) Did you come here for your predictions? – You are done now – See you tomorrow.
The Question for weekdays is: “Tell the visitors here something useful and meaningful to them. The Question for weekends is stated right on top on those days.
Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things especially when the Spread has a card that negates other cards. Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information!
DAILY MESSAGE TAROT ANALYSIS
Tell the visitors here something useful and meaningful to them.

Doing the accepted thing isn’t doing the right thing.
Hypocritical acts involve avoiding doing right by others.

This is the kind of thing you do and they don’t have to pay you for it.
You are still entitled to be paid if you skip doing that.
He wasn’t present when it was done but is entitled to payment.
Miscellaneous
That would be paying a bill that is not legitimate!
Not getting the attention he deserves for what he does.
What he does is avoid paying in full: He feels so entitled.
She was gone before you could give her what she truly deserved so you did not get to.

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: OBSERVATION OF THE SPREAD
Right away, we have a contrast between doing right by people and/or being treated right by them in the Six of Pentacles story, and the appearance of doing right in Hierophant story.
Since Six of Pentacles is getting paid for work done, and Eight of Cups suggests incompletion, we have a financial theme too.
Magician tells us this spread will be about doing, about actions. Eight of Cups tells us the story is about action not being completed, something being avoided or ducked out on or walked away from.
So in the middle we have getting paid. To the left, appropriately and according to the paperwork. To the right, something isn’t finished or doesn’t happen, or doesn’t happen fully. Above, something is done.
MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT CARDS
Hierophant is the show of religion. That is the pope in his regalia and the priests in theirs, so it is about church, but can refer to the show of any religion, or religiosity or hypocrisy. (And you don’t have to be Christian to be a hypocrite!) It means the accepted moral conventional whatever, and also means ordinary, normal and ‘no harm.’ ‘For appearance’s sake’ is a good key phrase for this Rider Waite Tarot card. Hierophant is about respectability, about looking clean (‘having a clean nose’). It is a nice normal decent-looking whatever. It is the accepted whatever, is approved, is official.
Six of Pentacles, on the other hand is doing right by others, giving others their due, paying the appropriate attention to anything. It is getting paid fairly or paying a fair price, illustrated literally by an employer weighing the coins he is paying the workers.
Eight of Cups abruptly is off the designated route – in this case because the road could go no other way. It means incompletion, detour, re-routing, dropping out, not finishing whatever.
Magician is the active principle, the male principle. It is the act of, doing – any tense of the verb ‘do’ and most tenses of ‘make,’ and also means ‘to bring about. No planning or thinking is involved per se in this card’s meaning, just as no action meanings are involved in the female principle, High Priestess.
