….. …….…… …..           Here’s a word picture of our basic choices in life. On the left is having a great time, feeling good all over, and expressing myself freely. On the right is a good private cry in the middle of the night about whatever aggravates me. In the middle is me in the middle of the day having it all under control, enjoying some private leisure.

We have stories. Star is the joy of and Nine of Pentacles is home ownership, or occupying your turf. And Nine of Swords can be the trouble you go through to arrive at either the peace and quiet at home, or the joy of publicly celebrating … or both. ‘Equanimity’ is the word for that composure you see in Nine of Pentacles: No better word for it. And our main message for today is that arriving there (in the middle ground) where Nine of Pentacles is may involve some grief, and may bring some joy along the way.

Nine of Swords and Nine of Pentacles are both private times.

Star and Nine of Pentacles are both feeling very content, very good, being happy with themselves.

Star           You know how good it feels when you are freshly showering? There was a Sixties song ‘It’s Fun to be Clean’ about that. Star is singing in the shower … in public … as part of a performance or ritual. Star is good vibrations, another song from back then. So Star is expressing yourself, feeling good, having a lot to say … and it’s a shapely woman too. It is one of the love cards, translating ‘crazy about,’ usually ‘crazy about her.’ It also says ‘Saying I love you.’

Nine of Pentacles is when you have arrived at where you want to be, wherever that is, and you are in calm and easy control of your day, doing things the way you want to and (see the snail?) when you want to … or something similar to that. Nine of Pentacles is being unruffled, calm, and being ‘beholden to no man,’ as they say: independent. ‘Don’t need nobody.’ It is also being single, living alone (and liking it, usually), being an entrepreneur, and not letting things get to you. The feeling of Nine of Pentacles is similar to the feeling of Star – but Star is celebrating it, and Nine of Pentacles is used to it.

Nine of Swords           You don’t need to be told much about Nine of Swords: What you see is what you get. Not sleeping, up nights worried or in grief or upset, having a good cry in private. You hurt. Nine of Swords is also waking up in physical pain, especially of a headache, since our character in the illustration has hands to head.
