Strength
Strength is famous for preventing a confrontation or trouble. Quashing the opposition diplomatically. Fixing what ain’t broke yet. Strength is an assertive (or even pushy) woman, is the dominant party, and the strong character. Today she chairs the meeting and gets everyone to agree and be happy with a win-win deal.
Strength is not a bully: She stands by the side of the lion and gently hushes his mouth and makes him purr at her touch: the Lion Tamer. Three of Pentacles
Three of Pentacles’ meanings all come together when you know that the architect or general contractor is demonstrating to his clients, as they hold the blueprints, that he has performed his job as agreed and is entitled to his payoff: the final draw which is his profit.
The main word for Three of Pentacles is relationship. Business, social, or love relationship. The lead concept for Three of Pentacle is: Each party does his part as agreed. ‘Mutual’ is one of Three of Pentacles’ words.
Three of Pentacles is a meeting – very frequently of three people. It is often a business meeting or budget meeting, or a negotiation to settle. But it also is lovers getting together, running into someone on the street, getting together after work with friends, etc.
They are settling up financially in the illustration. Three of pentacles is about a payoff, or ‘it pays,’ and is about profit – especially mutual profit, or the profitability of a business.
Three of Pentacles is often about business. It can translate just that one word at times, and also ‘our business’ or ‘our job’ because three people or more are often involved in the story.
Meeting to agree on a price, to negotiate, leads Three of Pentacles into being a major card for litigation, arbitration meetings, court hearings, and settlements.
Three of Cups
Gee, I never noticed until right now how parallel the meanings are for Three of Cups and Three of Pentacles; they have a lot in common. Three of Cups’ emphasis is on camaraderie – on happiness and sharing, and it specifically means girls and partying. Three of Cups is the main card for dating in Tarot Verbatim.™. That’s the parts that don’t overlap, of course.
The story in Three of Cups is: Women who are friends pool money and labor to grow pumpkins on a farm. They have made a profit and are celebrating, having drinks and toasting their achievement together, still friends after splitting the profit.
So Three of Cups is: happy relationship, enjoying company, funloving girls, enjoy, happy, fun, socializing, celebrating, getting together for drinks, being together at a party.
Three of Cups is also sharing the profit or reward, a team of equals, the three of us, going along with others, being on the same page.

All three of our Rider Waite Tarot cards today are about achieving. Strength is getting something done; Three of Pentacles is getting together to get something done. Three of Pentacles is a meeting of people who have a mutual purpose in common; Three of Cups is a get-together of people who have achieved their mutual purpose and are celebrating – and these people are likely to be women.
Note that it’s uncanny how often the meeting – in both Three of Pentacles and Three of Cups – is of three people. That has come in handy in some of my criminal investigation readings.
Strength and Three of Pentacles tell of a woman who gets people together to get something done, often in business but not necessarily. She could organize fundraisers or get people to support her cause, for instance. Strength makes you, or influences you, to do your part: Strength uses her influence to make something happen (or not happen); Three of Pentacles is people who do their part fair and square. Strength also coerces or pressures people to meet, or to agree, because Three of Pentacles is all about meeting and agreeing. Since Strength solves problems, ‘That’s us doing our part (Three of Pentacles) to solve our problem.’
Strength is the dominant party in the relationship. Strength fixes, or solves the problem, in the relationship. Strength and Three of Pentacles is a relationship with an assertive woman (or a pushy broad).
Since Three of Pentacle is settling up, Strength is making a settlement happen, which could be a lawsuit.
Three of Pentacles means ‘pays off,’ and Strength makes it pay off. Since Strength is overcoming a vice (a bad habit, for instance), that pays off too.
In Strength and Three of Cups, a woman influences other women to agree and be a team. She can be a supervisor or a cheerleader. Three of Cups and Strength is girls banding together to mutual benefit, and also strong women teaming up. It’s a ‘We shall overcome’ thing. Both these cards show women, and both involve a good outcome – Three of Cups is celebrating a profit, and Strength is easily coming out on top of some interference. Strength
Strength makes the lion purr in agreement before he even remembers he came to cause trouble. Strength today is about preventing opposition to or interference with – which is Strength’s usual application: shutting up the interference and shutting down the resistance. Today it’s a mutual endeavor, a relationship, a business association, and people who are together on something mutually rewarding that Strength is protecting from harassment. Strength is also self-discipline: Strength is about making yourself act in concert with members of a circle or group you are part of: so, stifling yourself rather than stifling external opposition.
Strength is using influence to make the situation the way it should be. It is a girl card. This is a picture of a woman firmly and diplomatically taking charge.
Three of Pentacles
Three of Pentacles is people who are together, is being in a relationship (of any sort), is an endeavor with others, is doing business, is agreement or meeting of the minds, is unity in a group and is a fair exchange, whether commercial or not: each one doing his part, and each one receiving his part. You see an architect demonstrating to his clients that the church was built according to the specs on the blueprint. This is a commercial exchange. He will collect his profit when clients agree he has finished the project of supervising the building.
Three of Pentacles often talks about a deal, or dealing with other people. It is about making a profit, trading, an exchange, buying, selling. Today we say ‘making a buy’ for this Tarot card.
Four of Swords
Four of Swords refrains from, and is similar to Four of Pentacles when it is meaning that. Four of Swords mainly means to not participate – is unmotivated, unresponsive, not interested, indifferent, not participating, not doing anything and not going to do anything. Four of Swords is ‘Don’t call me; I’ll call you.’ You could say Four of Swords means ‘don’t give a damn.’
Four of Swords is asleep, sleeping alone, retired, sidelined, taking time out. It can translate ‘sleeping’ in a sexual sense once in a while. Four of Swords does not care. This card can represent a coma or death if that is the question, or if other cards create the theme. It can serve as sort of a negative modifier, as in ‘no one’ and all the ‘not doing’ meanings.
Not today, but Four of Swords can also be meditating, since its story is about the night knight candidates spent meditating to report their life purpose, as a knight, to the bishop in charge of the ceremony.

Our stories are about either participating in relationship, deal or negotiation … or not. Our stories contrast being assertive or proactive,
In the middle is coming to agreement as a team of some sort, or a relationship of any kind. That is Three of Pentacles of course.
To the left is Strength: Being the one to apply the solution, handle whatever risk or opposition there is.
To the right is not being the one … to not participate, to have no pony in the race.
Strength and Three of Pentacles have a lot to say. We shall go there first. Three of Pentacles is getting together, is teamwork, is people getting along. Add Strength, which is about solving situations, handling problems, and preventing interference, and you have things like people who are getting something done together and not letting anyone interfere with what they are doing; someone keeping the others on track, getting them to get along together, or someone who gets them together in the first place. You have people joining in to do their part. You have ‘us’ handling and solving a problem. You also have being an influence on the relationship you are in.
Strength is self-control; add Three of Pentacles, and you are making yourself get along with other people, or forcing yourself to join in and be part of what they are doing.
Strength is a dominant force, and Three of Pentacles is people getting along, getting things done, working together, etc. Put the two of them together, and you have someone who has the knack or the skill to get people to cooperate, whether they are of that mind or not.
Strength means to keep (a person, animal or influence) from; Four of Swords refrains from. Strength is doing; Four of Swords is not doing. Strength is hands-on, and Four of Swords is hands-off.
Three of Pentacles are participants; Four of Swords means to not participate. They can describe ‘That’s not my job,’ when you are with others who are doing it. The emphasis here could be ‘That’s your part’ and it could be someone not doing his or her part. ‘I’m not interfering in what you guys are accomplishing.’
So our stories contrast the assertive or leadership part with the passive or team-member part – are about participating or not participating, about being proactive or indifferent.

Nine of Wands – Today is a study in Nine of Wands’ spectrum. Its basic meaning of waiting for the other shoe to drop’ applies no matter whether it’s just a (even small) feeling, or whether it’s a life-threatening situation – any kind of life-threatening situation, not just combat or confrontation. Watch for Nine of Wands when someone has been diagnosed with a scary (to him/her) ailment, or been warned of a possible hazard.

Nine of Wands applies both as to the apprehension of the wounded soldier who isn’t ready for another battle but also to the bravery of standing up to the attackers. so in the case of the diagnosis, Nine of Wands would represent both the dread of the disease and the determination to fight it.

So Nine of Wands is both the ordeal and the expectation of the worst happening.
Strength – A lady dressed for choir practice bends over a lion. Her hands cover his snout. Lion is just standing there. This illustration is Taming the Beast – whether the beast within (traits or habits) or the beast without (a person or situation that is a threat). Strength is about preventing – one of its favorite words. And about overcoming – another favorite word.

Here are six other focal points of the Strength movement:

*Strength exerts influence, usually diplomatically (she is the lion whisperer, after all). Words for that today are: making me or making us or making you; getting us (or them or you) to.

*Strength can handle it – sees it coming before it lands, and cuts off its path, whatever it is. Strength is that look of a person who is comfortable in a fight who repels muggers. Strength can do – got a grip on it, ironing it out.

*In a little different context, usually, Strength is that soothing touch (she touches him, she soothes).

*And yeah, the Strength lady can be pushy, dominant or assertive.

*Strength – and here the card may not refer to a person per se – is the solution, is fixing the situation, preventing the worst from happening.

*And lastly – not that often – Strength is toning it down, putting a damper on it, being quieter or more subtle.

There’s a spiritual and/or esoteric set of meanings to Strength that we are not using today because its neighbor cards are framing a different story than that.
Three of Pentacles – Three of Pentacles is an old friend of yours if you are doing Tarot Email Training. It has these standard meanings, and sticks to them. First of all, Three of Pentacles’ standby word is ‘relationship.’ Next is ‘meeting.’ Then comes ‘deal’ or ‘dealing with.’ Today that includes people pitching in, and a support group.

When you combine the meeting with dealing with, you get negotiating and putting heads together, and those are also fallback meanings for Three of Pentacles.

And today, strangely enough, the way the sentences are constructed, Three of Pentacles four times just gets to be: people, peers, them, we. This card is about what people are doing together, and if other cards also mean that, it just leaves the ‘people’ part to Three of Pentacles.

The way these meanings belong to Three of Pentacles is the story in the picture: The fellow standing on the bench is the builder and/or architect who used that blueprint the monk and nun hold to build the part of the building you are looking at. This meeting is the inspection: When the clients there agree he has done his part, he gets paid because they have a deal, a contract.

Nine of Wands is uneasy about what may happen next; Page of Cups is uncertain and feels awkward. Both Nine of Wands and Page of Cups are feeling inadequate to their situations.
Nine of Wands is under pressure, apprehensive of another attack. Strength is preventing an attack by a would-be aggressor.
Strength is the solution to a problem or obstacle; Three of Pentacles is settling up an issue by coming to agreement. Both are about fixing a difficulty. Three of Pentacles is about coming to agreement, and Strength is someone who exerts influence toward resolution of a difficulty. So we see a picture of a woman taking assertive charge at a meeting.
Nine of Wands is apprehensive (nervous, uneasy, feeling pressured, things are scary around here); Page of Cups is uncertain and feeling out of his element and awkward. These two are guy cards. Strength is using influence to make the situation the way it should be. It is a girl card. This is a picture of a woman firmly and diplomatically taking charge where the others are anxious and uncertain. Three of Pentacles makes that a business meeting. And since Three of Pentacles is also relationship, we have the woman in a romance taking the lead where the fellow is nervous or insecure.
It seems to be up to a woman to finesse an agreement acceptable to the parties. That is our main message for today.

Nine of Wands You have a feeling “it’s out there and it’s coming to get me” – acold dread something may happen like that again. Here’s a soldier, wounded from a previous assault, still standing his ground, defending his position, expecting the onslaught. He is afraid next time he won’t fend them off. He is under pressure to do something that makes him very uneasy.
Strength can handle this. She knows just how to finesse the situation, to make it purr when it has potential to roar. She stands for a similar concept that we explained for World just past. Being spiritually adept helps a person in dicey situations. She is holding the mouth that wants to roar, petting the lion who came to attack her. He has fallen under her charm, her strength of character.
Three of Pentacles shows a real estate closing of sorts: The architect who built the place is finally about to collect his last big draw, and this is the final inspection by the owners. Three people are often involved in this meeting, especially if it is business. This is one of the reliable cards, anchor cards, because it so frequently says ‘relationship’ or ‘deal.’ Three of Pentacles is working out an agreement that is fair to all concerned in a face-to-face meeting. It is each party actually performing that fair share too. It also talks about a contract, negotiation, and legal settlement or legal proceeding.
Page of Cups Feeling like a misfit, are you? – out of place, awkward, dressed inappropriately for this occasion? Page of Cups is feeling uncomfortable in a strange place or uncertain situation. “I don’t get it – huh?” Duh. Somebody is a weirdo. Horoscopes are group readings too.
Astrology has to be based on someone else’s birth data, though, so it does not solidly apply to you just because of where the sun was when you were born. (Astrologers know this.)
Emily wants to know whether these sentences are more accurate for regular visitors than for people who have come only a few times. Would you help with a comment, if that is who you are? Please?
Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things, especially when the Spread has a card that means ‘no, never or not.’ That negative modifier can apply to any one of the cards.
Without a question also the pronouns (you, him, her, me, us, them, they, etc.) in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. Notice how, as much as possible, we drop pronouns, which makes for some awkward phrasing.
The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information! In a ‘real’ reading, the parties are identified (including the gender of the questioner!), and so is the time frame if there is one. In this group reading, we cannot do that, so we have variety.
