Empress
Empress is one of those cards you see less often as a rule. The beautiful woman category predominates, since Empress is all the goddesses of love and fertility rolled into one. Its other meanings apply awkwardly, and don’t apply across the board, either. She is so womanly that when Empress means, say, ‘comfortable,’ it’s still a woman being comfortable – not a social scene or some other general application. The deck could do without this card, really, because with as few meanings as it has, some of them are contradictory. Famously, she can be the ideal woman or the slut. Fertility goddesses, of course, are both.
Four of Cups
You look at Four of Cups and know what it means. He is unwillingness personified. He wants no part of, he refuses, he denies adamantly. No way! – it’s not coming near me. Get that out of my face. He can be holding out against temptation, he can be refusing to cooperate or participate or do something. He disallows. He refuses to believe, to do, to be. Don’t ask again – how many times do I have to tell you? The fellow averts his head, crosses both arms and legs, as one after another offer is made. In his present company with Hanged Man today, he says ‘I don’t believe’ in various ways.
Hanged Man
Hanged Man takes a back seat today to get along with his table-mates. Today he is turned on by Empress, the sexy woman; and today he is disbelieving something because of Four of Cups.
