……………………… Lovers is about contact and connection – unity, even. Knight of Cups is about friendship, affection, making the first move or taking initiative – and is about offer and acceptance. But Nine of Wands is feeling very apprehensive about all this friendly contact, sweating it out. Nine of Wands’ nervousness colors the other cards, put them under a, shall we say, cloud of suspicion.

Pictured is a border guard whose head wound is still unhealed from the last skirmish, who is still on guard duty, anxious about another assault. Nine of Wands is you hanging in there, sweating it out, even though you have been hurt. This is the card for harassment. The under-pressure uneasy dread he feels is the central meaning to apply when Nine of Wands shows up. Nine of Wands is about harassment, being on the defensive, being accused, and putting up with. It can reflect headache or other head problems, physical ones.

Knight of Cups is a natural paired with Lovers: He is Boyfriend, and Lovers is love relationships. He is also about an offer, and Lovers is about partnership, so these two cards can say someone is being offered, or is offering, a partnership. He is also a helper – he offers help. Nine of Wands.………. Nine of Wands reflects being under pressure, apprehension, nervousness, even dread. That fearful but brave feeling is the signature, the core meaning, of Nine of Wands. It is being on the defensive about real or potential confrontation. It is what gives you a tight gut; it is being in a tight spot. It is hanging in there and standing your ground despite harassment or accusations. It is what you wait so anxiously for, and what you have been putting up with. Pictured is a wounded border guard who is still on duty, hanging in there in spite of well-founded fear. They have already done him damage, and he expects them back for another onslaught.
Nine of Wands is also about headache, physical wounds or damage to the head or brain. It also shows up for guards and guard duty, and for the phrase ‘my watch’ once in a while. It can be about soldiers too.

GUIDANCE Contrasting two male personalities who complement one another often and tend to be found working together or orchestrating together symbiotically: The flashy guy with real or imagined influence, and the warmhearted fellow with the diplomatic approach. When Mr. Influential has real political power, Mr. Warmhearted Approach is the liaison, the go-between for deals in the making. This does not have to be in the halls of power; it can be in pool halls too. His diplomatic buddy may introduce Mr. Studmuffin to potential lovers. The main point here is the symbiotic affiliation between a charismatic power-monger type of fellow and a softhearted diplomatic type of fellow who acts as the go-between. ………………….…………………… All three of these cards are about love relationship. Lovers … well, that’s obvious. Knight of Cups is the sweet boyfriend as well as the buddy. King of Pentacles is the Italian Stallion or Studmuffin type: the proud manipulative strategist with some charisma who tends to throw his weight and/or his influence around and be very pleased with himself. He is the player in romance issues. He tends to be the callous sonofabitch in general questions.
…………………………. Lovers is about the connection, the pairing up. The volcano signals the passion connection re the man-woman pairing. Lovers is a lot more general than its title would lead you to believe. It’s a messy card. Just look at the illustration. You have Adam and Eve with their respective magic trees. You have the overarching sun. You have the angelic overlooker with the funky hair who may be protecting or may be about surveillance. Lots of material that makes lots of meanings that are connected only by elements in the illustration. Lovers can even be insurance through the guardian angel looking out for the humans as protection.
…………………………. Knight of Cups is what I call ‘the warm puppy.’ Knight of Cups’ outstretched hand with the cup of friendship he is offering is the key to most of his meanings. The loving lover, the buddy, the offer and the acceptance, the softie, the diplomatic approach: These meanings are signaled by the pastel colors and the curved lines of the illustration. Knight of Cups is the charmer who can sell us anything.

King of Pentacles ………. King of Pentacles is the self-interested charismatic strategist whose ego gets in the way of his ambition. Call him a natural-born politician, even in diapers. He is the dictator, the manipulative lover, the wheeler-dealer selling stolen jewelry at the pool hall, or even the pimp. You find him where charm intersects with intimidation. When he is feeling good one day, he has the nerve to show affection to his partner.
He initiates contact in a lighthearted way about breaking the rules and sneaking out.
He feels warm and fuzzy, he contacts her impulsively, and it’s against the rules.
He makes a risque suggestion that they leave this place together.
It’s fun to have a bad-boy be sweet to you, be your lover.

At his suggestion, they escape some dangerous scene together.
He is a charming nice young man but his partner is a criminal.
A criminal friend joins you for some fun.
This friend is your connection to get out of a double-cross or betrayal.
He suggests they (a couple) move from a house that has some hazard.
A friend helps the two of them move stolen items out of a place.
The first three cards talk of friends and lovers and fun, about lighthearted impulsive flirtation, about helping a friend. Then there’s the fourth card, which is a spoiler, or could be. Next to those warm fuzzy first three cards, the Seven of Swords fangs are pulled: Its least distasteful meanings are invoked, which are daring, taking a chance, nerve, breaking rules, sneaking, bad-boy, and things risque.
We can see escaping from a dangerous situation in this spread – any kind of danger, any degree. That is Sun with Seven of Swords in Rider Waite Tarot. We can see warm fuzzy love things with Knight of Cups and Lovers. Sun with Lovers is leaving a place together. Bet you can link some more of these and come up with new applications.

Knight of Cups: He is the boyfriend, the agreeable person, the one who makes the first move or takes the initiative or suggests, the warm puppy. This is the boyfriend calling you! The illustration shows a young man with a relaxed horse who looks as mellow as the rider. The young man’s arm is extended as if offering friendship.

Sun: Here is a card that in Rider Wait Tarot has a spectrum of meanings: fun, feeling good,lighthearted, impulsively leave this place, be a sweet young man in love, escape, charming, some fun, to get out of, move from a house, move out of a place. The illustration is what holds these disparate meanings together. The little boy gets out of the house, with its restrictions and rules, and recklessly (naked) sits atop a mischievous pony, who is giving him the evil eye. He is having fun, he is breaking rules. He is a charming brat. Know anyone like this???

Lovers: Connection, contact, being together, partner, joins (you, him, her) a couple, the two of them – besides the obvious ‘lover’ theme – are meanings we use today, and are just about all the meanings of this card, except for the spiritual ones about God and an angel, and protection. The illustration shows a man and a woman, naked, with the tree of Eden and a volcano, not to mention a guardian angel watching over them, wings outspread. Obvious, huh?

Seven of Swords: Here is the heavy, the criminal, etc. – except toned down to the most innocent expression of its spectrum because it is surrounded by warm fuzzy cards. So we get daring, nerve, breaking the rules and sneaking out, against the rules, risque, bad-boy, taking chances, dangerous scene, criminal, double-cross or betrayal, hazard, stolen stuff. Yes, this is this heavy card’s lightest interpretations. The illustration shows a spy or reconnaissance agent stealing the weapons from the enemy camp, all by himself. He is making one trip of it, and carrying swords with his bare hands. He is obviously sneaking away in the dead of night.
