Synopsis

Something that feels good can both draw and repel a person when there’s some factor that urges us to quit. To quit feeling good … that’s against nature – at least it’s against our human nature. So we find ourselves feeling silly going round and round, off and on, with some of our pleasures.

Eight of Cups
Eight of Cups is taking leave, derailing, or even abruptly dropping one thing or direction for another. There’s a presumption … not always honored … in Eight of Cups that the pilgrim (Yes, that’s a pilgrim.) will resume course, that his path is in a detour around the mountain and its river. Eight of Cups aborts course, drops out, or decides to go another way. Eight of Cups often says ‘outta here.’
It’s important to note the new and full moons conjoined there. That is a symbol of beginning-and-ending, so you find Eight of Cups referring to ‘it’s over with before it starts,’ and ‘stillborn’ and dropping out of one life path and into another … and the card is neutral, not labeling the change good or bad.
Keep in mind Eight of Cups says ‘not anymore,’ and often there’s another card’s word in the middle, splitting ‘not’ and ‘anymore’ up – like Eight of Cups and Star saying ‘I don’t love you anymore.’
Two of Pentacles
Two of Pentacles’ many applications often include cycles and/or a continuing process. Those plates or balls he juggles go back and forth, up and down, and round and round in a continuing process that is stable. On the other hand, the ships tossing on impossible waves are going up and down in a very unstable, very iffy, process. So the emphasis is on the motion, the continuation, and it applies to either (or both) nice settled routines, or highly unstable ones.
Besides all that, Two of Pentacles’ getup brings in comedy, silliness, being a goofball, and that sort of scene.
Star
Star is performing a bath ceremony and singing. The feeling-good of the bath is part of Star, and the singing brings all those say/tell/speak words that are a theme, one of the tribe-meanings in Tarot Verbatim™. Star also is a shapely woman. Enthusiasm is evident in this illustration. Those factors get together to make Star confess love, say ‘I love you.’

Now Without The Pictures

Eight of Cups abandons course, changes abruptly, or switches onto a new way unexpectedly. He is about diverting but going back to. Next to him is Two of Pentacles who also goes round and round and back and forth, maybe feeling a little silly about that even while doing it. Star tells us this is about love, about feeling good, about something thrilling or an enthusiasm.
Put it all together, and this describes those times we find ourselves quitting but resuming … like going on a diet or swearing to yourself you won’t drink just before you go to bed … and you don’t … for at least four days. ‘Not anymore’ belongs to Eight of Cups.
Star is about being in love and feeling good all over, so in a pinch it can refer to a lover when it really is about the experience you have with that person – the joy. So this spread is also about the back-and-forths we do in our love lives.

Once in a while, you ask Tarot whether what just happened is what it was telling you about in a past reading. That is a yes-or-no question. Eight of Cups spreads a wide net in its fairly narrow concept of dropping one thing for another, and ducking out. Disruptions are its main course, because you see the pilgrim having to detour away from his path because of insurmountable obstacles: a river and a mountain.
So Eight of Cups is about aborting course. Actually Eight of Cups is about aborting anything, dropping out, escaping, quitting without notice, and ‘it’s over before it begins.’
Eight of Cups is one of several cards that in Tarot Verbatim™ mean suddenly, abruptly, the nick of time, before you know it, and other such unforeseen switches and changes.
You find Eight of Cups supporting a recovery theme – ‘and then you’re over it.’ Judgment is the main card for recovery.

You can see how this card belongs to ‘movement.’ You can see how it’s certainly about continuing, and ‘repeatedly,’ ‘over and over,’ and ‘next’ is part of continuing.
All the ‘silly’ meanings he has spring from his getup.
Another application arising from the back-and-forth movements is alternatives and pairs – such as either-or, one way or the other, off and on, and other such paired alternatives.
A main meaning we neglect today is instability. He dances while he juggles, which is stability for sure, but the ships tossing on gargantuan waves behind him – and maybe his could-go-either-way category of meanings – contribute the instability of potential mishaps.
Another meaning we haven’t specifically mentioned is cycles. Two of Pentacles is the lead card for cycles. For instance, if you ask about time (which is a cycle), this card will indicate it’s one after the other. If you asked days, it will mean one day after another, and the same for weeks, months and years. Watch for it to indicate whatever you asked about is cyclic. (Loverboy or lovergirl is gonna be cyclic in some way: mood, stability, disappears and reappears, etc.

The juggler keeps the plates or balls moving back and forth. Something is continuing, someone or something will be coming back. Behind him, ships are tossed up and down, over and over, on waves like a roller coaster. Upheaval.
King of Cups
King of Cups is the emotional man, the loving warm fuzzy dude a gal can be very comfortable with, the gentleman. He is shown with the water that means emotion surrounding his throne, and the ship in the distance is on calm water. His expression leads me to believe he drinks.
Star
Star enthusiastically confesses feelings – usually of love (and for sure of love here!). Star acts out, sings and performs. Star is crazy about you. Illustration is a singing-in-the-shower type thing. Zippity-do-dah.

Knight of Swords rushes and pursues. He is passing through town in a hurry. He is after you. See him run. His horse is in a lather, his sword is brandished forward as he leans forward. Here he comes.

Star
Ceremonial bath rituals abound in religions. This illustration shows a bathing woman singing as she pours two pitchers into the pond. It is a performance, and it is very happy, healthy, upbeat, about enjoying life, encouraging or cheering on, talking – even making a sales pitch, explaining, flattering, or pouring out a confession, maybe of love. Once in a while it is about being the star or the performer. It also means excellent health and enthusiasm, but not today.
Ten of Pentacles
People who are a problem or people who have a problem – people who have trouble or are trouble – those dysfunctional misfits. Not us, of course, ‘present company excepted.’ Our illustration shows an inter-generational family quarrel. Grampa wants another grand-kid to extend his kingdom, papa goes along with it (the will, you know), and mama is protesting as the latest squalling brat pulls her skirt. Papa stares away from her, erasing what she is saying as she says it. Grampa will win, of course. Ten of Pentacles is about the clan, about power structures from the couple to united nations, about cliques and feuds, us and them, and especially those people. Tarot Verbatim(TM) has this meaning strongly; you don’t find it anywhere else, I suspect.
Strength
Here a person has such character and such finesse at handling situations that the lion who came to attack stays under her hand and purrs. She has shut his roaring mouth, you know? Strength is being corrected or correcting someone. A putdown. Disciplining or being disciplined. Overcoming an obstruction from within or without – a trait, a habit, a pesky human … or debt – anything, really. Strength is your inner lion tamer. The mathematical eternity (repeating numbers) symbol is her halo, and she wears the white robe with garlands of someone who is spiritually adept.
Two of Pentacles
A juggler dances while he performs, and is wearing a silly costume – even a dunce cap. Continual motion, one round after another, repetitive motion, continuing or going on and on, one thing after another, and motion itself – especially back and forth, and up and down, and going around (like a round trip). Silly antics and being goofy or doing goofy things also belong to Two of Pentacles. This is the card for the person who gets drunk and puts the lamp shade on his head. Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information!

MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: OBSERVATION OF THE SPREAD Two of our four mean ‘to come back’ (but also mean back and forth) and two mean ‘He loves you.’ What can I say? It’s a very emphatic message. Amazed to make that that many sentences out of it … confess they are similar. Two of Pentacles and Knight of Swords both mean to return. Two of Pentacles means ’round and ’round, over and over. Knight of Swords means to switch back and forth, as well as to pursue. It also connotes ‘passing through town in a hurry’ sometimes. King of Cups is the warm fuzzy affectionate gentleman, the man who feels, who is emotional. Star is to be crazy or enthusiastic about – to confess those feelings of affection. So the Tarot message is very clear. MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT CARDS Two of Pentacles shows the juggler with the balls going ’round and ’round incessantly, shows ships tossed up and down on waves over and over. Repetitive motion and maybe a roller-coaster effect. King of Cups is the emotional man, the loving warm fuzzy dude a gal can be very comfortable with, the gentleman. He is shown with the water that means emotion surrounding his throne, and the ship in the distance is on calm water. His expression leads me to believe he drinks. Star enthusiastically confesses feelings – usually of love (and for sure of love here!). Star acts out, sings and performs. Star is crazy about you. Illustration is a singing-in-the-shower type thing. Zippity-do-dah. Knight of Swords rushes and pursues. He is passing through town in a hurry. He is after you. See him run. His horse is in a lather, his sword is brandished forward as he leans forward. Here he comes. .
