Knight of Pentacles

Tough guy, rough guy, macho man: his stereotype. Pictured here, along with his steed, as short and stocky, sturdy. Horse is stock still as man ponders his pentacle. This staring, this concentrating on one thing, is Mr. Knight of Pentacles’ central cluster of meanings. He is a guy-guy – rough, tough, manly, macho, all the way up to punk. He is very physical, even more than Eight of Pentacles and King of Wands.

Knight of Pentacles calls up all sorts of words and phrases about belief, opinion, thinking, concentrating, focus and aim. (So does Queen of Cups).

The ‘one thing on his mind’ is often self-interest, and is often a dame, as it is today.

Queen of Cups

Queen of Cups is a girly-girl, part blond and foo-foo, part figuring it out, and part smart woman. ‘She knows’ is her favorite translate – and all its rephrasings. ‘She understands’ is one of those. She knows, understands, has figured out, and has faith in, her man. This is the true blue loyal wife or girl friend, and the ‘true believer.’ She has faith.

Hermit

Hermit is realistic, objective, analytical, practical and observant. He goes out in the cold with a light looking for people to bring home and feed at the monastery. He represents the facts and the truth, and represents searching for the facts and the truth. So he is an investigator. He is a doctor (his clothing), and he is helping people in distress, so he is a counselor and healer. Naturally he will come up as sincere and sincerity, and as a friend. The illustration tells us he is an old man, so he is ‘the wise old man.’

Now Without The Pictures

All three of our Rider Waite Tarot cards are about thinking. Knight of Pentacles has one thing on his mind (possibly his table-mate Queen of Cups); Queen of Cups is pondering and dreaming, and has faith usually in her man; Hermit is objective and represents the facts, as well as the quest for truth or facts. And here they are putting their heads together in different ways for us.

Knight of Pentacles is a tough, opinionated, macho man in his stereotype. He is short and stocky like his sturdy horse. ‘Obsessed’ belongs to him. Knight of Pentacles is the lead card for that. Queen of Pentacles is the dreamy chic who is a good woman or good girl in her stereotype. She is kind of obsessed, in her way, staring at that gizmo while the flood circles her seat.

Queen of Pentacles is ‘the believer,’ as in Eric Hoffer’s True Believer; and Hermit is the truth, the facts, and is faith in a religion. Queen of Cups has faith in her man: She understands him and still has a high opinion of him. Maybe that’s why he is obsessed with her. Hermit, by the way, means ‘looking for,’ in a very general way. Knight of Pentacles – When Knight of Pentacles is being a person, he’s ever so butch: strong man, muscles, very physical, often short and/or stocky (like the horse he rode in on), ‘one thing on his mind,’ strong opinions, strong focus. Don’t peg him as a thinker, though: His thought controls him! He is driven, ambitious to be Number One. (Note being Number One is his intent and his focus: He isn’t there; he is no VIP. In fact, this is one of the people-cards that tends to be a commoner- type-person, as King of Wands, for instance, is. Even a thug or punk, in Knight of Pentacles’ case.

Commonly, the one thing is his getting ahead, self interest – or a dame. This Knight of Pentacles guy is prone to obsession, to being infested with a thought. He can be a one-woman man. Oh yeah, I almost forgot – energy. Knight of Wands isn’t just physically strong, he is energetic too.

One thing about Mr. Knight of Pentacles: He does not give up on a mission.

Queen of Cups – Queen of Cups too thinks and has a priority, has one thing on her mind – and it’s usually a man. She is the soft, softhearted, dreamy blond good woman that ‘all men dream of,’ the Marilyn Monroe type. The loyal naïve ‘True Believer’ Eric Hoffer wrote about in his book by that name. The stereotypical Blond, as a matter of fact. (I suspect Pamela Coleman Smith, the artist of the Rider Waite deck, who was a Jamaican Negro, had her say about certain types of people in some of these illustrations, this submissive white chic being one of them. To picture The Blond staring at some funky urn while a flood snakes around her chair might be just such a commentary.)

Anyway, Queen of Cups is figuring it out or has it all figured out. She stands in for the way a Lady doesn’t let on when she has caught on.

Lovers – Lovers’ illustration is cluttered with meanings … meanings all over the place. Today, in its present company of a man with one thing on his mind, and a woman with one thing on her mind – the man, Lovers is using only its ‘love’ meanings, its ‘connecting’ meaning, and its ‘love partner’ meaning. These arise from the title, of course, and the naked couple, Adam and Eve.

He knows she knows he isn’t responding because it’s too difficult.
She has made up her mind not to respond to him for as long as it takes to get him interested only in her.
He is as obsessed as a man can get, over a woman who has figured out not to do anything herself.
She can see this tough guy isn’t going to be doing anything for a long time.
He is determined to wait as long as he possibly can; he knows she is loyal and thinks only of him.

Her man hasn’t done a thing in a long time, and this other guy is really interested in her, she can see that.
He knows how tired this sweet gal is of sleeping alone.
He knows she is ‘the kind you marry’ and there isn’t going to be any action for a long time.

At one end is a guy with one thing on his mind, Knight of Pentacles. At the other end is a woman who is also thinking of him, Queen of Cups. In the middle are two cards which say ain’t nothing happening, just waiting. (I guess that’s why the girl is on the town, up there in our first spread.)

Advice seems to suggest the gal – yes – go out if she wants some romance.

Knight of Pentacles: This sturdy dude has one thing on his mind. Today it is the gal. He is very macho and muscled, and so is his horse.

Ten of Wands: A long slow plodding difficult wait, it is. He is loaded down with too much of the same thing. He has taken on the whole load all at once and is not making much progress.

Four of Swords: Just lying there. Not doing anything. Waiting around. Sleeping. A guy isn’t calling you, isn’t coming around, isn’t doing a thing. Lying on a stone coffin, yet.

Queen of Cups: Queen of Cups: She thinks of her man. She has faith in him. She is the naïve type, the naif. She is ‘vanilla.’ She stares dreamily at the funky artifact.
