Wheel of Fortune           Wheel of Fortune is coincidence in action, coincidence as a factor in events. Wheel of Fortune is about chance, and is mostly hitting-the-jackpot kinds of chance: grand opportunity, winning, optimum result, ‘it pays off,’ lucky events, happening for the best, turning (wheel) out well. ‘Chance’ and ‘opportunity’ belong to Wheel of Fortune. This brings up gambling – and the illustration of Wheel of Fortune looks sort of like a roulette wheel.

In fact, forms of the word ‘happen’ belong to Wheel of Fortune, along with synonyms like ‘occur’ and ‘event.’

So how does Wheel of Fortune come by these meanings? I mean, this illustration is the pits!

Okay. If you type ‘Wheel of Fortune Tarot Verbatim’ into Google, you will find places in the archives of this site that go into detail about Wheel of Fortune’s history, and you will find meanings which we don’t need here today.

The center of the Wheel of Fortune looks like a roulette wheel, which suggests taking a chance, random distribution. Furthermore, this idea is depicted in Wheel of Fortune: That both divine and infernal influences determine events where we live.

Divine ones are expressed with the four letters that in the Hebrew alphabet say the name of God, which in English is Jehovah or Yahweh. It is never pronounced, out of reverence, in Hebrew – even to the extent that, when Jews are writing in English, ‘God’ is ‘G-d.’

Infernal (evil) influences are all over the place in Wheel of Fortune. The red lizard, and the blue sphinx are bad-guy spirits. (William Rice Burroughs wrote some outlandish stuff about that thar red lizard.) They are both on the rim of the wheel where it turns. That suggests that bad times recur as the wheel turns.

Five of Pentacles           Five of Pentacles’ message is even worse than its illustration suggests. Homeless cripples pass by a church that has a bed and food for people like them … except, the bell on the boy says he is a leper … so no food and bed for them. It’s freezing; they are barefoot and wear rags as they trudge on. This is a picture of desperation; of the worst situation, of down times. This is the card for homeless people, and for losing one’s house or home.

Knight of Cups          Knight of Cups today is about helping out, being a buddy, and, yes, we use its ‘boyfriend’ meaning too. Knight of Cups offers a cup of friendship. Knight of Cups has Mercury’s wings – the messenger Roman god – on his helmet. This card’s illustration is rendered in pastels, in curved lines, so it is about friendly relaxed situations. He is the warm puppy kind of guy, or kind of boyfriend, in Rider Waite.

It’s clear that both deep knowing and action, in tandem, create the miraculous events that move you from the worst place to the best place. Note no one else, no group, is involved.

Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things especially when the Spread has a card that negates other cards. Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. Meanings and Illustrations: Observation of the Spread

There’s a direct contrast to Magician and High Priestess, the male and the female principle from occult perspective: He is action; she is knowledge or thinking; he is active, she is passive.

There’s a direct contrast to Five of Pentacles and Wheel of Fortune, too: Five of Pentacles is losing it all and Wheel of Fortune is the windfall and the grand opportunity. This immediately suggests capitalizing on a loss, or hitting bottom to make it big.

Then, High Priestess with Wheel of Fortune is a miracle or beneficial happening from the spiritual plane.

Magician with High Priestess is making it happen on the spiritual plane.

Magician with Wheel of Fortune is the creation and bringing down or bringing about a beneficial event or miracle.

Magician, High Priestess, Wheel of Fortune is the creation of a miracle by acting on the spiritual plane to bring an event into happening.

Meanings and Illustrations: Individual Rider Waite Tarot Cards

Magician He does it, he pulls it off, he brings it about. He is the one, himself. It turns into ‘yourself,’ especially as a Self card, as in ‘Do it Myself/Yourself.’ This is strongly a male card, is the male principle. It means to initiate, to be the one to make the (first) move.

Illustration shows the magician with the tools of his trade depicted as the four suits of Tarot, wand raised to make his spell happen.

High Priestess is the lady, the female principle, is passive (therefore sitting) as opposed to the Magician who is standing (active) as the male principle. She is the expert, she knows all and is quiet about it … no seminars from High Priestess.

Five of Pentacles is having lost it all, being heartsick, sick, numb, beyond hope and in despair. It is dark night of the soul and hitting bottom. It is losing your home and being on the street, It is street bums. It is the financial bottom, the lowest price your stock went to. The Rider Waite illustration shows bums on the street having past the church with warmth and food in it unnoticed because they are bleary-eyed.

Wheel of Fortune is winning the lottery, hitting the jackpot, the windfall profit, the best that can happen, the optimum result, and karma. All sorts of occult creatures and symbols are on the Rider Waite version of Wheel of Fortune. In its center is what looks a whole lot like a roulette wheel.
