Synopsis |
We don’t really expect a reward commensurate with what we do – not in every way and not every time. You win some, you lose some – we all get that. But we gotta win the ones that are important to us, even the petty ones that are important to us. For some people, splitting a restaurant bill has to be to the small coin, or they are short. That same person is working for ten dollars less an hour than she or he is worth, and shrugs that off. Attitudes about getting, or not getting – and giving or not giving – what is fair: This is our rumination for today.

Six of Pentacles
You see an employer weighing the gold in the money he pays the help, which is being very fair. This fair exchange is Six of Pentacles’ core meaning. In application, the exchange commonly applies not just to money and paying or receiving pay, but to giving or receiving attention, respect, and whatever is deserved. That can include payback or getting even.
Not today, but Six of Pentacles also applies to spreading germs, and to receiving medical (or other) treatment.
Four of Cups
You see a fellow who is not going to give in about refusing. Four of Cups is an emphatic negator (negative modifier), one that applies broadly. It can be not giving in to temptation. It mainly, as you can see from the posture – head down, arms and even legs crossed – as yet another offer presents itself. Today Four of Cups is part of ‘pay no’ and ‘get no’ because of Six of Pentacles.
Four of Cups translates contractions – a lot. Can’t, won’t, don’t. It says things like: no way; not having any of that; not going to, as well as plain old ‘no.’
Chariot
Chariot’s illustration doesn’t tell you much beyond the concept of being the driver. There’s a lot to Chariot, and seldom do you use much of its full spectrum in a spread. It can apply to anything about any vehicle. It broadly applies to taking charge, to responsibility, to being in charge, to getting a project done, and to being, of course, the one who is responsible to get the project done.
Chariot is winning and achievement. Here’s how: Chariots were the tanks, the ultimate weapon, of their day. Charioteers were war heroes, commanding officers. Chariot means ‘plan’ and ‘the man with the plan’ because the formations these charioteers made, the strategies they employed, largely determined which side won the conflict. Yes, Chariot means strategy too.
A meaning unique to this one card is using factors that are against success to succeed, which involves analysis of a situation and nerve and daring to wade in and get ‘er done. Yes, Chariot can be ruthless and cunning. Here’s how Chariot means using factors that would defeat you to succeed against the odds instead: Sphinxes pull this chariot. They are magic creatures with a mind of their own: They travel only in one direction, a turn to the right or a turn to the left. Our hero hitches them so they bump against one another and go forward. (He directs the path of these unwilling creatures with his magic wand. Chariot is one of the paranormal cards.)

Six of Pentacles means to give, or to receive, the attention or respect; Four of Cups means to refuse, or to be refused, the attention.
