Sometimes we retrace – go back to the self we used to be. Sometimes we make that sharp and sudden turn off course at high speed too. We are evolving … or devolving … all the time, whether it be fast and drastic or whether it be steady and habitual.

Knight of Swords
Off you go to and fro, Knight of Swords. You see him moving on out, speeding. In his picture here, he is in hot pursuit (because of the sword held up that way), but all you can count on to be consistently true with this fellow is the hurry, the energy, and the movement. Three words that pop up for him are: suddenly, emergency, instantly. ‘Strike’ belongs to him too because he is associated with great effort or forceful actions. But where he is going in such a rush is to be determined by other cards or the question: He can be in (hot) pursuit; he can be fleeing. He returns and he leaves. He switches – and not just directions; Knight of Swords is about switching sides, or partners or trousers. He goes back and forth. He makes a U-turn. Let’s call him Skedaddle.
Eight of Pentacles
Eight of Pentacles applies the way a carpenter hammers to everything. First, Eight of Pentacles is anything at all to do with job, work, labor or profession; with workplace or work site; with workers, staff, or employees. Next is repeated items or actions: one thing at a time, one thing after another, keeping at (anything), consistent, constant, persistent, unremitting, steady. Next is actually hands-on doing anything, or being the one (say, the worker, the doer) who is doing or has done whatever it is. (Magician too is associated with this ‘doing,’ and ‘being the one who does’ concept.)
Page of Wands
Page of Wands is a fine young man, Prince Charming, the handsome man every girl is looking for. There’s his picture, proud and attractive. He stands for traits that apply to female entities as well. This is the clean-cut straight-arrow stand-up well-spoken and well-dressed guy everybody likes, much like Knight of Cups is. Page of Wands further means to talk, to say, to be the spokesperson, to say what you mean, to speak your mind or speak from the heart. Page of Wands is standing up for what you believe in, declaring clearly who you are and where you stand. Page of Wands is one of the identity cards, which means it applies as a pronoun sometimes, and means ‘type of person.’ For example, with Sun, ‘I’m a happy person’ and with Knight of Swords ‘changes who you are.’ Page of Wands also means ‘name’ and ‘in the name of’ so that Page of Wands and Knight of Swords can be a change of name, for instance.

Here we have three action cards: Knight of Swords is moving fast; Eight of Pentacles is doing repetitive action; Page of Wands is talking. So we have stories.
Not much in common here. All three Tarot cards are male gender. Knight of Swords could be going back and forth, which is repeated action, and repeated action is what Eight of Pentacles means. That’s it.
Knight of Swords’ story tips you off to not use him as an anchor card most of the time because he does mean contradictory things. The main things to count on with this Knight of Swords guy are the hurry, the energy, and the movement. You look at his neighbors for the rest of his story. He could be coming, going, going back and forth, or changing direction – perhaps a U-turn – leaving, returning, or both. The illustration would indicate hot pursuit because of the way he has his sword at the ready, but in real Tarot life that’s only one of several directions he owns.
Eight of Pentacles is THE card for work, job, workplace, work site, employees, labor, workingman, working class. You’re looking at a workingman working.
Eight of Pentacles is a what-you-see-is-what-you-get Tarot card. If you have ever heard a skilled carpenter hammering, you got Eight of Pentacles down pat. Repeated action, one after another, persistent, a regular routine, a constant effort, keeping it up, all the time, steady and constant. That’s HIM.
Less obvious, but still memorable, is that Eight of Pentacles is about the doing – is hands-on part – is even how things are being done, and is even ‘the person who is doing.’
Page of Wands is Page of Pentacles’ twin, but they aren’t identical twins of course. He, like Knight of Cups, is a guy everyone likes, a guy with a pleasing personality. Page of Wands is good-looking, and is one of those speak/say/tell cards – that theme. Page of Wands is strongly about identity. Not only does he often translate singular male pronouns (he, him, himself) but he also means to project who you are – to say what you think and believe, to stand up for, or stand for, something.
An offshoot of Page of Wands’ identity theme – and related to his good-looking well-spoken theme – is the way Page of Wands means ‘my best self’ in various ways. Today, for instance, we have: better myself; my better self; himself for the better; the good [persons]; my appearance for the better. Here’s where Page of Wands become Prince Charming! Page of Wands is the handsome man who talks! to her.
An example of this ‘good person’ aspect of Page of Wands is: Eight of Pentacles is a worker or workingman; Page of Wands is the good guy or good person, so when they join forces, you have a good worker, or a good man for the job. These two cards also say ‘the type of person to do that job.’
Page of Wands says ‘he is the one who,’ Eight of Pentacles is the job; Knight of Swords is in a rush – so ‘He is the one who does the rush jobs.’
Knight of Swords and Page of Wands are a change of identity, changing oneself for the better, putting a lot of effort into cleaning up your act. These two Tarot cards could translate ‘going back to the person I used to be,’ and also ‘changing my name,’ because Page of Wands means ‘name,’ or ‘in the name of’ as part of its identity theme.
Page of Wands is talking, and Knight of Swords is change. Together, with Eight of Pentacles ‘making,’ they are talking about making changes. Without Eight of Pentacles ‘making,’ they are talking about changes. See? And since Eight of Pentacles is things being done, they are discussing changing how things are done around here. See? And since Page of Wands is about image, these same two cards say ‘the right look for the job.’

I’m getting reminded here that I think of a turning point as one clean irrevocable change of direction. And then given for-instances of how that’s not really so, necessarily. I fall off the wagon of my turning point, and make yet another turning point … or returning point. Could be that chocolate cake I ate, or that time I opened the door to the ex one more time (hopefully the last). So I keep going in a circle and that’s not a bad thing!

Eight of Cups
That’s a pilgrim, and the lay of the land forces him to detour off his course. He is switching directions (and so is Knight of Swords), so the end of one thing is the beginning of another – which is expressed (as elsewhere in the Rider Waite deck) by the sliver moon cuddling up to its full-moon self up there.
This switching and changing direction produces a lot of words and phrases – no end of them. Here are a few we encounter today: fall off the wagon, not the way it used to be, drops out, go out of your way, shortcut, get off course, quit, not anymore, not what (I, it, etc.) used to be, after that little escapade.
Eight of Cups is all about leaving, dropping out, getting out of, vanishing or disappearing, and it becomes a negator in the way it means ‘to avoid’ as in ‘to not go there.’ So watch for it to translate just ‘not’ sometimes. It often says ‘I’m outta here,’ or someone is. It also will call forth phrases like ‘after all that’ and very frequently) ‘not anymore.’
Eight of Cups is very flexible. You will find yourself, as I did here, occasionally having it say ‘when you hang up on them’ because it means ‘abruptly.’ Abruptly anything in this world.
You won’t find it translating ‘return,’ though – especially not today when that’s Knight of Swords’ job.
Knight of Swords
The fully armed knight leans over his hurrying horse’s head with a heavy sword extended and raised. One thing about him is for sure: He is in a hurry. He is more likely to be chasing after or pursuing than he is to be running away from, but he can mean both of these, as well as going back and forth or switching.
Knight of Swords’ vocabulary is limited in his present company, especially since Eight of Cups steal his thunder about the ‘leaving’ and the ‘outta here’ meanings they share. So Knight of Swords is going back or coming back, is returning, and – over and over – is ‘again.’
Some other very common meanings for Knight of Swords are here: speedy, U-turn, faster, interrupted, suddenly, quickly. He gets to say ‘take that back’ today, which is rare, and ‘reenlist’ which is even rarer.
Page of Wands
Here’s the dandy – the well-dressed well-spoken son every mother longs to have – and the Prince Charming to ‘most every gal. His main meanings, besides being the handsome boy or man and the Good Guy, are about talking; about physical appearance; about identity (being the person who; being the type of person) – and his pronoun pack (mostly: he, I, myself, himself). Page of Wands sometimes is about being yourself or being himself.
Naturally Page of Wands is a card-carrying member of the speak/tell/say clan.
Naturally he is also ‘in good shape’ and ‘in good health’ along with looking so good.
Page of Wands has a good reputation; he is clean (including ‘clean up his act’ phrases); he is in good shape; he is polite; he is straight.
Another trait Page of Wands owns is being youthful or young.
Although pages are mostly male people or animals, this card can be the action of a female, and can especially refer to a female when it says ‘I’ or ‘myself.’

Now Without The Pictures
|
You usually have hairs to split when you see Eight of Cups and Knight of Swords together because here’s a transition, as you can see. They both are about a change of direction, an abrupt or sudden (whatever), and they both mean to get out of something in a hurry. But Knight of Swords also means to get into in a hurry (and a few other things, of course).
Because they both mean ‘get out,’ and because Eight of Cups does not mean ‘get into,’ then when they appear together, you find Knight of Swords meaning ‘get out’ or ‘leaving.’ That is the case today.
So let’s look to the remaining card to see what all this transition is happening to. And it’s a person. Page of Wands actually means, strongly and often, some particular type of person. In the absence of a card that designates what type, well, Page of Wands is the clean-cut, straight, well-dressed, well-spoken good-looking fellow.
So now you conclude that a person is transitioning into … or out of … being his (or her) best self. So we have the ‘not a good guy anymore’ with page of Wands and Eight of Cups, and then Knight of Swords is going the other way: ‘I got out of that and am clean again.’
By now (if you’re a regular), you know that in a three-card spread with no questioner and no question, a negative card can often apply to either of the other cards in the spread. So we also read sentiments like ‘I left there in a hurry and cleaned up my act.’
In the real world of Tarot practice, since we have two cards that are about a switch, and one that is about being your best self (or his or her best self), we are about a change toward being a better person, or being in better shape than before. Since Page of Wands means the physical body, this ‘better shape’ can be better health.

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

………………….…………………… All our cards are guys today. Both Knight of Swords and Sun are high-energy, and both are leaving someplace. Knight of Swords overtly involves change (his main meaning, along with ‘speed’) and Sun is a picture of leaving the restrictions of home behind (prematurely, in his case, of course!). So we have a movin’ on out feel to our spread. Page of Wands is identity, and a young man (also in good physical shape, and good looking), so this change can be happening geographically, internally, or both. Those often occur together, as we all know.
………………………….. Knight of Swords is one fast-moving son-of-a-gun. He gets out, he gets in, he is a turnaround, a switch, a sudden change … and anything sudden, really. In the picture here, he is about to use that sword: You would not hold it in that position for long. So he is more likely to be chasing than pursuing, but, hey, in real life, the dude does both. In real life, he make contradictions in your sentences because he … literally … goes either way AND changes back and forth. So he can be that good-looking young man now that he has grown up, or he can be having his second childhood … either way. With Knight of Swords, you look around for what he is saying from his companion cards. Knight of Swords also is ‘sending that man on his way.’
………………………….. Sun is an adventuresome tyke, a reckless liver, a callous bratty rule-breaker. He has snuck out of mama’s house naked to cavort with that wicked pony, that pony who shares his reckless philosophy. But we catch Boy-child in his moment of glory and exhilaration, grandly displaying that banner, hands-free and bareback. He counts as ‘reckless’ in his application, but somehow the consequences, which have not happened at the moment the camera was clicked, are not in his meanings. Instead, we have that freedom, that enjoyment of life, that fun … and applications about child, children, and childhood. This card also comes around to mean leaving the house, as in pulling out of the driveway, even.
………………………….. Page of Wands is a fine young man, Prince Charming, the handsome dude every girl wants and every mother wants to create. There’s his picture, proud and attractive. However, he stands for traits that apply to female entities as well. (I am mindful that ‘person’ cards can refer to animals and other things as well.) This is the clean-cut straight-arrow stand-up well-spoken and well-dressed guy. This is the perfect salesman. Page of Wands further means to talk, to say, to be the spokesperson, to say what you mean, to speak your mind or speak from the heart. Page of Wands is standing up for what you believe in, declaring clearly who you are and where you stand. (What’s a nice guy like him doing with these other two, anyway?) Page of Wands is one of the identity cards, which means it applies as a pronoun sometimes, and means ‘type of person.’ For example, with Sun, ‘I’m a happy person’ and with Knight of Swords ‘changes who you are.’ Page of Wands also means ‘name’ and ‘in the name of’ so that Page of Wands and Knight of Swords can be a change of name, for instance.
……….………… Knight of Swords and Sun Knight of Swords and Sun combine a change and suddenly with a kid, with getting out or leaving, with fun, with freedom, and with enjoying life. These two cards in Tarot Verbatim™ represent things like a change that makes you feel good, getting over childhood, getting over something (I called it ‘a hump’) and feeling good about that. They say life is fun again (because Knight of Swords means ‘again’ as part of its ‘return’ or ‘coming back’ category of meanings). Sun means vacation or time off (via his leaving the restrictions of the house, getting out of it) and Knight of Swords is a change, so you come back from vacation a different person. Sun is a fling too, so a fling changes you. (Add Page of Wands, and it changes who you are). Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things especially when the Spread has a card that negates other cards. Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information!

Knight of Swords and Sun are both leaving. Knight of Swords is getting out in a hurry and Sun has sneaked out to play.
Page of Wands, Magician and Sun are identified with males.
Knight of Swords also means a change, which makes a change of identity – between being an acceptable and respectable well-dressed person and being a (naked) brat – a strong theme here. Especially when you add in that Knight of Swords and Magician refer to making a change or ‘changing himself.’
